    Description / Table of Contents: The compatibility of the alcali salts of statistical copolymers consisting of styrene and acrylic acid or n-butyl acrylate and acrylic acid can be improved by increasing the ratio of acrylic acid in the copolymers at a constant degree of neutralization as well as by increasing the degree of neutralization. The degree of compatibility depends strongly on the kind of cations involved.Transparent films are possible to obtain from some of these mixtures.The change of the compatibility was controlled by comparing the degree of transmission of light (measured on thin films) and by means of phase contrast microscopy.With the help of the differential thermal analysis two transition temperatures are observed for all the examined ionomer blends.For some selected mixtures the results of the DTA measurements and those of dynamic mechanic investigations are compared.From a certain degree of neutralization onwards only a single transition temperature can be observed with the torsional pendulum.The behaviour of the ionomer blends is shown to be quite different at slow and at fast mechanical load charges. With materials behaving tenacious at low strain rates only a poor impact resistance is observed.A characteristic property of all these ionomer blends is their high tendency to absorb water, which depends on the number and the kind of ionic groups as well as on the ratio of the components in the mixture and on the degree of their compatibility.
    Notes: Die Verträglichkeit von Polymeren mit unterschiedlichem chemischem Aufbauläßt sich durch statistischen Einbau relativ geringer Mengen ionischer Gruppen wesentlich erhöhen.In Abhängigkeit von der Art des verwendeten Kations zeigen die Alkalisalze von Styrol/Acrylsäure- und n-Butylacrylat/Acrylsäure-Copolymeren mit der Erhöhung des Acrylsäureanteils in den Polymeren und mit steigendem Neutralisationsgrad eine zunehmende, teilweise bis zu transparenten Mischungen führende Verträglichkeit.Die Veränderung der Verträglichkeit wird durch vergleichende Lichtdurchlässigkeitsmessungen an Folien und mit Hilfe der Phasenkontrast-Mikroskopie verfolgt.Bei Anwendung der Differential-Thermo-Analyse sind bei sämtlichen untersuchten Ionomer-Mischungen (auch bei solchen, die vollkommen transparente Formteile ergeben) zwei Umwandlungstemperaturen zu beobachten.Für einige ausgewählte Systeme werden die Ergebnisse der DTA mit denen ausdynamisch-mechanischen Messungen verglichen. Mit der Methode der Torsions-Schwingungs-Analyse ist oberhalb eines bestimmten Neutralisationsgrades der Mischungskomponenten nur ein einziges Dämpfungsmaximum feststellbar.Das Verhalten der Ionomer-Mischungen unter langsamer und schneller mechanischer Beanspruchung zeigt starke Unterschiede. Produkte, die sich bei langsamer Beanspruchung als zäh und flexibel erweisen, besitzen nur geringe Schlagzähigkeiten.Allen Mischungen gemeinsam ist eine starke Tendenz zur Wasseraufnahme, die durch Zahl und Art der ionischen Gruppen, das Komponentenverhältnis und den Verträglichkeitsgrad der Komponenten bestimmt wird.

    Notes: Abstract. Experience has shown that theoretically determined lifetimes of bulk states of hot electrons in real metals agree quantitatively with the experimental ones, if theory fully takes into account the crystal structure and many-body effects of the investigated metal, i.e., if the Dyson equation is solved at the ab initio level and the effective electron–electron interaction is determined beyond the plasmon-pole approximation. Therefore the hitherto invoked transport effect [Knoesel et al.: Phys. Rev. B 57, 12812 (1998)] does not seem to exist. In this paper we show that likewise neither virtual states [Hertel: et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 76, 535 (1996)] nor damped band-gap states [Ogawa: et al.: Phys. Rev. B 55, 10869 (1997)] exist, but that the hitherto unexplained d-band catastrophe in Cu [Cu(111), Cu(110)] can be naturally resolved by the concept of the transient exciton. This is a new quasiparticle in metals, which owes its existence to the dynamical character of dielectric screening at the microscopic level. This means that excitons, though they do not exist under stationary conditions, can be observed under ultrafast experimental conditions.

    Notes: Abstract We report on a diode-laser-pumped cw Nd: YAG laser operating at a power level of 150 W. By using a transverse pump geometry, the radiation of 54 diode lasers with an output power of 10 W each is coupled into a Nd:YAG rod. In multimode operation, an optical slope efficiency of 32% and an optical to optical efficiency of 29% are obtained. In TEM00 operation, an output power of more than 30 W is realized with an optical to optical efficiency of 10%.
