In:  Supplement to: Sato, Masahiko; Makio, Masato; Hayashi, T; Ohno, Masao (2015): Abrupt intensification of North Atlantic Deep Water formation at the Nordic Seas during the late Pliocene climate transition. Geophysical Research Letters, 42(12), 4949-4955, https://doi.org/10.1002/2015GL063307

Description: Knowledge of the evolution of North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) is key to understanding the past evolution of the climatic system. We developed a new rock-magnetic method to determine the constituent magnetic minerals of sediments and report on the evolution of NADW during 2.2-2.9 Ma. We measured isothermal remanence acquisition curves of North Atlantic deep-sea sediments drilled at the Gardar Drift and decomposed the first derivatives of these curves into high-coercivity and low-coercivity components. Residuals of the decomposition were sufficiently small throughout the study interval, confirming that the Gardar Drift sediments represent a mixing of the two end-members. Fractional changes of the high-coercivity component represent variation of the Iceland-Scotland Overflow Water, a branch of NADW formed at the Nordic Seas. The high-coercivity component increased significantly during an interglacial period just after ~2.68 Ma, which suggests that NADW formation in the Nordic Seas abruptly intensified at this time.

Description: The global climate has been dominated by glacial-interglacial variations since the intensification of Northern Hemisphere glaciation 2.7 million years ago. Although the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation has exerted strong influence on recent climatic changes, there is controversy over its influence on Northern Hemisphere glaciation because its deep limb, North Atlantic Deep Water, was thought to have weakened. Here we show that Northern Hemisphere glaciation was amplified by the intensified Atlantic meridional overturning circulation, based on multi-proxy records from the subpolar North Atlantic. We found that the Iceland-Scotland Overflow Water, contributing North Atlantic Deep Water, significantly increased after 2.7 million years ago and was actively maintained even in early stages of individual glacials, in contrast with late stages when it drastically decreased because of iceberg melting. Probably, the active Nordic Seas overturning during the early stages of glacials facilitated the efficient growth of ice sheets and amplified glacial oscillations.

Notes: Abstract A three-dimensional hand-eye system has been specially developed for handling, forming, and inserting flexible wires in electronic assemblies. The system consists of a vision system capable of measuring three-dimensional positions and a gripper capable of microforce control. The hand-eye system performs its tasks based on visual and force sensor data. The vision system uses a camera, a multiplanar laser light projector, and a video-rate image processor to measure the three-dimensional position of a flexible wire on a complex background. The projector consists of multiplanar light beams and a single-planar light beam and is robot-mountable. The single-planar light is used to simplify the matching of the multiplanar light beams and projection images. This is one of the most important features of our method. The measurement time is within 1.2 s for 20 positions on the wire, which is less than one robot cycle. The measurement accuracy is better than 0.2 mm in the plane for a 100×100 mm scene and is better than 1 mm perpendicular to the plane for a depth of 500 mm. The microgripper has 3-axis sensors capable of detecting three types of forces: grasping, pulling, and pushing. The dynamic range of the grasping force is 0.005 to 0.6 N, enabling high-resolution control. Two piezoelectric actuators are used in the microgripper fingers and a 3-mm stroke is achieved by amplifying the actuator's displacement using a two-stage lever. This system has been used for wire handling in magnetic disk slider manufacture, which is a difficult and delicate task. Measurement, grasping, and upper-stage insertion had a 100 percent success rate using autorecovery, making the hand-eye system feasible. This paper discusses design concepts, the range measurement principle, the system itself, and wire-handling applications.

Notes: Abstract Female parents ofElasmucha dorsalis attend their offspring and show specific sequential defensive behavior when disturbed. Intense responses of brooding females such as wing fanning were usually triggered by exposure to crushed nymphs. Maternal care continued for a long time, sometimes into the fourth or last nymphal instar. Female removal experiments showed that maternal defense is highly effective under field conditions. High egg mortality observed in the field was probably due to the predation by an ant,Myrmica ruginodis, which occurred at high densities on the host plant,Aruncus dioicus. Most of the egg masses were found on the leaves subtending axillary inflorescence of the female plants, and nymphs usually aggregated and fed on fruits in the inflorescence. Because the food of nymphs is temporally limited, the female can produce only a single brood. Thus, temporality of food resources as well as a heavy predation pressure may have led to prolonged maternal care.
