    Notes: Abstract We report the first experimental measurement of fringe-angle applied electric field scaling of space charge growth and of crystallographic orientation effects in the initial development of the diffraction efficiency of thick holograms produced by the photorefractive effect in a bismuth silicon oxide (BSO) crystal. Diffraction efficiencies of holograms made by interfering two plane waves on the [¯110] face are measured as a function of the angle between the fringe pattern and the applied electric field. As the crystal is rotated relative to the interference fringes, the applied field may be scaled to yield identical space charge growth. Polarization-dependent diffraction measurements agree with the theory of a birefringent grating when optical activity is included as a separate, serial effect. Both the rotation-scaled applied electric fields and the crystallographic variations in the birefringent diffraction grating are consistent with charge transport processes in which the initial space charge fields are perpendicular to the interference fringes over growth times extending nearly into the steady state regime.

    Notes: Abstract A sync-pumped cw dye laser system has been used to produce subpicosecond pulses. Pulses as short as 0.7 ps, assuming a single-sided exponential pulse shape, were observed. A set of experiments was performed to investigate the origin and effects of noise in the sync-pumped system. A digital and an analog feedback loop have been designed to optimize the pulse width. The noise has been lowered by 10 dB for frequencies up to 10 kHz; long-term drift is also controlled by this method. A four-stage dye laser amplifier, pumped by a Nd:YAG laser which operates at a 10-Hz repetition rate, is synchronized electronically to the dye-laser picosecond pulses. A gain of 3×106 has been achieved.

    Notes: Abstract Using two coherent time delayed short pulses, we have demonstrated that one can obtain, in the profile of Doppler-free two-photon resonances, interference fringes with a splitting 1/2T (T: delay time between the two pulses) much smaller than the spectral width 1/τ of each pulse (τ: duration of each pulse). Furthermore, by inducing a 90° phase shift between pairs of coherent time-delayed laser pulses, and subtracting the resulting fluorescence from pairs of coherent pulses with and without the phase shift, we have eliminated the diffraction background and isolated the Ramsey's interference fringes in the profile of Doppler-free two-photon resonances. This technique should lead to a number of important improvements in the presently available methods of ultra-high resolution laser spectroscopy of atoms, molecules, and crystals.

    Notes: A microminiature refrigeration system allowing precise temperature control above 77 K has been tested successfully as a compact Dewar to achieve the necessary cryogenic temperatures to operate optically pumped semiconductor lasers in an external cavity. Using this system in a mode-locked CdSe laser resulted in a stable average output power of up to 10 mW. Tunability from 7015 to 7160 A(ring) was achieved by changing the temperature from 77 to 111 K.
