    Description: Vein smectites with large Rb/Sr enrichments from extensively altered basaltic oceanic crust in Deep Sea Drilling Project hole 417A in the western Atlantic define a highly constrained Rb/Sr isochron age of 108 +/- 3 m.y. This age is identical to a less well constrained age of 108 +/- 17 m.y. for vein smectites with lower Rb/Sr enrichments from adjacent hole 418A and to the 108 m.y. age of crust formation derived by paleontological and magnetic anomaly correlation. Reasonable agreement exists between the 87Sr/86Sr ratio of vein calcites from both sites and the seawater 87Sr/86Sr ratio at the time. Pervasive low-temperature alteration in the contrasting environments of sites 417 and 418 appears to be coeval and essentially coincident with basement formation. Alteration may be used to advantage in determining ages of old oceanic crust.

    Description: 87Sr/a6Sr ratios, Sr, K, Rb and Cs contents and the petrology of basalts and secondary phases recovered from deep basement drilling at DSDP Sites 332B, 417A, 417D and 418A show that the oceanic crust alters in four distinct stages characterized by formation of palagonite, smectite and calcite (Stages I, II and III, respectively). Stage IV represents the final compaction of the crust, including a dehydration of the crust without major chemical changes. Isotopic age determinations by Hart and Staudigel (1978, doi:10.1029/GL005i012p01009) and Richardson et al. (doi:10.1029/JB085iB12p07195), show that, at least for Atlantic-type crustal regimes, Stage I and II last for a maximum of 3 m.y., and Stage III lasts beyond Stage I and II, but is probably completed in significantly less than 10 m.y. Stage IV is long-lived and may still be active at 100 m.y. Stages I and II, the phase of halmyrolysis, include geochemically significant interactions between seawater and basalt for the upper 500 m of layer II and involve volumes of seawater containing a large basaltic component. Stage III solutions show evidence of less seawater-basalt interaction, at least to depths of 500 m; calcites deposited from these solutions have Sr isotopic ratios close to seawater values; but also have very low Sr/Ca ratios indicating a large basalt Ca component in the solutions. Smectite formation is the result of the interaction of seawater and basalt. The initial 87Sr/a6Sr ratios of smectites represent the Sr isotopic composition of the solution when the smectite is being formed. Thereafter, alkalies may be continuously added to interlayer positions in the smectite in order of decreasing hydration energy (Cs is more enriched than Rb, Rb more than K). The later-formed carbonates have very low alkali concentrations, and 87Sr/86Sr ratios identical to contemporaneous seawater. Therefore, since the alkali concentrations in a whole rock sample are affected by different alteration processes, the alkali concentrations alone are not reliable indicators of the degree of alteration.

    Description: Basement intersected in DSDP holes 525A, 528 and 527 on the Walvis Ridge consists of submarine basalt flows and pillows with minor intercalated sediments. These holes are situated on the crest and mid and lower northwest flank of a NNW-SSE-trending ridge block which would have closely paralleled the paleo mid-ocean ridge (Rabinowitz and LaBrecque, 1979 doi:10.1029/JB084iB11p05973, Moore et al. (1983 doi:10.1130/0016-7606(1983)94〈907:TWRTDS〉2.0.CO;2). The basalts were erupted approximately 70 m.y. ago, an age equivalent to that of immediately adjacent oceanic crust in the Angola Basin and coraistent with formation at the paleo mid-ocean ridge (Moore et al., 1983). The basalt types vary from aphyric quartz tholeiites on the ridge crest to highly plagioclase phyric olivine tholeiites on the ridge flank. These show systematic differences in incompatible trace element and isotopic composition. Many element and isotope ratio pairs form systematic trends with the ridge crest basalts at one end and the highly phyric ridge flank basalts at the other. The low 143Nd/144Nd (0.51238), 206Pb/204Pb (17.54), 207Pb/204Pb (15.47), 208Pb/204Pb (38.14) and high 87Sr/86Sr (0.70512) ratios of the ridge crest basalts suggest derivation from an old Nd/Sm-, Rb/Sr- and Pb/U-enriched mantle source. This isotopic signature is similar to that of alkaline basalts on Tristan da Cunha but offset to significantly lower Nd and Pb isotopic ratios. The isotopic ratio trends may be extrapolated beyond the ridge flank basalts with higher 143Nd/144Nd (0.51270), 206Pb/204Pb (18.32), 207Pb/204Pb (15.52), 208Pb/204Pb (38.77) and lower 87Sr/86Sr (0.70417) ratios in the direction of increasingly Nd/Sm-, Rb/Sr- and Pb/U-depleted source compositions. These isotopic correlations are equally consistent with mixing of depleted and enriched end member melts or partial melting of an inhomogeneous, variably enriched mantle source. However, observed Zr-Ba-Nb-Y interelement relationships are inconsistent with any simple two-component model of magma mixing, as might result from the rise of a lower mantle plume through the upper mantle. Incompatible element and Pb isotopic systematics also preclude extensive involvement of depleted (N-type) MORB material or its mantle sources. In our preferred petrogenetic model the Walvis Ridge basalts were derived by partial melting of mantle similar to an enriched (E-type) MORB source which had become heterogeneous on a small scale due to the introduction of small-volume melts and metasomatic fluids.

    Description: Five sites were drilled along a transect of the Walvis Ridge. The basement rocks range in age from 69 to 71 m.y., and the deeper sites are slightly younger, in agreement with the sea-floor-spreading magnetic lineations. Geophysical and petrological evidence indicates that the Walvis Ridge was formed at a mid-ocean ridge at anomalously shallow elevations. The basement complex, associated with the relatively smooth acoustic basement in the area, consists of pillowed basalt and massive flows alternating with nannofossil chalk and limestone that contain a significant volcanogenic component. Basalts are quartz tholeiites at the ridge crest and olivine tholeiites downslope. The sediment sections are dominated by carbonate oozes and chalks with volcanogenic material common in the lower parts of the sediment columns. The volcanogenic sediments probably were derived from sources on the Walvis Ridge. Paleodepth estimates based on the benthic fauna are consistent with a normal crustal-cooling rate of subsidence of the Walvis Ridge. The shoalest site in the transect sank below sea level in the late Paleocene, and benthic fauna suggest a rapid sea-level lowering in the mid-Oligocene. Average accumulation rates during the Cenozoic indicate three peaks in the rate of supply of carbonate to the sea floor, that is, early Pliocene, late middle Miocene, and late Paleocene to early Eocene. Carbonate accumulation rates for the rest of the Cenozoic averaged 1 g/cm**2/kyr. Dissolution had a marked effect on sediment accumulation in the deeper sites, particularly during the late Miocene, Oligocene, and middle to late Eocene. Changes in the rates of accumulation as a function of depth demonstrate that the upper part of the water column had a greater degree of undersaturation with respect to carbonate during times of high productivity. Even when the calcium carbonate compensation depth (CCD) was below 4400 m, a significant amount of carbonate was dissolved at the shallower sites. The flora and fauna of the Walvis Ridge are temperate in nature. Warmer-water faunas are found in the uppermost Maastrichtian and lower Eocene sediments, with cooler-water faunas present in the lower Paleocene, Oligocene, and middle Miocene. The boreal elements of the lower Pliocene are replaced by more temperate forms in the middle Pliocene. The Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary was recovered in four sites drilled, with the sediments containing well-preserved nannofossils but poorly preserved foraminifera.
