Summary Four macerated lower jaws of elk, from disorganised populations, were examined. Measurement of the alveolar bone ressorption, as well as radiological findings revealed that in three of the animals there was a parodontal inflamation which increased in severity with age. Possible causes of the illness, which in the end led to loss of teth and death of the animals, are discussed and compared with similar dental illnesses in chamois and sheep. Damage as a result of feeding and social disorder also seem to promote the emergence of parodontopathies in the animal.
