Notes: Abstract The influence of environmental parameters (temperature, salinity and available food) on the condition, reproductive activity and biochemical composition of a native population of Ostrea edulis L. in San Cibran (Galicia, Spain) was studied between September 1988 and December 1989. Histological preparations of gonads showed that gametogenesis started when temperature was at its lowest in winter. The water temperature in San Cibran never fell low enough to interrupt it. Gametogenesis proceeded slowly and spawning took place in May–June, although the predicted time of ripening was early March. Salinity in San Cibran was relatively stable throughout the year; it did not seem to have any influence on gametogenesis. Available food appeared to be a very important factor in controlling gonad growth, once gametogenesis was initiated. The major concentration of suspended organic particulate matter was present in the spring at the time of rapid gonadal maturation. Only one spawning period was observed. Larvae were released when the food in the water was high. Seasonal changes in the main biochemical components of this oyster were determined for a standard individual. Lipids and carbohydrates presented a similar time-course whereas proteins were constant. When food was abundant, energy reserves were built up. Spawning produced a decrease in biochemical constituent levels, and recovery coincided with the phytoplankton bloom. The stored reserves, mainly lipids, were used to overcome a state of energy imbalance in late autumn associated with low food availability. Results show this oyster to be an opportunist organism which concentrates its reproductive effort during a short period of favourable conditions and which is directly dependent on nutritive availability in the environment.

Notes: Abstract An energy budget for metamorphosis in oyster spatOstrea edulis L., collected in the Instituto Español de Oceanografía during March–April 1988, was determined. The energy cost of metamorphosis was calculated from measurements of biochemical components which form the principal reserves of energy and which are used significantly during metamorphosis. The results indicated that protein supplied most of the energy inO. edulis spat. The idea that neutral lipids were used selectively as an energy reserve during the metamorphosis of this bivalve marine larvae was questioned.

Notes: Abstract A novel technique for the fabrication of high aspect ratio three-dimensional (3D) microstructures is presented. A suitable resist (e.g. PMMA or SU-8) is exposed using focused MeV (million electron volt) protons in a direct write process to produce 3D microstructures with sub-micrometer feature sizes. By adjusting the energy of the proton beam, the depth of the microstructures can be controlled very accurately (e.g. between 5 and 160 μm). Single layer SU-8, a newly developed, chemically accelerated, negative tone, near UV, photo-resist, has been used in multiple exposures using different proton energies to produce intricate 3D microstructures. The combination of a well controlled exposure depth coupled with the ability to tilt the sample with respect to the beam increases the manufacturing capability, and allows the production of complex microstructures with well defined edges in single layers of resist.

Notes: Two-year-old rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum), females were fed three different diets containing animal protein R1 or vegetable protein R2 and R3 over 12 months from March 1993 until February 1994. Diets containing vegetable protein slightly depressed broodstock growth rates, although the final weight differences among groups were not statistically significant. The mean total fecundity (eggs female−1) was significantly higher (P〈0.05) in group R1. With regard egg composition, amino acids levels in group R3 were significantly lower (P〈0.05) than in the other groups. Although the total amino acids of eggs from the R1 and R2 groups presented a similar pattern, the essential amino acids lysine, threonine, cystine and isoleucine were lower in the R2 group. The ω 6 and ω3 fatty acid levels of the eggs were also affected by the protein source of the diet. In both the R2 and R3 groups, the plasma levels of 17β-estradiol reached a maximum level one month later than the R1 group. For the R2 and R3 groups, plasma levels of vitellogenin peaked after a one-month delay; peak values were significantly lower (P〈 0.05) than in the R1 group. Similarly, the vitellogenin content of the eggs was in accordance with plasma levels in broodstock females. The results of the present study demonstrated that the composition of diet significantly affected reproductive indices and composition of the eggs.

Notes: The samples are prepared by the coprecipitation method.1 The average particle size is 0.07 μm, which is less than critical single-domain size. Thermomagnetic curves (TMC) of thermally demagnetized samples are studied between 300 and 800 K in external fields up to 8 kOe by VSM. An experimental curve with a well-expressed maximum closely below the Curie temperature (so-called Hopkinson effect) is shown on Fig. 1 (curve 1). Curve 2 on the figure shows a TMC calculated on the basis of the Stoner–Wohlfarth model, following the method described in Ref. 2. There is a good agreement between the experimental and calculated curves. This agreement becomes better when the thermal activation processes are taken into account.3 These results can be considered as an experimental confirmation of the existence of the Hopkinson effect in systems of single-domain particles.〈ks〉

Notes: Summary The combination of several thermodynamic variables based upon the data provided by a radiosounding can be useful for the forecasting of thunderstorms. As a matter of fact, there are many indices that allow the establishment of a storm risk prediction once they have been gauged. The problem comes when not all indices lead to the same prediction. In these cases, it is necessary to establish one single function based on the information provided by all the variables employed, which should be able to determine a two-fold prediction: risk or no risk. This article presents a statistic model for the short tem prediction of thunderstorms in the region of León (Spain). To reach this aim 15 meteorological variables were selected. These variables were easy to handle by non-expert staff, and they allowed the characterisation of the preconvective environment early in the morning on thunderstorm days. The variables have been properly combined and gauged with the help of a dense network of meteorological observers. The result has led to the construction of a reliable model. The discriminant quadratic model has been easily applied to determine in an objective and binary way the risk/no risk for the occurrence of thunderstorms.

Notes: Abstract Eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA) acid productivities from chemostat cultures of an isolate of Isochrysis galbana have been studied. The productivities reached in the interval of dilution rates between 0.0295 h−1 and 0.0355 h−1 were 1.5mg·1−1·h−1 for lipids, 300 μg·1−1·h−1 for EPA and 130μg1·1−1·h−1 for DHA. Furthermore, light attenuation by mutual shading, and agitation speed influences on growth and fatty acid composition were analysed. A model relating steady-state dilution rates to internal average light intensity has been proposed, the parameter values of which obtained by non-linear regression were: maximum specific growth rate (μmax)=0.0426 h−1; the affinity of cells to light (Ik) = 10.92 W·m−2; the exponent (n) = 5.13; regression coefficient (r 2)=0.9999.

Notes: The oogenic cycle and biochemical composition of the ovary of raft-cultured great scallop (Pecten maximus) were studied during the period April 1990–July 1991. The ovary condition index (FGI) and stereological studies showed the existence of two principal spawning periods, winter and late spring-early summer. No sexual resting period was found. Oocyte lysis was high throughout the year. Ovarian lipid levels displayed a clear seasonal pattern linked to the gametogenic cycle. Total lipid (TL, 16–21% dry weight), acylglycerol (AG, 20–65% TL) and free sterol (FS, 2.8–6.4% TL) levels were, generally, higher in the ripe ovary and a decrease coincided with spawning. Protein (59–63% dry weight), glycogen (〈3% dry weight) and phospholipid (PL, 26–35% TL) levels showed no clear seasonal trend. The TL and AG were a good index of ovarian sexual maturity. The TL % of dry weight) correlated well with the female gonad condition index (r s = 0.779, p 〈 0.001), and AG (% f TL) correlated well with the mean oocyte diameter (r s = 0.630, p 〈 0.01) and the female gonad condition index (r s = 0.443, p 〈 0.05).
