    Notes: A periodically stratified elastic medium can be replaced by an equivalent homogeneous transverse isotropic medium in the long wavelength limit. The case of a homogeneous medium with equally spaced parallel interfaces along which there is imperfect bonding is a special instance of such a medium. Slowness surfaces are derived for all plane wave modes through the equivalent medium and reflection coefficients for a half-space of such a medium are found. The slowness surface for the SH mode is an ellipsoid. The exact solution for the reflection of SH-waves from a half-space with parallel slip interfaces is found following the matrix method of K. Gilbert applied to elastic waves. Explicit results are derived and in the long wavelength limit, shown to approach the results for waves in the equivalent homogeneous medium. Under certain conditions, a half-space of a medium with parallel slip interfaces has a reflection coefficient independent of the angle of incidence and thus acts like an acoustic reducing mirror. The method for the reflection of P- and SV-waves is fully outlined, and reflection coefficients are shown for a particular example. The solution requires finding the eigenvalues of a 4 × 4 transfer matrix, each eigenvalue being associated with a particular wave. At higher frequencies, unexpected eigenvalues are found corresponding to refracted waves for which shear and compressional parameters are completely coupled. The two eigenvalues corresponding to the transmitted wavefield give amplitude decay perpendicular to the stratification along with up- and downgoing phase propagation in some other direction.Much of this work was performed while the author was at the Department of Geophysics and Planetary Sciences, Tel-Aviv University, Ramat-Aviv, Israel.     Notes: A model of parallel slip interfaces simulates the behaviour of a fracture system composed of large, closely spaced, aligned joints. The model admits any fracture system anisotropy: triclinic (the most general), monoclinic, orthorhombic or transversely isotropic, and this is specified by the form of the 3 × 3 fracture system compliance matrix. The fracture system may be embedded in an anisotropic elastic background with no restrictions on the type of anisotropy. To compute the long wavelength equivalent moduli of the fractured medium requires at most the inversion of two 3 × 3 matrices. When the fractures are assumed on average to have rotational symmetry (transversely isotropic fracture system behaviour) and the background is assumed isotropic, the resulting equivalent medium is transversely isotropic and the effect of the additional compliance of the fracture system may be specified by two parameters (in addition to the two isotropic parameters of the isotropic background). Dilute systems of flat aligned microcracks in an isotropic background yield an equivalent medium of the same form as that of the isotropic medium with large joints, i.e. there are two additional parameters due to the presence of the microcracks which play roles in the stress-strain relations of the equivalent medium identical to those played by the parameters due to the presence of large joints. Thus, knowledge of the total of four parameters describing the anisotropy of such a fractured medium tells nothing of the size or concentration of the aligned fractures but does contain information as to the overall excess compliance due to the fracture system and its orientation. As the aligned microcracks, which were assumed to be ellipsoidal, with very small aspect ratio are allowed to become non-fiat, i.e. have a growing aspect ratio, the moduli of the equivalent medium begin to diverge from the standard form of the moduli for flat cracks. The divergence is faster for higher crack densities but only becomes significant for microcracks of aspect ratios approaching 0.3.

    Notes: Basic requirements for a seismic reflection system using a moderate-power controlled source are discussed. General considerations and computer modelling show promise for geophysical prospecting, especially at low penetration and very high noise level. For many applications, ranging from mineral and water prospecting, to civil and military engineering, and even archeology, a relatively cheap, small and portable device of this kind might be more convenient than conventional explosive sources or sophisticated controlled sources of the vibroseis type. The use of a simple, low frequency periodic signal facilitates rapid data processing procedures and suggests that the mechanical generator will be very simple and cheap.

    Notes: Abstract The rotation of an elastic medium makes it act anisotropically and dispersively. The eigenvectors for plane wave propagation are in general complex and thus the waves are elliptically polarized. In general the waves are neither pure shear nor pure compressional waves, and their speeds depend on the ratio of rotational frequency of the medium and the angular frequency of the wave. The class of problems discussed here involves waves propagating perpendicularly to the axis of rotation and in particular we discuss plane strain modes. The reflection and refraction of plane waves is considered. The plane waves are used to construct a general solution in cylindrical coordinates. The solution is given in terms of Bessel functions. The cylindrical solution is applied to scattering by circular cylinders. The problem of free oscillations is mentioned briefly.

    Notes: The cellular and subcellular events in the anamnestic response were considered. Rabbits previously immunized with key hole limpet hemocyanin (KLH) were given an anamnestic challenge in the hind footpads. The popliteal lymph nodes were removed at intervals after immunization and the following correlated on a temporal basis: the changes in the number and types of cells in the lymph nodes; the formation and regression of ribosomes, polyribosomes, endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus in plasma cells; the changes in intracellular immunofluorescence for anti-hemocyanin; and, the incorporation of 14C labeled amino acids by lymph node cells into anti-KLH during a brief in vitro culture period.Maximum intracellular fluorescence for anti-KLH and the largest incorporation of 14C labeled amino acids into antibody occurred between the third and fourth day after immunization. During this interval highly differentiated plasma cells were most numerous with respect to the total cellular population. These events took place in a 12 to 24 hour period.This was followed by an abrupt decline in the synthesis of antibody. Coincident with this was a reduction in the number of recognizable plasma cells in the nodes, diminished intracellular fluorescence for anti-KLH and a simplification of the cytoplasm of the plasma cells toward a lymphocytic form.
