    Notes: Abstract High latitude ion outflows mostly consist of upward streaming O+ and He+ emanating from the ionosphere. At heights above 1000 km, these flows consist of cold and hot components which resonantly scatter solar extreme ultraviolet (EUV) light, however, the ion populations respond differently to Doppler shifting resulting from the large relative velocities between the ions and the Sun. The possibility of optical detection of the Doppler effect on the scattering rate will be discussed for the O+ (83.4 nm) ions. We have contrasted the EUV solar resonance images of these outflows by simulations of the 30.4 nm He+ and 83.4 nm O+ emissions for both quiet and disturbed geomagnetic conditions. Input data for the 1000 km level has been obtained from the EICS instrument aboard the Dynamics Explorer satellite. Our results show emission rates of 50 and 56 milli-Rayleighs at 30.4 nm for quiet and disturbed conditions and 65 and 75 milli-Rayleighs at 83.4 nm for quiet and disturbed conditions, respectively, obtained for a polar orbiting satellite and viewing radially outward. We also find that an imager at an equatorial distance of 9 RE or more is in a favorable position for detecting ion outflows, particularly when the plasmapause is depressed in latitude. However, an occultation disk is necessary to obscure the bright plasmaspheric emissions.

    Notes: Phenol (C6H5OH) at non-lethal concentrations in hard water had no effect on the urine flow rate or haematocrit of rainbow trout for exposure times of 24 h. Phenol was detected in the urine in a non-conjugated form and unchanged phenol was also extracted from muscle, blood and brain. Uptake of phenol into tissue was found to be rapid with an equilibrium concentration being reached in 3 h. Loss of phenol after exposure was as rapid. The equilibrium concentration for muscle was similar to the phenol concentration to which the fish were exposed. Blood and brain contained smaller amounts. Close to or above the lethal threshold concentration (48-h lc509 mg 1-l; 15°C) the fish had higher than ambient concentrations in their tissues most notably in the brain. Above the lethal threshold there is evidence of a large uptake of phenol by erythrocytes.

    Notes: Rainbow trout were exposed to sublethal phenol or non-ionized ammonia concentrations or to hypoxia. Blood samples were taken after various exposure periods and the packed cell volume (PCV) value, the whole blood glucose concentration and the plasma cortisol and chloride ion concentrations measured. At low pollutant concentrations there were no significant changes in the blood components compared to control fish values. At higher concentrations the general response to the stressors was significant increases in the PCV value and the glucose and cortisol concentrations during the first few hours of exposure, followed by a gradual return to normal values in the subsequent exposure time. The increases in glucose and cortisol concentrations were approximately proportional to the pollutant concentrations no such correlation was found for the PCV values. No clear pattern of plasma chloride ion changes was found in any experiment. Levels of no acute effect, in terms of toxic units (TU) based on the pollutants’ 48 h LC50 values, were estimated for phenol as 0.3 TU and for un-ionized ammonia as 0.1 TU, using the plasma cortisol concentration measurements. The use of fish blood component measurements as general indicators of a stress response is discussed.

    Notes: Both spring-summer and fall-winter sand transport have been observed on the Long Island, New York, inner shelf at water depths of 20-22 m using a radio-isotope sand tracer system. The extent of dispersal of the tagged, fine sand was measured at 3 week intervals in two 70 day experiments. In the late spring and early summer, movement was primarily diffusive in nature, extending 100 m around the line of tracer injection, while late fall-winter patterns had strong advective features, including an ellipsoidal outline extending approximately 1500 m westward of the injection points after the passage of several storms with strong northeasterly winds. Near-bottom current observations made with Savonius rotor sensors identify the event responsible for the bulk of the transport over the 135 day observation period as a storm flow of 2 days duration. Tracer and current observations together suggest that westward winter storm flow along the Long Island shelf is the major mechanism of sand transport at these depths on a yearly time scale. A least-squares fit of several of the observed winter patterns with a plume model yields average sediment mass flux lower bounds of 3.2 × 10−3 gm/cm/sec and 1.7 × 10−1 gm/cm/sec for ‘typical’ and extreme winter storm activity.
