Kundu We have measured the proton decay probabilities of the Fe * 56 and Ti * 47 compound systems which are populated by the transfer reactions Cr 52 ( Li 6 , d ) Fe * 56 (surrogate of n + Fe 55 → Fe * 56 → p + Mn 55 ) and Sc 45 ( Li 6 , α ) Ti * 47 (surrogate of n + Ti 46 → 47 Ti * → p + Sc 46 ) reactions, respectively. Description: Atmospheric water is a resource equivalent to ~10% of all fresh water in lakes on Earth. However, an efficient process for capturing and delivering water from air, especially at low humidity levels (down to 20%), has not been developed. We report the design and demonstration of a device based on a porous metal-organic framework {MOF-801, [Zr 6 O 4 (OH) 4 (fumarate) 6 ]} that captures water from the atmosphere at ambient conditions by using low-grade heat from natural sunlight at a flux of less than 1 sun (1 kilowatt per square meter). This device is capable of harvesting 2.8 liters of water per kilogram of MOF daily at relative humidity levels as low as 20% and requires no additional input of energy.

Description: Magnetic structure evolution of multiferroic hexagonal YMn 1− x Fe x O 3 ( x  = 0, 0.05, and 0.1) has been studied by carrying out detailed temperature-dependent neutron diffraction at zero and 5 T fields. Thermodynamic data confirm antiferromagnetic ordering at T N in all the compositions. Our sub- T N neutron diffraction results assign the magnetic structure of pure YMnO 3 to Γ 1 irreducible representation. Over the perturbative-doping range, magnetic structure changes via Γ 1  + Γ 2 for YMn 0.95 Fe 0.05 O 3 on to Γ 2 for YMn 0.9 Fe 0.1 O 3 , as the maiden compositional analogue of spin-reorientation; its occurrence in temperature-domain already reported for several manganites. Moreover, while the large thermal isostructural changes observed above T N are subdued in the ordered state, small alterations by the applied 5 T-field are relatively uniform across, confirming strong magneto-elastic nature of the system. Decrease of the ordered magnetic moment ( μ ord ) and planar magnetic frustration noted with Fe-doping is enhanced by the applied field, apparently through canting.

Notes: Summary We study versions of the Kiyotaki-Wright (1989) model with fiat money and show that: (1) The use of a low storage cost fiat money may be necessary for specialization and trade, (2) there can be valued fiat money steady states which are indeterminate, (3) there are no nontrivial steady-states in which all trades consist of fiat money for goods, (4) fiat money may be valued even if it is not the least costly-to-store object, and lastly, (5) two fiat monies with different storage costs may both be valued.

Notes: Abstract Given a planar setS ofn points, maxdominance problems consist of computing, for everyp εS, some function of the maxima of the subset ofS that is dominated byp. A number of geometric and graph-theoretic problems can be formulated as maxdominance problems, including the problem of computing a minimum independent dominating set in a permutation graph, the related problem of finding the shortest maximal increasing subsequence, the problem of enumerating restricted empty rectangles, and the related problem of computing the largest empty rectangle. We give an algorithm for optimally solving a class of maxdominance problems. A straightforward application of our algorithm yields improved time bounds for the above-mentioned problems. The techniques used in the algorithm are of independent interest, and include a linear-time tree computation that is likely to arise in other contexts.

Notes: Abstract The complexity of adding twon-bit numbers on a two-dimensional systolic array is investigated. We consider different constraints on the systolic array, including: whether or not the input and output ports lie on the periphery of the array, constraints placed on the arrival and departure times of inputs and outputs . For all combinations of the above constraints, we obtain optimal tradeoffs among the resources of area, pipeline delay, and worst-case time. It turns out that there is a subtle interplay among the constraints and some of our results seem counterintuitive. For instance, we show that allowing more-significant bits to arrive earlier than less-significant bits can speed up addition by a factor of logn. We also show that multiplexing can often result in a smaller array. On the other hand, we show that some known results, such as Chazelle and Monier's bounds for arrays that have input/output ports on the perimeter, also hold in less constrained models.

Notes: Abstract A functionf on the non-negative integers is a context-free preserving function (cfpf) if and only if for every context-free languageL, {x|(∃y) (xy ∈ L, and |y| =f(|x|))} is a context-free language. In this note we give an algebraic characterization of the class of cfpf's.

Notes: Abstract This paper is concerned with the exact Bahadur efficiencies of spacings statistics. For a general class of statistics based on a fixed number of spacings, the explicit forms of the exact slopes are derived, and it is shown that the sum of the logarithms of spacings is optimal in this class. Some results are extended to the case where the number of spacings increase with the sample size to infinity.
