    Notes: Abstract Measurements of the turbulent wind and temperature fluctuations were carried out in the vicinity of the roof level, over an urban surface at a site where mean gradients of wind speed and temperature were also available. The measurement heights were about 23 and 28 m above ground, the local roof level being 18 m. Measurements were taken on top of a building (at (z=23 and 28 m) and over a street canyon (atz=23 m), i.e., fully within the urban roughness sublayer. The scaled variances of temperature and wind velocity, as well as the non-dimensional gradients of wind speed and temperature, are presented and discussed in terms of departures from Monin-Obukhov similarity theory. Local scaling is found to be a useful concept for the description of turbulence within a roughness sublayer. Expressions for the scaled velocity variances are presented that are valid for all measurement positions; they compare well with results from other urban studies. The non-dimensional gradient of mean wind speed is found to be well represented by the semi-empirical functions for the inertial sublayer if locally scaled. At 5 m above roof level, however, the variability due to horizontal inhomogeneity becomes very large. The non-dimensional temperature gradient, on the other hand, is height dependent and not well defined over the present rough urban surface.

    Notes: Abstract The Reynolds stress field of the urban roughness sublayer is studied experimentally at a site in the centre of Zürich (Switzerland). Turbulence observations at various heights within and above a street canyon are used together with profiles of mean variables to determine an average profile of Reynolds stress for the lowest few tens of meters of an urban roughness sublayer. The spatially averaged net vertical transport of momentum or Reynolds stress is found to be essentially zero at a height close to the average zero plane displacement and increases higher up in the urban roughness sublayer. A parameterisation for the height dependence is provided based on the height above zero plane displacement and a reference friction velocity. Resultes of a quadrant analysis for Reynolds stress indicate that eddies of the organized shear flow are broken up in the vicinity of the zero plane displacement into smaller, less correlated (random) flow patterns. Although not constant with height, turbulent flux of momentum is shown to be the relevant process for the description of the profile of mean wind speed even in the urban roughness sublayer.

    Notes: Abstract A method to estimate the zero plane displacement is presented that is based onin situ turbulence measurements. As it does not depend on flux-gradient relations. It can be applied over non-homogeneous surfaces if they are dynamically but not thermally distorted. The zero plane displacement at an urban site is found to vary considerably with wind direction. The results compare well with estimates from conventional methods using the heights and distribution of the upwind roughness elements.

    Notes: Abstract Turbulence measurements from a 30 m tower in the stably stratifiedboundary layer over the Greenland ice sheet are analyzed. The observationsinclude profile and eddy-correlation measurements at various levels. Atfirst, the analysis of the turbulence data from the lowest level (2 m aboveground) shows that the linear form of the non-dimensional wind profile(ϕm) is in good agreement with the observations for z/L 〈0.4, whereL represents the Obukhov length. A linear regression yieldsϕm=1+5.8z/L. The non-dimensional temperature profile (ϕh) at the2m level shows no tendency to increase with increasing stability. The datafrom the upper levels of the tower are analyzed in terms of both localscaling and surface-layer scaling. The ϕm and the ϕh values show atendency to level off at large stability (z/Λ〉0.4) where Λrepresents the local Obukhov length. Hence, the linear form of the ϕfunctions is no longer appropriate under such conditions. The bestcorrespondence to the data can be achieved when using the expression ofBeljaars and Holtslag for ϕm and ϕh. The vertical profiles of theturbulent fluxes, the wind velocity variances and temperature variance arealso determined. The momentum flux profile and the profiles of wind speedvariances are in general agreement with other observations if a welldeveloped low-level wind maximum occurs, and the height of this maximum isused as a height scale.

    Notes: Abstract The impact of new technologies has been mostly under-estimated in the past and, as a result, the transitions from one era to another have occurred more or less by chance. The MANTO research project is intended to avoid mischances. So it indicates potential developments in the telecommunications sector and, in particular, investigates their effects upon transport and settlement and also upon society, the economy and the environment. Nevertheless, MANTO does not merely take a look at the future, like the Greek oracle from whom it takes its name; by means of concrete recommendations, MANTO is intended to provide persons in responsible positions with a tool with which they can consciously organise that future. Risky developments are to be precluded in advance while desirable consequences are to be promoted.

    Notes: Summary Simulated temperature and precipitation changes over western Europe for a scenario of doubled atmospheric concentrations of CO2 are presented. The simulations are performed using a Limited Area Model LAM (RegCM2) nested into a General Circulation Model (ECHAM3). Both model components are operated at very high spatial resolutions — approximately 120 km for the GCM and 20 km for the LAM; the LAM domain encompasses a region of 1100 × 1100 km squared. Climatologies for five January and five July periods have been simulated. Average surface (2 m) temperatures are found to increase by 1.4 K in winter (January) and 3.9 K in summer (July); this latter figure is, however, largely dependent on a positive bias in the summer temperature fields of the driving GCM. Average precipitation changes are generally small in absolute values, but exhibit considerable spatial variability. Large precipitation amounts are seen to be shifted towards higher elevations with a corresponding reduction in the ‘upwind’ areas. The results are discussed taking into account the ‘predictive skill’ of the modelling system, which is derived from comparing the simulated present day temperature and precipitation fields to the corresponding climatological information. A method is introduced to assess the reliability of climate scenario predictions — such as those discussed here — on the basis of this predictive skill.
