Chapter 5-A review of protected area effectiveness around the World: Methodological approach -- Chapter 6-Results on protected area effectiveness in developed countries -- Chapter 7-Results on protected area effectiveness in developing countries -- Chapter 8-Main methodological approaches to assessing effectiveness around the globe -- Chapter 9-Successes and failures: Lessons learned -- Chapter 10-Conclusions: The future of protected areas and biodiversity.
Abstract: This book addresses the effectiveness of existing protected areas at conserving the diversity of genes, species and ecosystems on land and at sea. The book synthetizes the main biodiversity conservation outcomes of protected areas in the 2010-2019 decade, drawing on a systematic literature review of scientific publications and case studies from around the world demonstrating successes and failures. It provides region-specific results for land and sea ecosystems as well as for developed and developing countries. It also reviews current methodological approaches used to assess protected area effectiveness. The work is timely, since there is growing concern on the global biodiversity crisis among researchers, government organizations and the general public, as demonstrated by the 2030 targets established by the UN Sustainable Development Goals for Life Below Water (SDG 14) and Life On land (SDG15). The book is written in an easy and enjoyable style using numerous pictures, tables and graphs to make the content more engaging and understandable. The main intended audiences of the book are academics, from post-graduate students to university lecturers, and senior researchers in the fields of biodiversity conservation, sustainable development and environmental policy, as well as protected area managers and practitioners.

Notes: [Auszug] Although iron is required to sustain life, its free concentration and metabolism have to be tightly regulated. This is achieved through a variety of iron-binding proteins including transferrin and ferritin. During infection, bacteria acquire much of their iron from the host by synthesizing ...

Notes: . Marteilia refringens is recognized as one of the most significant pathogens of bivalve molluscs. The nucleotide sequence of the small subunit ribosomal RNA gene of Marteilia refringens is used to elucidate the phylogenetic position of the phylum Paramyxea. Genomic DNA was extracted from sporangia of Marteilia, purified from infected blue mussels, Mytilus edulis, and flat oysters, Ostrea edulis. The sequences obtained from Marteilia species purified from both oysters and mussels were identical. The sequence identity was confirmed by in situ hybridization using a DNA probe targeted to a variable region of the ribosomal DNA. The small subunit ribosomal RNA gene sequence of M. refringens is very different from all known sequences of eukaryotic organisms, including those of myxosporeans and haplosporeans. Therefore, the phylum Paramyxea should continue to be recognized as an independent eukaryotic phylum.

Notes: Abstract A filtering unit was designed and constructed that concentrates and purifies torpedo-stage embryos, from carrot (Daucus carota L.) embryo suspensions. The filtering unit was composed of three sections, each containing a screen disk. Purification efficiency of a series of three screen size combinations was evaluated using 10 to 15 ml of 23- to 30-day-old embryo suspensions. Under optimal conditions where the first screen was a 1000 micron in size, 〉84% of the total number of torpedo embryos were concentrated in the purified fraction. Purified fractions contained more than double the percentage of torpedo embryos when compared to unfiltered suspensions. This filtering unit provided a simple method for concentrating and purifying torpedo embryos from a suspension.

Notes: Abstract Spectrum limitations are often a deterrent for swift growth of cellular radio systems. Therefore, different technologies have been explored to enhance the Radio Frequency (RF) capacity as well as to improve the communication quality. Recent technologies suggest the use of Discontinuous Transmission (DTX) as a mean to achieve these goals. In this paper, we analyze and quantify the performance improvement which result from implementing DTX in microcellular systems. The performance criteria is chosen to be the outage probability of de signal to interference ratio. Closed form expressions are derived for outage probabilities for systems using discontinuous transmission. Results are obtained for generalized Nakagami(n)/Nakagami(m) channels as well as for Ricean/Nakagami(m) environments. Moreover, since DTX effectiveness depend on voice patterns, modified expressions are developed for average outage probabilities which take into consideration different voice activity factors.

Description: In this work, 16 stations in Cienfuegos Bay were optically classified in the period from 2009 to 2014 and the spatio-temporal variation of the average attenuation coefficient of light was determined, as well as its relationship with chlorophyll a and suspended solids. The average attenuation coefficient was estimated from an empirical relationshipwith the Secchi depth and was compared with the corresponding ones determined by Jerlov (1976) to determine the optical type of water of each station. A predominance of C9 (more turbid) water was obtained, which was mainly reported in the mouths of the rivers, mainly in the northern lobe of the bay subjected to anthropization. The greatest variation of the attenuation was detected between the periods of drought and rain, showing the highest values in rain due to the increase of the nutrient concentration and the turbulence in the water column. The spatial variation indicated that stations 1 and 16 showed minimum and maximum attenuation values respectively due to their hydrodynamic characteristics. The relationship of the attenuation coefficient with suspended solids on the surface and in turn the attenuation coefficient with chlorophyll a showed a marked multifactorial relationship.

Description: Despite extensive knowledge on the mechanisms that drive single-cell migration, those governing the migration of cell clusters, as occurring during embryonic development and cancer metastasis, remain poorly understood. Here, we investigate the collective migration of cell on adhesive gels with variable rigidity, using 3D cellular aggregates as a model system. After initial adhesion to the substrate, aggregates spread by expanding outward a cell monolayer, whose dynamics is optimal in a narrow range of rigidities. Fast expansion gives rise to the accumulation of mechanical tension that leads to the rupture of cell–cell contacts and the nucleation of holes within the monolayer, which becomes unstable and undergoes dewetting like a liquid film. This leads to a symmetry breaking and causes the entire aggregate to move as a single entity. Varying the substrate rigidity modulates the extent of dewetting and induces different modes of aggregate motion: “giant keratocytes,” where the lamellipodium is a cell monolayer that expands at the front and retracts at the back; “penguins,” characterized by bipedal locomotion; and “running spheroids,” for nonspreading aggregates. We characterize these diverse modes of collective migration by quantifying the flows and forces that drive them, and we unveil the fundamental physical principles that govern these behaviors, which underscore the biological predisposition of living material to migrate, independent of length scale.
