    Description: Electropolymerization of aniline at the graphite electrodes was achieved by potentiodynamic method. Electrodeposition of Pd (C-PANI-Pd) and Ni (C-PANI-Ni) and codeposition of Pd-Ni (C-PANI-Pd-Ni) microparticles into the polyaniline (PANI) film coated graphite (C-PANI) were carried out under galvanostatic control. The morphology and composition of the composite electrodes were obtained using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) techniques. The electrochemical behavior and electrocatalytic activity of the electrode were characterized using cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and chronoamperometric (CA) methods in acidic medium. The C-PANI-Pd-Ni electrode showed an improved catalytic performance towards methanol oxidation in terms of lower onset potential, higher anodic oxidation current, greater stability, lower activation energy, and lower charge transfer resistance. The enhanced electrocatalytic activity might be due to the greater permeability of C-PANI films for methanol molecules, better dispersion of Pd-Ni microparticles into the polymer matrixes, and the synergistic effects between the dispersed metal particles and their matrixes.

    Description: The bending strength and deformation characteristics of the debonded laminated plate under the uniformly distributed loading (UDL) have been investigated in this research article. For the simulation study, an internally damaged laminated plate structure model has been developed in ANSYS based on the first-order shear deformable kinematic theory via ANSYS parametric design language (APDL) code. The internal debonding within the laminated structure is incorporated using two sub-laminate approach. Further, the convergence (different mesh densities), as well as the validity (comparing the responses with published results) of the present simulation model, have been performed by solving the deflection responses under the influence of transversely loaded layered structure.     Description: We present quantum dynamical investigations of 16 O + 36 O 2 and 18 O + 32 O 2 exchange reactions using a time-independent quantum mechanical method and an accurate global potential energy surface of ozone [Dawes et al. , J. Chem. Phys. 135 , 081102 (2011)]. Initial state-selected integral cross sections, rate constants, and Boltzmann averaged thermal rate constants are obtained and compared with earlier experimental and theoretical results. The computed thermal rate constants for the oxygen exchange reactions exhibit a negative temperature dependence, as found experimentally. They are in better agreement with the experiments than the previous studies on the same reactions.

    Description: The natural selection and the evolutionary optimization of complex shapes in nature are closely related to their functions. Mechanostabilization of shape of biological structure via morphogenesis has several beautiful examples. With the help of simple mechanics-based modeling and experiments, we show an important causality between natural shape selection as evolutionary outcome and the mechanostabilization of seashells. The effect of biological growth on the mechanostabilization process is identified with examples of two natural shapes of seashells, one having a diametrically converging localization of stresses and the other having a helicoidally concentric localization of stresses. We demonstrate how the evolved shape enables predictable protection of soft body parts of the species. The effect of bioavailability of natural material is found to be a secondary factor compared to shape selectivity, where material microstructure only acts as a constraint to evolutionary optimization. This is confirmed by comparing the mechanostabilization behavior of three-dimensionally printed synthetic polymer structural shapes with that of natural seashells consisting of ceramic and protein. This study also highlights interesting possibilities in achieving a new design of structures made of ordinary materials which have bio-inspired optimization objectives.

    Description: Nickel is a silvery-white metal mostly used to enhance the value, utility, and lifespan of industrial equipment and components by protecting them from corrosion. Nickel is commonly used in the chemical and food processing industries to prevent iron from contamination. Since the properties of nickel can be controlled and varied over broad ranges, nickel plating finds numerous applications in industries. In the present investigation, pulse current electro-deposition technique has been used to deposit nickel on a high strength low alloy (HSLA) steel substrate.Coating of nickel is confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and EDAX analysis. Optical microscopy and SEM is used to assess the coating characteristics. Electrochemical polarization study has been carried out to study the corrosion behaviour of nickel coating and the polarisation curves have revealed that current density used during pulse electro-deposition plays a vital role on characteristics of nickel coating.

    Description: Based on extensive analysis of observations and a series of climate model experiments, here we establish that slow variations of northern hemispheric extra-tropical sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies can augment seasonal predictability of the south Asian monsoon. The SST conditions and performance of the south Asian monsoon during 2013 boreal summer months (June through September) led us to hypothesize that the strong extra-tropical SST anomalies in the north Pacific and north Atlantic in conjunction with weak tropical SST anomalies (weak La-Nina) were responsible for the above normal rainfall over India during 2013. We also argue that the 2013 SST pattern and above normal monsoon condition are not unique but occurred several occasions in the past. Further, we show that there is a complementary pattern of strong extra-tropical SST and weak tropical SST that is associated with below normal south Asian monsoon rainfall. We also show that the extra-tropical SST pattern in the northern hemisphere is associated with a low frequency interdecadal mode of variability indicating potential predictability associated with such extra-tropical SST forcing. Extensive experiments with an atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM) forced by such SST conditions elucidate the mechanism through which the extra-tropical SSTs influence the Indian monsoon. The SST anomalies affect the north–south temperature gradient and lead to a local displacement of the jet stream, setting up a quasi-stationary wave. Such a stationary wave, in turn, affect the tropospheric temperature (TT) over the southern Eurasia, influencing the north–south TT gradient in the region and thereby the Indian monsoon. Our discovery of this additional source of potential predictability together with the fact that the new generation coupled ocean–atmosphere models are capable in predicting the extra-tropical SST anomalies brightens the prospect of south Asian monsoon prediction.

    Description: The Indian Ocean sea surface temperature (SST) during the boreal summer has shown a significant warming of 0.3 °C in the recent decade (2001-2010) compared to a former decade (1979-1988) and it is most pronounced in the central tropical Indian Ocean. By using reanalysis and satellite-derived datasets, we investigated how the monsoon intraseasonal oscillation (MISO) over the south Asian summer monsoon (ASM) region has been influenced by the recent warming in the Indian Ocean. It is found that the MISO variance has increased over the ASM region in the recent period compared with the earlier decade. It is also noted that the characteristic northward propagation of the MISO has slowed over 2001-2010, resembling more of a standing oscillation near the equator. Mechanisms implicated in the observed MISO changes are explored by conducting several model sensitivity experiments with an atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM). The model experiments suggest that the mean SST increase over the Indian Ocean and the associated changes in the air sea interaction, the increased mean moisture convergence, and changes in the large-scale circulation are responsible for the changes in the characteristics of the MISO. The influence of the recent Indian Ocean warming on the MISO characteristics must be understood fully since they determine the seasonal amount of rainfall over the Indian subcontinent. An examination of future projections of the MISO using the MPI-ESM-LR model from the CMIP5 archive also gives consistent result.

    Description: Rotationally resolved reaction probabilities, integral cross sections, and rate constant for the H + + H 2 ( v = 0, j = 0 or 1) → H 2 ( v ′ = 0, j ′) + H + reaction are calculated using a time-independent quantum mechanical method and the potential energy surface of Kamisaka et al. [J. Chem. Phys.116, 654 (2002)] (say KBNN PES). All partial wave contributions of the total angular momentum, J , are included to obtain converged cross sections at low collision energies and rate constants at low temperatures. In order to test the accuracy of the KBNN PES, the results obtained here are compared with those obtained in our earlier work [P. Honvault et al. , Phys. Rev. Lett.107, 023201 (2011)] using the accurate potential energy surface of Velilla et al. [J. Chem. Phys.129, 084307 (2008)]. Integral cross sections and rate constants obtained on the two potential energy surfaces considered here show remarkable differences in terms of magnitude and dependence on collision energy (or temperature) which can be attributed to the differences observed in the topography of the surfaces near to the entrance channel. This clearly shows the inadequacy of the KBNN PES for calculations at low collision energies.
