    Description / Table of Contents: Every year a landslide disaster occurs somewhere in Europe. Destructive events are fortunately infrequent but when they do occur they are often tragic in their effects. Europe is heavily populated and development is expanding into areas where natural events are more likely to happen. Landslide Recognition is written by specialists from several European institutions and is designed to portray the diagnostic features of landslides as they would appear in the field, on maps or in photographs. Brief descriptions are provided and some guidance is given in the area in which different landslide types might be expected. This book will assist planners, developers, engineers and earth scientists to recognise where a problem may exist and to diagnose what type of failure may occur. The correct investigations and remedial measures may then be applied.

    Description: About 10% of Europe's surface area is prone to rapid flooding of rivers confined in valleys. The devastating potential of such floods is exacerbated by the deficits of existing gauging networks, including low station densities and recording frequencies, and lack of information beyond stage height. Here, we use seismic data of the July 2021 Ahrtal flood, Germany, to extract information to complement sparse hydrometric data, and to reconstruct the rapid evolution of this fatal event. We show that a seismic station can deliver essential flood metrics such as magnitude, propagation velocity and debris transport rate. These seismic products provide high resolution insight to the non‐linear flood behavior. We argue that an approach combining distributed low‐cost seismometers with existing seismic stations, can provide important real time data on future catastrophic floods and associated hazards in upland catchments, offering precious response time also in currently ungauged landscapes.

They are hard to adequately detect and describe by the classic gauge station scheme, but seismic sensors provide a valuable alternative to this difficulty. A seismometer can sense a flood like the devastating one that hit the Ahr valley, Germany, in July 2021 up to 1.5 km away. The seismic footprint of the flood allows to provide information on flood magnitude, velocity and trajectory at sub‐minute resolution and at near real time. We show how this new approach can be utilized for future flood protection.

    Description: This dataset contains a simulation of regional permafrost distribution for Austria based on the Permakart 3.0 modell developped by Schrott et al. (2012). The original model was created and calibrated using validation data from the Hohe Tauern range only. Here we used the same modelling parameter and extended the simulation to the entire Austrian Alps. Please note: The simulation was not validated for other parts of the country and may be erronous. Furthermore, the field evidence was collected between 2009 and 2011 and may not be valid anymore. The raster dataset contains values from 0-100 representing a pseudo-probability of permafrost occurence. For more information on the modell and field data please refer to the original publication (see "Related to" Reference).

    Notes: Ground water occurrence, movement, and its contribution to streamflow were investigated in Loch Vale, an alpine catchment in the Front Range of the Colorado Rocky Mountains. Hydrogeomorphologic mapping, seismic refraction measurements, and porosity and permeability estimates indicate that talus slopes are the primary ground water reservoir, with a maximum storage capacity that is equal to, or greater than, total annual discharge from the basin (5.4 ± 0.8 × 106 m3). Although snowmelt and glacial melt provide the majority of annual water flux to the basin, tracer tests and gauging along a stream transect indicate that ground water flowing from talus can account for ≥75% of streamflow during storms and the winter base flow period. The discharge response of talus springs to storms and snowmelt reflects rapid transmittal of water through coarse debris at the talus surface and slower release of water from finer-grained sediments at depth.Ice stored in permafrost (including rock glaciers) is the second largest ground water reservoir in Loch Vale; it represents a significant, but seldom recognized, ground water reservoir in alpine terrain. Mean annual air temperatures are sufficiently cold to support permafrost above 3460 m; however, air temperatures have increased 1.1° to 1.4°C since the early 1990s, consistent with long-term (1976–2000) increases in air temperature measured at other high-elevation sites in the Front Range, European Alps, and Peruvian Andes. If other climatic factors remain constant, the increase in air temperatures at Loch Vale is sufficient to increase the lower elevational limit of permafrost by 150 to 190 m. Although this could cause a short-term increase in streamflow, it may ultimately result in decreased flow in the future.

    Notes: We have investigated the effect of annealing polycrystalline YBa2Cu3O7−δ samples in a He ambient and in vacuum, on the composition of their internal surfaces. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) data indicate a decrease in the amount of BaCO3 but a higher proportion of Ba at the near-surface region upon low-temperature annealing in He or vacuum. The latter effect seems to derive from the presence of a surface barrier for oxygen outdiffusion, and can be prevented by diffusing Ag into the polycrystalline sample. Changes in the cutoff energies of the ultraviolet photoelectron spectra indicate that a submonolayer coverage of Ag is sufficient to produce a change in the work function of 0.3 eV, corresponding to the lowering of the surface barrier.
