    Description: 〈span〉〈div〉ABSTRACT〈/div〉A subsurface landslide is the key problem to a large affordable home program in the southern Qinshui Basin, China. A geophysical survey integrated with seismic refraction tomography (SRT), seismic scattered wave imaging (SSI), and electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) was performed along five profiles over the landslide body. The bedrock surface was a crucial interface, represented by a relatively high velocity, high density, and high resistivity in contrast to the unconsolidated soil and landslide material above it. Based on the most comparable geophysical features, several problems were uncovered such as a “sandwich velocity structure” in the SRT results, velocity trap in the SSI results, and rapid variations in the local topography in all three methods. Aiming to improve the comprehensive interpretation of the ERT, SRT, SSI data, the vertical gradient extremum in the ERT and SRT data and tracing the target wave group according to the velocity sensitivity in the SSI data were analyzed. Moreover, a joint interpretation of the three geophysical survey datasets as well as 32 geological wells and 73 geotechnical boreholes helped to determine one undulating bedrock surface, delineate two types of failure surface geometry (landslide surface and collapse surface), and identify three external shapes in the ex situ body (ancient river channel, landslide body and collapse body). The results showed that the integrated geophysical survey not only provided detailed evidence for the existing of landslide but also presented meaningful evidence for the sliding mechanism. These results were difficult to fully describe and to apply to understanding landslide processes. Furthermore, for near-surface landslide events, the joint interpretation of geologic, geotechnical and geophysical data was necessary to reduce problems with any single geophysical survey.〈/span〉

    Description: Fluid Reynolds stress from turbulence has usually been considered to be responsible for the anomalous toroidal momentum transport in tokamak plasma. Experiment by Müller et al . [Phys. Rev. Lett. 106 , 115001 (2011)], however, reported that neither the observed edge rotation profile nor the inward momentum transport phenomenon at the edge region of an H-mode plasma could be explained by the fluid Reynolds stress measured with reciprocating Langmuir-probe. The full-function gyrokinetic code XGC1 is used to explain, for the first time, Müller et al .'s experimental observations. It is discovered that, unlike in the plasma core, the fluid Reynolds stress from turbulence is not sufficient for momentum transport physics in plasma edge. The “turbulent neoclassical” physics arising from the interaction between kinetic neoclassical orbit dynamics and plasma turbulence is key in the tokamak edge region across the plasma pedestal into core.

    Description: Multi-species kinetic neoclassical transport through the QH-mode pedestal and scrape-off layer on DIII-D is calculated using XGC0, a 5D full-f particle-in-cell drift-kinetic solver with self-consistent neutral recycling and sheath potentials. Quantitative agreement between the flux-driven simulation and the experimental electron density, impurity density, and orthogonal measurements of impurity temperature and flow profiles is achieved by adding random-walk particle diffusion to the guiding-center drift motion. The radial electric field (E r ) that maintains ambipolar transport across flux surfaces and to the wall is computed self-consistently on closed and open magnetic field lines and is in excellent agreement with experiment. The E r inside the separatrix is the unique solution that balances the outward flux of thermal tail deuterium ions against the outward neoclassical electron flux and inward pinch of impurity and colder deuterium ions. Particle transport in the pedestal is primarily due to anomalous transport, while the ion heat and momentum transport are primarily due to the neoclassical transport. The full-f treatment quantifies the non-Maxwellian energy distributions that describe a number of experimental observations in low-collisionallity pedestals on DIII-D, including intrinsic co-I p parallel flows in the pedestal, ion temperature anisotropy, and large impurity temperatures in the scrape-off layer.

    Description: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small RNAs ~22 nt in length that are involved in the regulation of a variety of physiological and pathological processes. Advances in high-throughput small RNA sequencing (smRNA-seq), one of the next-generation sequencing applications, have reshaped the miRNA research landscape. In this study, we established an integrative database, the YM500 ( http://ngs.ym.edu.tw/ym500/ ), containing analysis pipelines and analysis results for 609 human and mice smRNA-seq results, including public data from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) and some private sources. YM500 collects analysis results for miRNA quantification, for isomiR identification (incl. RNA editing), for arm switching discovery, and, more importantly, for novel miRNA predictions. Wetlab validation on 〉100 miRNAs confirmed high correlation between miRNA profiling and RT-qPCR results ( R = 0.84). This database allows researchers to search these four different types of analysis results via our interactive web interface. YM500 allows researchers to define the criteria of isomiRs, and also integrates the information of dbSNP to help researchers distinguish isomiRs from SNPs. A user-friendly interface is provided to integrate miRNA-related information and existing evidence from hundreds of sequencing datasets. The identified novel miRNAs and isomiRs hold the potential for both basic research and biotech applications.
