    Notes: We have performed a comprehensive study of the electronic structure and magnetic properties of structurally characterized models for diiron-oxo proteins. Results from Kohn–Sham density functional theory show that two complexes, with formula Fe2(μ-O)(μ-O2CCH3)2(HBpz3)2 and [Fe2(μ-OH)(μ-O2CCH3)2(HBpz3)2]+, are strongly and weakly antiferromagnetically coupled, respectively, in agreement with experiment. The physical origin of the stronger and weaker exchange typically measured for oxo- and hydroxo-bridged diiron complexes, respectively, has been elucidated. The main superexchange pathways giving rise to molecular antiferromagnetism in both complexes have been identified. The dominant pathway in the oxo-bridged complex, Fe1(dxz):μ-O(px):Fe2(dxz), was formed by π interactions whereas that of the hydroxo-bridged, Fe1(dz2):μ-OH(p(parallel)):Fe2(dz2), was formed by σ interactions. We also found a pathway mediated by the bridging acetates, Fe1(dx2−y2):bis(μ-acetato):Fe2(dx2−y2), which induces weak antiferromagnetism in the oxo-bridged complex but is significantly more important in the hydroxo-bridged complex. The antiferromagnetic exchange constants that parameterize the Heisenberg Hamiltonian H=JS1⋅S2 have been predicted for both, strongly and weakly, coupled complexes. Overall, the signs, trends, and magnitudes of the theoretical values (Jμ-Ocalc=+152.7 cm−1, Jμ-OHcalc=+23.3 cm−1) were in excellent agreement with experiment. The geometries of the complete molecular structures have been optimized in C2v symmetry and used to calculate molecular properties such as atomic charges and spin densities. The electronic configurations (Fe:4s0.293d5.93,μ-O:2s1.922p4.99;Fe:4s0.303d5.82,μ-OH:2s1.822p5.25,H:1s0.51) of the respective binuclear cores revealed relatively high occupancies for the nominally ferric ions, thus reflecting a donating character of their immediate N3O3 coordination. In addition, the diiron-oxo protein hemerythrin has been discussed. Theoretical and structural considerations indicated that the oxo-bridged diferric complex considered herein models extremely well the antiferromagnetic behavior of azidomet- and azidometmyo-hemerythrin. Finally, the magnetic behavior of closely related oxo-bridged diferric and hydroxo-bridged diferrous complexes containing Me3TACN capping ligands has been explained in light of the results presented in this work. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to present a management tool that helps to achieve the objectives of the plan for info-tech systems and communications of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria for the 2003-2006 period. Design/methodology/approach - The methodology used in this case is nothing if not practical. The chosen tool involved university members who put it into practice and the results were observed. Findings - Finds that a practical instrument, which appeals to the users' real needs, can overcome their objections to change and their apprehension of technological innovation. Research limitations/implications - As in all individual case studies - and this is no exception - the methodology chosen circumscribes to some extent the research and its results, which therefore cannot be automatically applied generally elsewhere. Practical implications - Users' interests are paramount and preparation of the technology involved must be given the utmost attention over a considerable period of time. Originality/value - University members have here a user-friendly means of effecting e-administration simply and easily.

    Notes: Summary The nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) of acrocentric chromosomes in 70 normal East Indians were examined by Ag-staining (NSG) and acridine orange reverse banding (RFA) techniques. The Ag-stainability of NORs was variable from one individual to another but characteristics were constant within each individual. The average modal number of Agpositive NORs per individual was eight. A racial difference in the expression of NORs is suggested. to study the heteromorphism of NORs, the NSG technique was found to be more useful than RFA. Furthermore, it is concluded that there is no direct relationship between a heteromorphism of NORs identified by NSG and that identified by the RFA technique. Quantitative data on these differences is provided. In addition NOR-regions are classified into five sizes namely; very large, large, medium, small, and very small using subjectively defined criteria.

    Notes: Abstract A prototype dual-purpose expert system for automatic preliminary shape synthesis of structural components has been developed. The developed prototype is intended to emulate the conceptual-design/preliminary-redesign phases of the engineering design process. The dual purpose of this expert system is to generate preliminary designs which can be used either for basic engineering or as an initial solution to an optimization scheme. Both design phases have been modularized and developed under adequate computational shells. Heuristics are applied in the conceptual design phase to produce an initial definition of the geometric domain. A set of rules was programmed into the inference mechanism for the redesign phase. These rules focus on molding the geometric domain. Modules requiring heuristic support are implemented in a LISP/KEETM environment, those which are computer intensive being C subroutines. The two-dimensional problems of a fillet in a tension bar and of a connecting link are used to illustrate the system. This is part of an ongoing project at the Center for Computer Aids for Industrial Productivity (CAIP) in New Jersey.

    Notes: Summary The frequency of different types of satellite associations of nucleolar organizing human chromosomes (i.e. acrocentric chromosomes; 13, 14, 15, 21, and 22) is reported using 10 normal individuals by Ag-staining technique. The preferential involvement of acrocentric chromosomes in satellite association is suggested. Only acrocentric chromosomes with active NORs (i.e. Ag-stained) were found in association while unstained (inactive NORs) chromosomes were never seen in satellite association. In general as number of NORs expression increase, the frequency of association per cell was also increased. A possible mechanism and the clinical consequences of such an unusual phenophenon is described.

    Notes: Two experimental studies of the melt spinning of fibers have been carried out using low-density polyethylene and polystyrene. First, isothermal spinning experiments were carried out and the relationship between the fiber kinematics and drawdown force was studied. The data were correlated by using the following two methods: (1) the concept of a non-Newtonian elongational viscosity and (2) a nonlinear integral theory of viscoelastic fluids. In the second experiment, the spinline temperature profile of a monofilament fiber being pulled down from a spinneret through stagnant air was measured and the heat transfer coefficient computed. A correlation between the local Nusselt number and a fiber Reynolds number was obtained. An integral boundary layer analysis of forced convection heat transfer from a descending fiber was carried out.
