Notes: Summary The earthquake activity in Europe is investigated in the paper using return periods of earthquakes in fifteen European seismic regions. The variations of return periods are compared with the fundamental structure of Europe and with the observed migrations of epicentres. The probabilities of occurrence of earthquakes and their return periods are obtained by applying the theory of largest values to the data in Kárník'sCatalogue of European Earthquakes 1901–1967.

Notes: Abstract The contribution reviews basic concepts of earthquake hazard assessment for sites of nuclear power plants. Taking into account the delineation of earthquake source regions, intensity-frequency relations, upper intensity thresholdsI max and intensity attenuation curves, we determine the seismic hazard for a site in south Bohemia and calculated the quantities defining the seismic hazard, i.e. return period in years, probability of exceedance for different intensities and different periods of interest. The adopted procedure has some limitations due to the poor definition of seismogenic zones (boundaries,N(I),I max) and lack of strong motion observations in Central Europe.

Notes: Summary The time distribution of earthquake occurrence in the European area is investigated by statistical laws. The original data of shallow-focus earthquakes are taken from the European catalogue 1901–1967. Evidence is given that the process with the negative binomial entries as a model describing the occurrence of shallow-focus earthquakes is better than the Poisson process. Further, the influence of magnitude classes and magnitude threshold value on the time distribution of earthquake occurrence is examined.

Notes: Summary The previous investigation of the probability of occurrence of largest earthquakes in the European area continued by applying the Gumbel theory of largest values to three periods 1901–1930, 1901–1955 and 1901–1967, respectively. The values of magnitudes which will be exceeded with the probabilityP=1%, 2% and 10% were determined from the lines fitting the distributions of magnitudes and corresponding probabilities for all three periods. It was assumed that the relationship between the differences δM P% [k](67)=M k,P%−M 67,P% (k=30, 55, 67) and the observation period follow the hyperbolic law. This tendency was used for the estimation of the probability line corresponding to an infinite observation period.

Notes: Summary The third asymptotic distribution of the theory of largest values is applied to sixteen earthquake provinces in the Balkan area. The model which assumes an upper magnitude limit fits the observations better than the first distribution. Graphs and tables provide estimates of return periods of largest magnitudes.

Notes: Abstract The recent artificial intelligence techniques are commonly applied to solving problems in which multidimensional statistical analyses of various quantities and their modelling prognostic functions can be used. This paper attempts to summarize the characteristics of the prognostic functions applied in the determination of the maximum possible earthquake. Geonomic quantities are reviewed and categorized with respect to their influence upon the estimation of the maximum possible earthquake.

Notes: Abstract Qualitative geological acceptance criteria and quantitative seismological acceptance criteria for radioactive waste disposals are developed. The background material for the initiation of site selection and for its earthquake hazard assessment is discussed. The recent movements of the Earth's surface as well as the other mechanical properties of geological media, hydrological conditions of geological blocks, their groundwater chemistry, geochemical rheology, petrological analyses of rocks, etc., have to be taken into account. A new comprehensive integrated safety analysis of the final underground disposal of spent nuclear fuel has been underway in the Czech Republic since 1991. In accordance with these seismogeological acceptance criteria regions for building underground final radioactive waste disposals are singled out in the Czech Republic.

Notes: Abstract Within the activity of the ESC Subcommission 8 ‘Engineering Seismology’, Project TERESA, seismic hazard calculations have been performed for two areas of a different earthquake activity. Fundamental seismological data (earthquake catalogues, macroseismic observations and maps) and some additional geological information were analyzed and processed to prepare inputs for hazard computations. Great attention has been paid to verifying the reliability of the input data. Seismic hazards obtained for five sites of the region of high seismic activity (Sannio-Matese, southern Italy) and six sites of the region of low seismic activity (Brabant Massif and northern Rhine, Belgium—The Netherlands—Germany) are presented and discussed.
