    Notes: Does the need for sustainable development hinder businesses’ ability to create value? Is a firm’s competitiveness negatively affected by considering that need? After quickly reviewing the main literature contributions on the relationship between business and society, and drawing from resource-based view of the firm and sustainable development literature, this paper presents a proposal for a dynamic and sustainable view of the firm. It shows how considering the changes introduced into the competitive landscape by sustainable development influences the way in which companies develop their resources, capabilities and activities, fostering the persistence of competitive advantages based on knowledge and innovation.

    Notes: Purpose - Although an extensive body of research treats the fields of corporate governance and sustainable development separately, less attention has been paid to the interaction between both fields. This paper attempts to bridge this gap by examining how corporate governance systems are evolving in order to integrate sustainable development thinking into them. Design/methodology/approach - Drawing from corporate governance, sustainable development, and stakeholder theory literature, an analysis is performed of the governance systems of the 18 corporations that are leading the market sectors considered by the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index. Findings - The results of our in-depth analysis of the 18 cases are presented and the sustainable corporate governance model that emerges from that analysis is proposed. Research limitations/implications - This model does not attempt to question or replace the previous recommendation and frameworks suggested in the literature on corporate governance and codes of governance. On the contrary, the model should be viewed as a way of integrating sustainable development/corporate responsibility into the fabric of already existing governance models suggested elsewhere. Originality/value - The suggested model seems to be a good framework both for managers and for researchers because it can be used to improve the firm's governance systems as well as a guide for future research on sustainable corporate governance.

    Notes: Abstract This study evaluated the responses of wild, adult plants of Enteromorpha compressa, and their progeny, to various copper concentrations. Experiments were designed to test the hypotheses that: 1) individuals of E. compressa from Caleta Palito, a copper-enriched coastal locality, tolerate higher copper concentrations than those from a place with no history of copper pollution and 2) such copper tolerance is under genetic control and therefore, was an inherited character. Our results indicate that algae which inhabit a copper-enriched environment tolerate higher concentrations of copper than those from waters with low copper concentrations. On the other hand, our results suggest that generalizations regarding heritability of the tolerance to copper do not apply to the Chilean E. compressa, as no differences in growth or rhizoid production were found between the progeny from Caleta Palito and Caleta Zenteno. These findings are an indication that heritability and adaptation may represent alternative strategies used by different populations of the same algal species to tolerate copper.

    Notes: Abstract This study reports some epidemiological aspects of the infections of Mazzaella laminarioides by Endophyton sp. and Pleurocapsa sp., the organisms associated with the green patch and deformative diseases respectively. Infections affected an important segment of the host population and persisted throughout the year. The main infecting organism was Endophyton sp. Frequency, density and intensity index showed seasonal variations, with lower values in winter. It is suggested that tissue weakening and changes in the biomechanical properties of the infected individuals could be the responsible for this seasonal pattern of variation. This study demonstrates that, at the host population level, the two life history stages of M. laminarioides are susceptible to the pathogens. We also detected an association between reproduction of the host and infection, although the basis for it are unknown. The two pathogens showed different intra-frond distribution, with Endophyton sp. affecting preferentially the base of the frond. The spatial distribution within the beach was different for each pathogen. The main impact of Pleurocapsa sp. was recorded at the center, more protected sector of the beach.

    Notes: Summary A simple procedure is described for removing Epon resin from semi-thin 1 μm sections, which permits excellent postembedding immunohistochemical staining (avidin-biotin complex technique). The procedure was developed for the detection of growth hormone and prolactin in bovine adenohypophysis fixed with 2% paraformaldehyde and 0.5% glutaraldehyde in 0.1 m sodium cacodylate buffer pH 7.4–7.6. The results indicate that the removal of the epoxy embedding medium prior to the application of the immunohistochemical reagents was essential for the successful localization of the antigenic determinants of the two hormones. The immunocytochemical reactivity was obtained only after treating the sections with a solution of potassium hydroxide in a mixture of absolute methyl alcohol and propylene oxide (Maxwell's solution). An enhanced immunoreactivity was obtained when this treatment was followed by an additional treatment with either 4% hydrogen peroxide or a saturated aqueous solution of sodium metaperiodate. Because of the easy preparation of the Epon removal solution and the good structural preservation without damage to the antigenic determinants, Maxwell's solution is suggested as a good etching agent which can be used in immunohistochemical studies on semi-thin sections with excellent results.

    Description: The phylogenetic composition of the heterotrophic microbial community is depth stratified in the oceanic water column down to abyssopelagic layers. In the layers below the euphotic zone, it has been suggested that heterotrophic microbes rely largely on solubilized particulate organic matter as a carbon and energy source rather than on dissolved organic matter. To decipher whether changes in the phylogenetic composition with depth are reflected in changes in the bacterial and archaeal transporter proteins, we generated an extensive metaproteomic and metagenomic dataset of microbial communities collected from 100- to 5,000-m depth in the Atlantic Ocean.

    Description: Upon phosphorus (P) deficiency, marine phytoplankton reduce their requirements for P by replacing membrane phospholipids with alternative non-phosphorus lipids. It was very recently demonstrated that a SAR11 isolate also shares this capability when phosphate starved in culture. Yet, the extent to which this process occurs in other marine heterotrophic bacteria and in the natural environment is unknown. Here, we demonstrate that the substitution of membrane phospholipids for a variety of non-phosphorus lipids is a conserved response to P deficiency among phylogenetically diverse marine heterotrophic bacteria, including members of the Alphaproteobacteria and Flavobacteria. By deletion mutagenesis and complementation in the model marine bacterium Phaeobacter sp. MED193 and heterologous expression in recombinant Escherichia coli, we confirm the roles of a phospholipase C (PlcP) and a glycosyltransferase in lipid remodelling. Analyses of the Global Ocean Sampling and Tara Oceans metagenome data sets demonstrate that PlcP is particularly abundant in areas characterized by low phosphate concentrations. Furthermore, we show that lipid remodelling occurs seasonally and responds to changing nutrient conditions in natural microbial communities from the Mediterranean Sea. Together, our results point to the key role of lipid substitution as an adaptive strategy enabling heterotrophic bacteria to thrive in the vast P-depleted areas of the ocean.

    Description: 〈jats:p〉Genes of unknown function are among the biggest challenges in molecular biology, especially in microbial systems, where 40–60% of the predicted genes are unknown. Despite previous attempts, systematic approaches to include the unknown fraction into analytical workflows are still lacking. Here, we present a conceptual framework, its translation into the computational workflow AGNOSTOS and a demonstration on how we can bridge the known-unknown gap in genomes and metagenomes. By analyzing 415,971,742 genes predicted from 1749 metagenomes and 28,941 bacterial and archaeal genomes, we quantify the extent of the unknown fraction, its diversity, and its relevance across multiple organisms and environments. The unknown sequence space is exceptionally diverse, phylogenetically more conserved than the known fraction and predominantly taxonomically restricted at the species level. From the 71 M genes identified to be of unknown function, we compiled a collection of 283,874 lineage-specific genes of unknown function for 〈jats:italic〉Cand〈/jats:italic〉. Patescibacteria (also known as Candidate Phyla Radiation, CPR), which provides a significant resource to expand our understanding of their unusual biology. Finally, by identifying a target gene of unknown function for antibiotic resistance, we demonstrate how we can enable the generation of hypotheses that can be used to augment experimental data.〈/jats:p〉
