Notes: The effect of lattice damage caused by room temperature irradiations with products of 10B(n, α)7 Li reactions and 235U fissions and with fast neutrons on transition curves, quenching curves, and lattice constants of Nb3Sn, Nb3Al, Nb3(Al, Ge), and V3Si have been investigated. The critical currents in transverse magnetic fields could be increased up to more than one order of magnitude. For heavily irradiated samples drastically reduced values for the critical currents, the upper critical fields, and the transition temperatures were observed. The lattice constants were increased up to 0.5%; by irradiation.

Notes: Abstract Thin Nb3Sn films on bendable quartz substrates have been prepared by different methods. These films exhibit an initial tensile stress. Bending the samples by two methods under known conditions results in quantitative changes of tensile stress and in relative changes of the superconducting transition temperature. On the average a “tension coefficient” of about $$\Delta T_c /\Delta \sigma \approx - 5 \times 10^{ - 3} K/kp mm^{ - 2} $$ has been found for all samples. A certain influence of the preparation conditions has been observed. The results are in fairly good agreement with similar types of earlier measurements.

Notes: The effect of lattice damage caused by products of 10B(n, α)7 Li reactions and 235U fissions at room temperature on the properties of bulk NbN and Nb(C, N) wires has been investigated. For both types of compounds the critical currents in transverse magnetic fields at 4.2 K show a sharp peak near H c2 which is increased by irradiation, whereas at low fields the critical currents are enhanced for Nb(C, N) but reduced for NbN. The upper critical field and the lattice parameter are slightly increased but no change in the transition temperature by irradiation was observed. The critical current behavior of Nb(C, N) samples was found to agree qualitatively with a flux pinning model developed by Kramer.1

Notes: Nb3Ge films with thicknesses between 0.5 and 1.5 Μm have been deposited on heated sapphire substrates by dc sputtering in a pure argon atmosphere. With a maximum superconducting onset temperature T c= 22.7 K, these high-T csamples crystallize in a single-phase A15 structure with lattice parameters down to 5.14 ». Critical current densities and upper critical magnetic inductions have been measured as a function of magnetic field orientation, temperature, and film thickness. The anisotropies of the critical currents and fields depend on the microstructure of the samples and show maxima for the field orientation normal to the sample surface in those films that exhibit columnar growth of the crystallites normal to the substrate. The temperature, field, and angular dependences of the pinning forces in these films are compared to existing pinning theories.

Notes: Abstract Proximity effect sandwiches with NbN as type II superconductor and copper, silver, or gold as normal conductors were prepared. The transition temperature of the double layers investigated by resistivity measurements decreases with increasing thickness of the normal conductor. A maximal decline of 0.5 K was observed. The results are in qualitative agreement with theoretical expectations.

Notes: Nb3Ge films with thicknesses between 60 and 800 nm were deposited onto heated sapphire substrates by thermal coevaporation. Stoichiometric Nb3Ge samples crystallize in a single-phase A15 structure with a lattice parameter of 5.14 ». Critical current densities and upper critical magnetic inductions were measured as a function of temperature, film thickness, and magnetic field orientation. The critical currents and fields show maxima for parallel field orientation. This is due to the random orientation of the crystallites. With decreasing thickness an increasing second maximum for normal field orientation is observed. This behavior can be explained by additional precipitates caused by internal stress.

Notes: Thin films of Nb3Sn, Nb3Ga, and NbN deposited on sapphire substrates by different preparation techniques and diffusion wires were measured under hydrostatic pressures up to 15 kbar. The results on critical current and upper critical induction under pressure can be described by scaling laws similar to those already known for temperature as parameter. The anisotropies of the critical currents and fields depend on the microstructure of the samples. The pinning mechanisms are not changed under hydrostatic pressure, so that the pinning forces in these superconductors can be compared to existing pinning theories.
