Notes: Summary Rheological properties of Polypropylene/Polyamide-6 blends at different degrees of compatibilization were studied at 240°C. The compatibilizing agent was synthesized in situ during the mixing procedure. Creep measurements at constant stress levels were performed on a Rheometrics Stress Rheometer. The morphology of the blends was determined by scanning and transmission electron microscopy before and after the shear experiments. No changes of the morphology occurred during the experiments. In the creep experiments the flow zone was reached. Data of that region such as zero shear viscosity, creep compliance and terminal retardation time were determined. The values of these quantities increased with increasing amount of the compatibilizing agent.

Notes: Abstract Semi-IPN's based on linear poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene ether) (PPE) and diamine crosslinked poly(styrene-co-maleic anhydride) (PScoMA) copolymers containing small amounts of maleic anhydride (PSA=4.7wt.-% MA, PSB=5.8 wt-% MA) are studied with respect to the influence of cross-linking on the phase behavior. Temperature-dependent dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and DSC show that the semi-IPN's prepared from concentrated solution show weak crystallinity of the PPE phase. After heating above the PPE melting transition the semi-IPN's remain amorphous and the relaxation in the glass transition region as well as the terminal relaxation of the free PPE chains in the network is studied as a function of PPE concentration and network density.

Notes: Abstract The basic equations for measurement of solar diameters by means of the scanning heliometer are given, and the first processing of the rough data is described, either for oblateness evaluation, for medium term oscillations detection, or for investigation of secular diameter changes.

Notes: Abstract Recent solar observations at Pic du Midi are reported that yield a value of J 2=(2.57 ± 2.36) x 10−6 for the quadrupole moment of the Sun. These observations were conducted from July 1993 to July 1994 after several improvements of the scanning heliometer. This instrument operates by fast photoelectric scans of opposite limbs of the Sun quasi-simultaneously, which provides the distance between both inflection points of the limb profiles. Any number of solar diameters in any position angle can be measured within a time interval short enough to minimize the scattering of the observational parameters. Errors due to atmospheric deterioration are discussed. From our results, compared to previous values obtained by other authors, it can be concluded than an upper limit for J 2 is probably 1.0 × 10-5.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract A parameter characterizing the quality of photospheric images has been defined through a three class distribution; it has been estimated over various samples taken during 230 hours of observing time at the Pic du Midi Observatory. Its occurrence is compared to that of two types of atmospheric thermal disturbances, one being created by the local ground and the other brought along by the incident flow and due mainly to convection. The time-derivation of the temperature, which is, under some conditions, well related to the nearby thermal field, may be taken as a characteristic atmospheric parameter, and it is shown that the best quality for solar images occurs only - and then with a fairly good frequency - when its value is slightly positive. A method is described which aims at the detection of convection in the clear atmosphere; as the upward motions are bringing aerosols from the lower layers, a less transparent volume is ascending during the first part of the day and then, its top may intercept the optical axis of the telescope. The diurnal variation of the atmospheric transparency, as observed with a pyrheliometer, shows clearly this occurrence, which may be quite different from one day to another.

Notes: Abstract Because of the renewed attention now paid to the solar diameter, its variations from equator to pole, or its secular or long-period changes, the question: what is a solar diameter? is not meaningless. Two kinds of definitions may be given: either astrophysical, each one relating to a specific physical parameter, or observational, relating to a given quantity to be measured. Only the second kind is directly accessible, and astrophysical definitions should be linked to these quantities, once they are determined with the highest possible accuracy. In practice, all the programs under way refer to the point of the limb where the brightness gradient is maximum, or to a higher order approximation of the shape of the profile. Two of them are compared: the Pic-du-Midi experiment, using fast scans of the limb to define the inflection point after a correction for the blurring effect of the atmosphere, and the SCLERA experiment, using the algorithm called FFTD to eliminate this correction. The advantage of a fast scan is emphasized, and the remark is formulated that, once the signal is digitized and stored, FFTD or any processing of it can be performed. In collecting day-long one-limb scans to calibrate the blurring correction, the authors have found fluctuations of the maximum brightness gradient which provide a new entry to the field of solar oscillations.

Notes: Abstract For more than a decade, it has been suggested that the diameter of the Sun may vary in time. This not only concerns variations of the equatorial diameter, but also any other diameters. Thus the complete geometry of the Sun is may be not as ideal as a perfect sphere. The aim of this paper is to briefly review up to now the figure of the Sun, to deduce an upper bound to the solar oblateness (if any). To sum up over the last 15 years, the amplitude of the observed variations of the solar radius made at the Calern Observatory (France) does not exceed 0.7′ and has been probably less (0.3′) during the last five years. Recently, new measurements of the solar oblateness made at the Pic du Midi Observatory (France) seems to confirm a possible oscillation with the solar cycle, as previously conjectured by a Princeton group. Furthermore, an upper bound to the solar oblateness can be derived from the observations and compared with theoretical computations of the angular momentum of the Sun. Let us mention that between July 1993 and July 1994 the reported mean value difference between the equatorial radius and the polar one is 11.5 \± 3.4 arc ms, consistent with previous observations. Effects of the atmosphere are briefy discussed. Helioseismic measurements should eventually place useful limits on the strength and uniformity of the internal magnetic fields which may be responsible for the solar surface changes of different oscillation modes. A knowledge of the physical character of such an oscillation of the geometry of the Sun is still pending (rapidly rotating core?), as well as the question of this out-of-roundness of our nearby star.

Notes: Glass beads carrying different amounts of polystyrene (PS) grafted to their surface were prepared by solution and melt-mixing processes. These beads are mixed with a nearly mono-disperse PS. The morphology of polymers filled with different volume amounts, φ, of modified and unmodified glass beads was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In the case of PS-grafted glass beads, the fracture surfaces show cohesive failure. The rheological properties of these filled polymers were investigated by mechanical spectroscopy. The material functions, the storage modulus G″ and the loss modulus G″, for PS melts filled with unmodified beads can be presented in an invariant from, e.g., independent of temperature and concentration. The temperature-shift factors follow WLF behavior, and the concentration shift factors a generalized Maron Pierce equation. The rheological material functions of melts filled with modified glass beads can be superposed for different temperatures. However, a concentration invariant representation is only possible in the frequency range belonging to the plateau region. For small frequencies, a systematic deviation occurs whose strength depends on the amount of polymer grafted to the filler surface. It is argued that this behavior may be attributed to an additional relaxation process originating from the hindered flow of the modified glass beads. This process has to be investigated in more detail in the future. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
