    Description: One-dimensional (1D) nanotubes of Nd 0.1 Bi 0.9 FeO 3 (NBFO) with an inner diameter of ∼50 nm were synthesized via sol-gel based electrospinning without template assistant. The phases, morphologies, crystalline structures, and magnetic properties of these 1D nanostructures were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and SQUID, respectively. It was found that the calcination condition plays a crucial role in determining the morphologies and the magnetic properties. Interestingly, these 1D NBFO nanotubes exhibit wasp-waisted magnetic hysteresis with a lower coercivity and larger saturation magnetization, which were prevalent in natural rocks and artificial composite materials. The origin of these wasp-waisted hysteresis loops was discussed.

    Description: Abstract We measured shear wave velocities in the shallow subsurface by applying seismic interferometry to earthquake records from eight vertical borehole arrays in eastern Hokkaido, Japan. We detected an increase of several percent in the seismic velocity during January to March due to seasonal frost dynamics. The velocity changes associated with seasonal frozen soil are affected by the frost depth and the extent of freezing, while the frost depth and the extent of freezing are mainly controlled by the cumulative temperature and the current temperature, respectively. Thus, a weighted cumulative freezing degree day is proposed to consider these two factors and used for stage division of the annual freeze‐thaw cycle. Based on the results of observation, we present an empirical model to relate the velocity changes with the weighted cumulative freezing degree days, which allows us to estimate the influence of seasonal frozen soil on near‐surface seismic velocity.

    Description: The travel-time averaged near-surface shear-wave velocity to 30 m ( V S (30)) is a key parameter for classifying sites in many building codes. Using the travel-time averaged shear-wave velocities at two different depths ( V S ( z 1 ) and V S ( z 2 ), and z 1 〈 z 2 〈30 m), a new method for estimating V S (30) from a shallow shear-wave velocity profile measured in a borehole is proposed. Using the data from 594 boreholes from the KiK-net in Japan and 135 boreholes from California where the shear-wave velocity profile reaches at least 30 m, the reliability of the new method is validated by both the correlations between the measured and the estimated V S (30) and the accuracy of site classification using the estimated V S (30). The results show that the new method can estimate V S (30) with high accuracy, and the Pearson correlation coefficients between the measured and the estimated V S (30) equal 0.999, and the site classification successful ratio using the estimated V S (30) is greater than 96%, whereas z 1 ≥10 m and z 2 =25 m. Using the data from Japan, the correlations between the measured and the estimated V S ( z ) at six depths (50, 100, 150, 200, 400, 600 m) were studied. The results show that the accuracy for the estimating V S ( z ) ( z ≥50 m) using the proposed method increases when the selected two depths ( z 1 , z 2 ) are approaching to the depth z as it should be. Compared with methods of Boore (2004) and Boore et al. (2011) , the new method does not need any regression analysis to derive empirical relations from a large number of sites, is not regionally dependent, has a remarkable improvement in the accuracy, and is potentially useful for many parts of the world.
