    Notes: Abstract Many authors have considered the common mussels in temperate waters of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres to be a single cosmopolitan species,Mytilus edulis Linnaeus, 1758. Others have divided these mussels into several subspecies or species. Samples of mussels were collected from 36 locations in the Northern Hemisphere and nine locations in the Southern Hemisphere. Electrophoretic evidence from eight loci indicates that the Northern Hemisphere samples consist of three electrophoretically distinguishable species:M. edulis from eastern North America and western Europe;M. galloprovincialis Lamarck, 1819 from the Mediterranean Sea, western Europe, California, and eastern Asia; andM. trossulus Gould, 1850 from the Baltic Sea, eastern Canada, western North America and the Pacific coast of Siberia. Mussels from Chile, Argentina, the Falkland Islands and the Kerguelen Islands contain alleles characteristic of all three Northern Hemisphere species, but because they are most similar toM. edulis from the Northern Hemisphere, we suggest that they tentatively be included inM. edulis. These South American samples are morphologically intermediate between Northern HemisphereM. edulis andM. trossulus. Mussels from Australia and New Zealand are similar in allele frequency and morphometric characters toM. galloprovincialis from the Northern Hemisphere. FossilMytilus sp. are present in Australia, New Zealand and South America, which suggests that the Southern Hemisphere populations may be native, rather than introduced by humans. Morphometric characters were measured on samples which the allozyme data indicated contained a single species. Canonical variates analysis of the morphometric characters yields functions which distinguish among our samples of the species in the Northern Hemisphere.

    Notes: The purpose of this work was to utilize the nonlinear current-voltage properties of induced grain boundaries in high temperature superconducting YBa2Cu3O7−x thin films to fabricate a planar microwave mixer. The experiment involved constructing a coplanar waveguide microwave circuit, the center conductor of which had a constriction patterned in it containing a single high angle grain boundary, thus forming a weak link junction. Analysis was provided by use of the resistively shunted junction model with excess current.

    Notes: Epitaxial Y3Fe5O12 (YIG) films have been grown by the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique on (111) gadolinium gallium garnet substrates. The effect of substrate temperature and oxygen partial pressure on the structure, composition, and magnetic properties of the films was investigated and compared to liquid phase epitaxy YIG films. The results demonstrated that epitaxial YIG films could be prepared under a wide range of deposition conditions, but narrow linewidth (ΔH(approximately-equal-to)1 Oe) films were producible only at low oxygen partial pressures (O2〈250 mTorr) and relatively high substrate temperatures (Ts(approximately-greater-than)800 °C). Since the linewidth of single-crystal YIG is dominated by surface and volume defects and/or impurities, the narrow linewidth indicated that PLD is a viable technique for producing high-quality ferrite films for microwave device applications. In addition, under all deposition conditions (50–1000 mTorr and 700–850 °C) there is a uniaxial axis perpendicular to the film plane. However, at low oxygen pressure the uniaxial anisotropy energy constant Ku is negative while at high oxygen pressure Ku is positive.

    Notes: We report on electron-spin resonance on single crystals of YBa2Cu3O7−x and Bi4/3Pb2/3Sr2CaCu2O8+x at 9 GHz. While in the YBCO there was no observable ESR signal in the normal state (above Tc) or in the superconducting state (below Tc), we did observe a large microwave nonresonant absorption below Tc at low field values (H〈200 Oe). We attribute this form of absorption to fluxoid formation below Tc. In the BiPbSrCaCuO single crystals, a significantly different result was found in that an electron-spin-resonance signal was measured both above and below Tc, besides the low-field absorption occurring only below Tc. The g value was found to be 2.055 and reasonably constant with temperature from 300 to 4 K with H parallel to the c axis. We attributed the ESR line to Cu++ ion excitation. The ESR signal increased as T decreased from 300 K to Tc and the variation with temperature fits a Boltzmann statistics law. Below Tc the ESR signal remained constant as T was decreased below Tc. We explained this result in terms of two competing statistical effects. One effect is due to the fact that the ESR signal in the fluxoid region increases as the Boltzmann factor, but the fluxoid density decreases by the same factor. The net effect is that the ESR signal is constant with temperature below Tc. Hence, this is a clear demonstration of statistics involved in the formation of fluxoids.

    Notes: Low-field microwave absorption in polycrystalline YBa2Cu3O7−x was measured as a function of dc current applied through the sample at various temperatures below Tc. The peak-to-peak value of the magnetically modulated microwave absorption (MMMA) signal increases with dc current at a fixed temperature. Above a threshold value of the current, the absorption signal level rapidly drops to zero, indicating quenching of superconductivity. If this critical current is plotted as a function of temperature, the results can be explained on the basis of the flux creep model. The MMMA signal obeys a scaling rule as predicted by the flux creep model. We conclude that flux creep limits the critical current density in these materials; also, this presents a new way of measuring critical current densities while using only a two-contact method. It gives some insight into the relationship between microwave properties and dc transport phenomena in these superconductors.

    Notes: The effects of dc transport current on low-field microwave absorption have been investigated systematically on bulk ceramic YBa2Cu3O7−δ samples. At a fixed temperature T, the critical current Ic(T) at which the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) signal vanishes varies linearly with T. The EPR absorption characteristics obey a scaling rule in accordance with the flux creep model. A revised version of the flux creep model is also presented.

    Notes: Epitaxial thin films of barium hexaferrite (BaFe12O19) have been fabricated by the pulsed laser deposition technique on basal plane sapphire. Structural studies reveal the films to be predominantly single phase and crystalline, with the c axis oriented perpendicular to the film plane. The magnetic parameters deduced from vibrating sample magnetometer and ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) measurements are close to the parameters associated with bulk materials. Post annealing of the films reduced the FMR linewidth by more than a factor of 3 so that it compares reasonably well with single-crystal films. The derivative FMR linewidth was measured to be 66 Oe at 58 GHz and 54 Oe at 86 GHz. Spin-wave-like modes have been observed for the first time in barium ferrite films. The deduced exchange stiffness constant of 0.5×10−6 ergs/cm is in reasonable agreement with recent calculations.
