Abstract: This contributed volume discusses the most important physiological aspects of phosphate metabolism, and how its pathological dysregulation can induce organ damage, which includes but is not limited to blood vessels, kidney, bone and tumor. The editor has selected a varied group of world renowned experts to provide a basic understanding of normal phosphate regulation, to then move on to explain the complex molecular mechanisms of abnormal phosphate regulation, also shedding some light on the downstream clinical consequences owing to phosphate toxicity. Each chapter clearly presents the biochemically important problems related to phosphate dysregulation with the necessary illustrations. Readers will be able to use the proposed book as a quick reference for updated information on phosphate metabolism, ranging from cellular system to physiology, from pathology to toxicity, also including the associated clinical consequences, without much prior acquaintance with the field.

Notes: Abstract Genes involved in the immune response are generally encoded from a complex cluster of gene segments. Studies of the association of diseases with such genes require well-defined genetic markers throughout the selected region. A set of 15 polymorphic loci that span 1500 kb of the immunoglobulin heavy chain (IGH) complex, 8 in the variable (VH) region and 7 in the constant (CH) region, were selected for the study of disease association. We present a protocol for the use of multiple immunoglobulin heavy chain (IGH) polymorphisms for general application in disease association studies. No microsatellite repeat markers are available for this region. To demonstrate the applicability of this approach, we have examined these IGH polymorphisms in families with individuals affected with pemphigus vulgaris (PV), an autoimmune dermatologie disease. Allele frequencies in 12 patients with PV were compared with those found in their spouses, and with those in a white Canadian control population. A significant difference was found between PV patients and both control groups for the presence of the VH gene VH3f-R4, and possibly for the absence of VH3f-R3, suggesting the possibility of susceptibility factors in these regions. Examination of the frequencies of the IGH region Cγ-haplotypes of PV patients indicated that, while the patients did not differ significantly from their spouses (χ2=1.79), both groups were found to differ significantly from the white Canadian control group (χ2=10.10), emphasizing the importance of matching the ethnic background of controls with that of the patient test group in disease association studies. Unexpectedly, two patients had large deletions of genes in the IGH constant region, which could play a role in the development of PV and require further investigation.

Notes: Recent times have witnessed a heightened global interest in outsourcing of logistics functions. This is indicated by the volume of writings on the subject in various scholarly journals, trade publications and popular magazines. However, efforts to organize them in an integrated body of knowledge appear to be very limited. Keeping this in view, this paper makes an attempt to develop a comprehensive literature on outsourcing based on more than 100 published articles, papers and books on the subject.

Notes: Reports the findings of a cross-cultural survey on the skill requirements of senior-level logistics executives as perceived by the logistics practitioners themselves from two developing South-east Asian nations, namely, Singapore and Malaysia. The study reveals that in the sampled nations, logistics has emerged as a discipline by itself and that the logisticians in these countries are aware that to succeed as logistics executives in the complex business environment of today, they need to be multi-skilled generalists rather than technically-oriented specialists.

Notes: The current trend of changes in global business is highlighting the importance of logistics in the development of Third World business and industries. Literature reveals that many of these Third World nations lack logistics facilities; the task of developing a good logistics system in these nations is quite challenging. Attempts to understand these challenges by looking at Bangladesh, a new entrant from the Third World in the globalization race. Based on a survey of the country's logisticians, identifies five broad challenges facing logistics development in Bangladesh and proposes a schematic model that integrates efforts of, and inputs from, four sources to solve these problems. Argues that the proposed model is also adaptable in other developing nations.

Notes: Owing to the complexity of the task and the risks inherent in it, the effectiveness of any organizational buying decision largely depends on the information available for the decision-makers' use. Within any typical organization, flow of the information needed in the decision-making process is influenced by the gatekeepers - the people who link the organization with the outside environment. However, despite the important role played by these people, not much is known about their behavior. This research makes an attempt to study gatekeeping behavior and examine factors which may influence this behavior.
