Notes: Summary Nitrification inhibitors were applied to a field experiment on loamy sand soil each autumn for 4 years, immediately prior to sowing winter cereals. Laboratory experiments demonstrated that repeated application of the inhibitor dicyandiamide (DCD) to a soil had little effect either on the rate of DCD decomposition or the ability of DCD to inhibit nitrification. Repeated field application of the inhibitors DCD, nitrapyrin or etridiazole resulted in increased sensitivity of ammonium-oxidizing bacteria to nitrapyrin or etridiazole, but not to DCD. The rate of decomposition of etridiazole was unaffected by four annual applications of this inhibitor, but decomposition of nitrapyrin was somewhat slower in soil that had received nitrapyrin annually for 4 years than in soil that had never been treated with an inhibitor.

Notes: A three stage model for the adsorption of nonionic surfactants is proposed which makes use of existing theory from studies of random sequential adsorption. The model is simulated and the adsorption curves are found. The theory of random sequential adsorption is used to calculate the coverage exactly at the end of each of the three stages.

Notes: The effects of pH, light intensity, temperature, oxygen and dehydration on nitrogenase activity in the free-living and endophytic Nostoc sp. of Blasia are described. The endophyte exhibits greater nitrogenase activity at lower pH's than the free-living alga. Maximal activity in the free-living alga is attained at much lower light intensities than those required by the endophyte. Both algae have low activities below 10°C, the free-living alga showing high activity above 12°C and the endophyte above 17°C. Increasing pO2 levels cause a decrease in activity in both algae. The free-living alga is more tolerant to dehydration than the endophyte, although both algae are protected by mucilage. The results are discussed and possible benefits resulting from the symbiosis, with respect to nitrogen fixation rates, considered.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung In dieser Arbeit beschreiben wir rechnerische Erfahrungen bei der Lösung von unbeschränkten quadratischen Null-Eins-Problemen mit einem “Branch and Bound”-Algorithmus.
Notes: Abstract In this paper we describe computational experience in solving unconstrained quadratic zero-one problems using a branch and bound algorithm. The algorithm incorporates dynamic preprocessing techniques for forcing variables and heuristics to obtain good starting points. Computational results and comparisons with previous studies on several hundred test problems with dimensions up to 200 demonstrate the efficiency of our algorithm.

Notes: Summary Alpha-1-antitrypsin phenotypes were determined by isoelectric focusing in 270 Koreans and 52 Chinese. The frequencies of the major alleles were the following, numbers for the Chinese sample are in parentheses: PiM1: 0.65 (0.66), PiM2: 0.22 (0.25), PiM3: 0.06 (0.09). Other alleles, including PiZ were present in low frequencies. The Koreans appear to be quite similar to the Chinese in this system.

Notes: Abstract We study the eigenvalue distribution of large random matrices that are randomly diluted. We consider two random matrix ensembles that in the pure (nondilute) case have a limiting eigenvalue distribution with a singular component at the origin. These include the Wishart random matrix ensemble and Gaussian random matrices with correlated entries. Our results show that the singularity in the eigenvalue distribution is rather unstable under dilution and that even weak dilution destroys it.

Notes: Abstract Biologically active compounds may be liberated from blue-green algae growing on the surface of moist soils. Such compounds may also be released as exudates from algae grown in liquid culture. This report describes inoculation of soils in pots, containing radish or tomato plants, with algal suspensions or exudates, which resulted in increased growth rates of both plants and increased their overall yield. Autoclaved exudates were generally as effective as fresh exudates. Interaction of effects between the various active substances depends on the algal species and method by which the soils are amended.

Notes: Summary Nitrogenase activity in Nostoc crusts desiccated to below 10 per cent saturation for 24 hours and 7 days recovered on rewetting. Recovery over a 3 day period was greater in crusts returned to higher saturation levels. Possible reasons for, and limitations to, recovery are considered. re]19760420
