    Description: In the abandoned slate quarry of Guernanic, Gourin (Morbihan, France), a single horizon (Upper Member of the Schistes de Postolonnec Formation) has yielded an exquisitely preserved Llandeilian (Middle Ordovician) echinoderm assemblage composed of the ophiuroid Taeniaster armoricanus sp. nov. and the mitrate Mitrocystella incipiens. These two groups of echinoderms represent the first fossils formally described from the Middle Ordovician of the Gourin area. The brittlestar T. armoricanus sp. nov. is the third and oldest ophiuroid reported so far in the Palaeozoic of the Armorican Massif. The mitrate Mitrocystella is also described for the first time from western Brittany. Taphonomic features of this ophiuroid-stylophoran aggregation suggest that it probably corresponds to the rapid burial of a life assemblage in an otherwise quiet and moderately deep setting (shelf) below, but close to, storm wave base. This echinoderm association represents the oldest evidence for a gregarious mode of life for ophiuroids, as well as the oldest indisputable example of a mixed ophiuroid-stylophoran meadow.

    Notes: Abstract Purpose. To understand the molecular mechanisms involved in protein–methylidene malonate 2.1.2 polymer interactions. Methods. To assess the importance of electrostatic forces in polymer-protein interactions use was made of HAS and its derivatives, which were anionized by succinylation and aconitylation. Surface plasmon resonance measurements, using the three HSA molecules as immobilized ligands and polymer nanoparticles as analytes in the liquid phase, allowed the determination of initial kinetic constants and affinity constants at equilibrium at two different temperatures. Results. Saturation of binding for the three proteins occurred at approximately 900 protein molecules/nanoparticle. The apparent affinity decreased with increasing electronegativity of the proteins. Surface plasmon resonance measurement of proteins, covalently linked to the chip matrix, showed a high affinity for the nanoparticles (KA ≈ 1010 M-1) and confirmed the moderate decrease of affinity with increasing electronegativity of the modified albumins. Measurements at 25 and 37°C showed no significant increase in the albumin-nanoparticle interactions. Dissociation of the proteins from the nanoparticles could only be realized with chaotropic salt solutions. Conclusions. These results suggest the molecular forces initiating the protein-nanoparticle interactions are mainly of electrostatic nature followed by stabilization by hydrophobic forces. The high affinity confirms the nanoparticles as excellent carriers for protein delivery.

    Notes: Summary Antisera raised in rabbits against myelin basic proteins (MBP) and Wolfgram W1 protein isolated from rat myelin were used to study the maturation of oligodendrocytes in the developing rat nervous system. Both proteins were localized immunohistochemically at the light and electron microscopical levels in rat brain from the time of their first appearance to the adult stage. Oligodendrocytes were first detected by their positive staining with W1 antiserum two days after birth and at 1–3 days later with MBP antiserum. At 8–10 days, the number of oligodendrocytes labelled with both sera increases and the myelinated fibre pathways were clearly visible. Labelling with W1 antiserum was observed in oligodendrocytes at all stages from 2 days after birth to adulthood and in myelin fibres when they were present. In contrast, staining of oligodendroglial cells with MBP declined during the period of rapid myelination (20–25 days after birth) and finally disappeared, whereas myelin staining was still apparent. The electron microscopical study revealed that the synthesis of Wolfgram proteins occurred mostly at the peripheral cytoplasmic ribosomes of the cells, from where they were probably transported to processes engaged in myelination. The electron micrographs also showed that the sites of MBP synthesis seemed to be more uniformly distributed over the entire cytoplasm.

    Notes: Abstract In response to cytokine stimulation, the inducible isoform of the nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) produces large amounts of nitric oxide with potential consequences in the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis. Previous investigations have demonstrated the presence of iNOS in human atherosclerotic lesions. The goal of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of the expression of iNOS in ruptured versus non-ruptured human carotid atherosclerotic plaques. Using plastic-embedded sections, we performed in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry on very advanced atherosclerotic lesions type V (non-ruptured) and type VI (ruptured) from 12 atheromatous carotid arteries from endarterectomy and six non-atherosclerotic internal mammary arteries from aorto-coronary bypass. Only one internal mammary artery expressed iNOS in the endothelium. In contrast, iNOS mRNA and protein were repeatedly expressed in advanced lesions type V in 5/7 cases, particularly in inflammatory regions. Specific cell markers identified iNOS-positive cells as macrophages and T-lymphocytes but also as smooth muscle cells and endothelial cells adjacent to these inflammatory regions. Nitration of protein tyrosines was not always associated to iNOS expression but more likely to the presence of inflammatory cells. In complicated lesions type VI, the occurrence of iNOS mRNA and protein expression diminished drastically (1/5 cases). Combined expression of iNOS mRNA and protein is frequently found in advanced but non-ruptured human atherosclerotic carotid lesions while it becomes rare after the plaque has ruptured. These findings suggest that iNOS could be an active participant in the plaque rupture event.

A linear relationship has been found between the logarithms of the capacity factors and the energy values of the interaction of these compounds with this stationary phase.
