Description: Recently, GBR1, a seven-transmembrane domain protein with high affinity for gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)B receptor antagonists, was identified. Here, a GBR1-related protein, GBR2, was shown to be coexpressed with GBR1 in many brain regions and to interact with it through a short domain in the carboxyl-terminal cytoplasmic tail. Heterologously expressed GBR2 mediated inhibition of adenylyl cyclase; however, inwardly rectifying potassium channels were activated by GABAB receptor agonists only upon coexpression with GBR1 and GBR2. Thus, the interaction of these receptors appears to be crucial for important physiological effects of GABA and provides a mechanism in receptor signaling pathways that involve a heterotrimeric GTP-binding protein.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Kuner, R -- Kohr, G -- Grunewald, S -- Eisenhardt, G -- Bach, A -- Kornau, H C -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1999 Jan 1;283(5398):74-7.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉BASF-LYNX Bioscience AG, Department of Neuroscience, Im Neuenheimer Feld 515, D-69120 Heidelberg, Germany.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9872744" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: A stochastic background of gravitational waves is expected to arise from a superposition of a large number of unresolved gravitational-wave sources of astrophysical and cosmological origin. It should carry unique signatures from the earliest epochs in the evolution of the Universe, inaccessible to standard astrophysical observations. Direct measurements of the amplitude of this background are therefore of fundamental importance for understanding the evolution of the Universe when it was younger than one minute. Here we report limits on the amplitude of the stochastic gravitational-wave background using the data from a two-year science run of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO). Our result constrains the energy density of the stochastic gravitational-wave background normalized by the critical energy density of the Universe, in the frequency band around 100 Hz, to be 〈6.9 x 10(-6) at 95% confidence. The data rule out models of early Universe evolution with relatively large equation-of-state parameter, as well as cosmic (super)string models with relatively small string tension that are favoured in some string theory models. This search for the stochastic background improves on the indirect limits from Big Bang nucleosynthesis and cosmic microwave background at 100 Hz.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉LIGO Notes: Abstract We generate and identify multi-vortices of the 2D Abelian Higgs model on a finite lattice by relaxation of Monte Carlo equilibrium configurations. The lattice vortices have action and a uniquely defined topological charge corresponding to the continuum ones. They exhibit the expected exponential decay behaviour and satisfy approximately the classical equations of motion. Vortex-antivortex superpositions are seen as well, supporting the dilute gas picture. Single vortices finally relax into “dislocations” and disappear. A background charge construction turns out nearly insensitive with respect to dislocations.

Notes: Abstract The experiments on pt fusion performed at Paul Scherrer Institut, Villigen, Switzerland, are described. Liquid triple mixtures of protium, deuterium and tritium with low concentrations on deuterium and tritium were used. Gamma rays, X-rays, neutrons and, for the first time, conversion muons, were measured. Preliminary results are: Rate for spin flip from the triplet to the singlet state of tμ(1s), λ10=(1.0±0.2) × 103μs−1; rate for muon-catalyzed pt fusion from the (I=1) nuclear-spin state, λ pt f (I=1)=0.07±0.01μs−1; and the molecular formation rate, λ pt m =(7.5±1.3)μs−1 (all normalized to liquid hydrogen density).
