Abstract: Plant bioactive compounds are plant-based natural products that display a variety of pharmacological applications. These bioactive compounds are important as medicines, pigments and flavorings since most of the pharmaceutical industries are highly dependent on medicinal plants and their extraction. The types and concentrations of bioactive compounds produced by plants are determined by the species, genotype, physiology, developmental stage and environmental factors during growth, determining the physiological adaptive responses employed by various plant taxonomic groups in coping with the stress and defensive stimuli. In the past two decades there has been a renewed interest in the study of conventional aspects such as elicitors and biotic and abiotic stress factors that influence secondary metabolism during in vitro and in vivo growth of plants. the application of molecular biology tools and techniques are facilitating increased understanding of the signaling processes and pathways involved in the bioactive compounds production in subcellular, cellular, organ and whole plant systems during in vivo and in vitro growth, with application in the metabolic engineering of biosynthetic pathways intermediates. Biosynthesis and Manipulation of Bioactive compounds in Medicinal and Aromatic Plants provides a comprehensive introduction and review of the state-of-the-art biotechnological tools used in enhancement of bioactive compounds in medicinal and aromatic plants. Readers will find a systematic overview of techniques such as Omics, Crisper /Cas9 and RNAi to enhance plant bioactive contents including various in vitro techniques, hairy root culture and transgenic technology to enhance plant bioactive contents using plant tissue culture approaches. The chapters provide an overview of the role of induced mutation, biotic and abiotic stress to increase the bioactive contents in plants, plus the role of endophytes to enhance the contents of plant bioactive compounds and standard operating procedures using hydroponics system of cultivation for significant enhancement of bioactive compounds. This book serves as a single source for researchers working in plant secondary metabolites and the pharmaceutical industry.

Abstract: This book brings together comprehensive multi-disciplinary knowledge on diverse aspects of the Himalayan treeline ecotone which is considered one of the most sensitive ecosystems to climate change. The contents of this book are based on the results of extensive research and provide a holistic understanding of the treeline ecotone in Himalaya. The book will serve as an important reference manual and a textbook on treeline ecology. The book is unique in the sense that it provides an engaging account of almost all the aspects of the treeline ecotone, such as taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic species diversity, temperature lapse rates, tree phenology, water relations, and stress physiology, tree ring width chronology, and climate relationships and the role of treeline ecotone in human sustenance in the Indian Himalayan region The treelines in the Himalaya, being the highest in the Northern Hemisphere (up to 4900 m), are among the least investigated systems and hence this book is timely and fills all-important knowledge gaps vis-à-vis treeline shifts, physiognomic, structural, and functional changes in mountain landscapes and ecosystems, particularly under the changing climate This book, for the first time, summarizes evidence-based knowledge about various aspects of treeline ecotone in Himalaya that was largely generated through a well-coordinated a team science approach. The book will be of interest to ecologists, climatologists, dendrochronologists, foresters, plant physiologists and resource managers and policy planners for a better understanding of the organization and dynamics of this fragile ecosystem in relation to climate change and other anthropogenic stresses that are rampant in the Himalaya. The book lays a solid foundation for further investigation of the ecology and dynamics of the treeline ecotone in the Himalayas and provides a rationale for pursuing a team science approach for macroecological investigations.

Description: The present work reports the effects of irradiation on vermiculite for the first time. The radiation-induced changes of vermiculite were studied using different techniques viz. ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), dielectric measurements, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and thermoluminescence (TL). In UV-Vis analysis, the Cody model was employed to calculate structural disorder from Urbach energy, which explained the variation of the optical band gap (direct and indirect) with different (1–2000 kGy) doses. XRD analysis of the pristine and irradiated samples shows that the crystallinity improved upon irradiation at dose up to 1000 kGy and deteriorated on further increase of the dose. A significant change was observed in the dielectric properties after irradiation. Data shows that ac conductivity is proportional to the nth power of frequency ( f n ) in pristine and irradiated vermiculite, with a slope n ranging between 0.52 and 0.76, which indicates that electronic conduction takes place through an electron hopping process. No appreciable changes in characteristic bands (FTIR) have been observed after irradiation, indicating that natural vermiculite is chemically stable. A well-defined TL peak around 132 °C and enhancement in its intensity with dose (1–1000 kGy) make vermiculite a perfect thermoluminescence dosimeter and indicates usefulness applications in radiation dosimetry.

Description: Aerosol emissions from biomass burning are of specific interest over the globe due to their strong radiative impacts and climate implications. The present study examines the impact of paddy crop-residue burning over northern India during the post-monsoon (Oct-Nov) season of 2012 on modification of aerosol properties, as well as the long-range transport of smoke plumes, altitude characteristics and affected areas via the synergy of ground-based measurements and satellite observations. During this period, MODIS images show a thick smoke/hazy aerosol layer below 2-2.5 km in the atmosphere covering nearly the whole Indo-Gangetic Plains (IGP). The air-mass trajectories originating from the biomass-burning source region over Punjab at 500 m reveal a potential aerosol transport pathway along the Ganges valley from west to east, resulting in a strong AOD gradient. Sometimes, depending upon the wind direction and meteorological conditions, the plumes also influence central India, the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, thus contributing to Asian pollution outflow. The increased number of fire counts (Terra and Aqua MODIS data) is associated with severe aerosol-laden atmospheres (AOD 500nm  〉 1.0) over six IGP locations, high values of Ångström exponent (〉1.2), high PM 2.5 concentrations (〉100-150 μ gm -3 ), enhanced OMI AI (~2.5) and NO 2 concentrations (~6x10 15 mol/cm 2 ), indicating the dominance of smoke aerosols from agricultural crop residue burning. The aerosol size distribution is shifted towards the fine-mode fraction, also exhibiting an increase in the radius of fine aerosols due to coagulation processes in a highly turbid environment. The spectral variation of the single scattering albedo reveals enhanced dominance of moderately absorbing aerosols, while the aerosol properties, modification and mixing atmospheric processes differentiate along the IGP sites depending on the distance from the aerosol source, urban influence and local characteristics.
