    Notes: Employing various measures for the quality of subjective probabilities of technical success in R & D a detailed analysis of 4 data sets taken from different R & D organizations shows that the probability assessments roughly specify the populations to which R & D projects belong, but are extremely unreliable indicators of the eventual outcome of individual activities. Unintentional errors and conscious biases are identified as accounting for the unsatisfactory quality of subjective probabilities in R & D. Finally, some measures are suggested which might improve the quality of the probability assessments.

    Notes: Zusammenfassung Die Strukturempfindlichkeit der Ultraviolettfärbung und Erregung von Steinsalzkristallen verschiedener Herkunft wird durch lichtelektrisch-photometrische Untersuchung des Einflusses von Temperung und plastischer Verformung auf ihre optischen Eigenschaften quantitativ festgelegt. Die spezifischen Höchsterregungen im Maximum der Absorptionsbande (465 mμ) sind in weitem Umfang von der unerregten Färbungsintensität unabhängig, dagegen mit den individuellen Eigenschaften des Kristallmaterials und seiner thermischen oder mechanischen Vorbehandlung veränderlich. Die Verminderung der Kristallfärbungen durch plastische Deformation erlaubt die Bestimmung scharf definierter „photochemischer“ Elastizitätsgrenzen.

    Notes: Abstract Mössbauer spectra were taken from thermally quenched solutions of 2 mole % FeCl2/H2O in small temperature steps from 10°K to 255°K. The Mössbauer data, especially the quadrupole splitting, show again the existence of three different phases, connected by irreversible transitions. The temperature dependence of the quadrupole splitting delivers the field parameters of the crystalline field at the iron atom in the three different states. For state I and II the field parameters are consistent with the description of the microstructure of the surroundings of the Fe++-ion as that of a Fe(H2O) 6 ++ -complex in a disordered (state I) and in an ordered environment (state II). The microstructure of the surroundings of the Fe++-ion in state III is proposed to be that of an Fe{(H2O)4 · Cl2} · 2H2O-complex. As a specialty, the reduction of the quadrupole splitting in state III and in crystalline FeCl2 · 6H2O below 60°K reveals the influence of the spinorbit interaction on the electric field gradient.

    Notes: Abstract Microspheres containing methylene blue and prednisolone acetate were prepared by one of three methods: freeze-drying, evaporation, and solvent-extraction-precipitation. An extremely porous structure was obtained by the freeze-dry and solvent-extraction-precipitation procedures. The specific surface area of 6.33-µm particles was 20.6 m2/g, or 35 times that of a particle devoid of pores, and the void space was 59–61%. The sphericity, size, and yields of the microspheres were influenced by the preparation procedure, surfactant type and concentration, temperature of the continuous phase, polymer concentration in the dispersed phase, and ratio of marker to polymer. The most suitable processing conditions were a polymer concentration of 5–10%, a marker loading of 10%, 0.1% sorbitan sesquioleate as the surfactant, and temperature adjustment of the continuous phase from 15 to 50°C following the addition of the dispersed phase. Complete release of the highly water soluble methylene blue occurred within 72 hr, while the less soluble prednisolone acetate released much more slowly, i.e., 90% after 7 days. The microspheres remained relatively intact during the in vitro release of methylene blue, confirming that the incorporated agent was confined to the walls of the porous network. Collapse of the polymer structure was evident after 7 days. The release therefore was believed to be governed principally by the solubility of the drug and the porosity of the matrix.

Dielektrizitätskonstante ε20° = 3,28.Bei der langsamen Zersetzung von Mn2O7 bildet sich γ-MnO2, beim explosionsartigen Zerfall entsteht α-Mn2O3 (und geringe Mengen von Mn3O4). Zerfallsenthalpie nach Mn2O7 = α-Mn2O3 + 2O2, ΔH = -55,3 ± 0,5 kcal. Bildungsenthalpie nach 2 Mn + 5/2 O2 = Mn2O7, ΔH = -177,4 ± 1,6 kcal.Mn2O7 ist eine außerordentlich gefährliche Substanz. Die Schlagempfindlichkeit entspricht der des Knallquecksilbers; seine Detonationsgeschwindigkeit beträgt 400 m/Sek.
