In:  Supplement to: Belyaeva, Alexandra N; Romankevich, Evgeny A (1982): Organic matter in a water column of the Barents Sea. Oceanology, 22(2), 188-195
    Publication Date: 2023-05-12
Description: Concentration of dissolved and suspended organic carbon in the Barents Sea decreases with increasing depth and in meridional direction from south to north. This fact is attributed to uneven supply of organic matter (OM) from different sources. Large amounts of OM are present in the water column of the Barents Sea, which is a result of high productivity of this water mass and slow decomposition of OM at low temperatures and lowered activity of microflora. Larger amount of OM reaches bottom sediments of the Barents Sea more than in seas, which have similar depth and productivity, but are located at low latitudes. Characteristic features of distribution of lipids and suspended matter in sea water are examined.

    Publication Date: 2023-05-12
Description: Carbon in lipids separated from organic matter of fish and marine mammal bones from bottom of the Pacific and Atlantic oceans has d13C values ranging from -21.6 to -25.8 per mil and is isotopically lighter than that in lipids and total organic matter of host sediments. During fossilization of organic phosphate carbon isotope composition of bound lipids of fish bone becomes lighter and that of bones of mammals becomes heavier, possibly as a result of metabolisms of these organisms and composition of phospholipids in them.

    Publication Date: 2023-05-12
Description: Using gas chromatography technique we examined molecular composition of n-alkanes and lignin from bottom sediments of a core 385 cm long collected in the region of the Blake-Bahama Abyssal Plain. We determined C_org concentrations and lignin composition in soils, mangrove roots and leaves, in algae Sargassum and Ascophyllum, in corals and timber of a sunken ship; they were compared with data on lignin in bottom sediments. Mixed planktonogenic and terrigenous origin of organic matter in the core was proved with different proportions of terrigenous and planktonogenic components at different levels. Multiple changes in dominating sources of organic matter over a period required for accumulation of a four meter thick sedimentary sequence (about 4 m) are shown as obtained from changes in composition and contents of organic-chemical markers referring to classes of n-alkanes and phenols.

    Publication Date: 2023-05-12
Description: Analysis of molecular composition of alkanes in bottom sediments of the southern part of Dvina Bay (White Sea) in October 2001 revealed the following main peculiarities of hydrocarbon behavior in the estuary: dominating of high molecular C23-C45 compounds and irregular distribution of hydrocarbons in bottom sediments as a result of high sedimentation rate and active hydrodynamics in the studied area.

    Publication Date: 2023-05-12
Description: The book is devoted to study of diagenetic changes of organic matter and mineral part of sediments and interstitial waters of the Pacific Ocean due to physical-chemical and microbiological processes. Microbiological studies deal with different groups of bacteria. Regularities of quantitative distribution and the role of microorganisms in geochemical processes are under consideration. Geochemical studies highlight redox processes of the early stages of sediment diagenesis, alterations of interstitial waters, regularities of variations in chemical composition of iron-manganese nodules.

In:  Supplement to: Nemirovskaya, Inna A; Romankevich, Evgeny A (1992): Lipids in bottom sediments of the Atlantic sector of Antarctica. Oceanology, 32(5), 589-593
    Publication Date: 2023-05-12
Description: Distribution and composition of lipids and contents of alkanes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) in bottom sediments of the Scotia and Weddell seas are discussed. Comparatively low concentrations of organic carbon (average 0.35%) and lipids (average 0.024%) result from rapid decomposition of organic matter in upper layers of the water column. Composition of alkanes indicates that lipids are of autochthonous origin, and stable concentrations of PAHs (average 25.8 ppb, sigma 15.3 ppb) indicate that they represent the background level for bottom sediments. Higher concentrations of PAHs in sediments near the King George Island (252.1 ppb) and different distributions of individual polyarenes are produced there by the heating systems of the Polish Antarctic Station.
