Notes: The lattice dynamics and the temperature variation of the volume Grüneisen function and bulk modulus of erbium have been calculated with the nearest-neighbour central-interaction model of Srinivasan & Ramji Rao [Inelastic Scattering of Neutrons, IAEA, Vienna, (1965), 1, 325-342]. The even moments of the frequency distribution function of erbium have also been calculated. The agreement between the calculated in and that obtained from thermal data is good. The calculated Bs values agree with those obtained from the measured elastic constants of Fisher & Dever [Trans. Metall. Soc. A IME, (1967), 239, 48-57] at various temperatures up to 298 K, to within 2%.

Notes: The pulsed excimer laser ablation method is used to deposit both the buffer layer of Y-stabilized ZrO2 and the overlayer of Y1Ba2Cu3O7−x superconductor on (100) oriented single-crystal silicon. Process parameter optimization study is carried out and it is shown that a thin film of the superconductor (0.5–0.7 μm) having a zero resistance temperature of 86 K can be obtained using a 0.3 μm buffer layer deposited at substrate temperatures between 600 and 800 °C.

Notes: Summary A subset of world ocean monthly mean temperature climatology generated by Levitus and Boyer (1994), is utilised to describe the observed seasonal variability of the characteristics of the near-surface isothermal layer and thermocline for the entire tropical Indian Ocean (TIO). The most salient features of the observed annual cycle are described in terms of amplitude and phase of the annual and semi-annual frequencies employing Fourier analysis technique. On the annual mode, the near-surface isothermal layer depth (ILD), exhibits larger variability away from the equator with peak values in the northernmost Arabian Sea, the northernmost Bay of Bengal and the southern TIO, while on the semi-annual mode, it shows larger variability in the central Arabian Sea. The variability of the near-surface isothermal layer temperature (ILT), on the annual mode, is very weak in the warmpool region, and increases with latitude, while on the semi-annual mode, it shows larger variability in the northwestern Arabian Sea. The variability of 20°C isotherm topography (D20), on the annual mode, is weakest in the equatorial region and largest in the coastal regions of the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal and in the southern T10, while on the semi-annual mode, it is prominent in the eastern and western equatorial regions. The thermocline gradient (TG) is very sharp below the warmpool region and diffuses meridionally. On the annual mode, it shows larger variability in the southern TIO, off Somalia and northernmost Arabian Sea, while on the semiannual mode, it shows larger variability in the southwestern Arabian Sea and eastern equatorial Indian Ocean. The relationship between near-surface isothermal layer and thermocline characteristics over an annual cycle are explored through correlation analysis. The correlation between ILD and ILT is strong over much of the basin with the exception of the equatorial and coastal upwelling/downwelling zones where internal ocean dynamics are important. In the southern TIO, entrainment of colder waters appears to be important in maintaining the annual cycle of ILT as strong correlation is noticed between ILT and TG. In the Indo-Pacific throughflow region and another region west of it, the annual Rossby waves appear to control D20, as correlations between D20 and other fields are strong in these regions. A similar strong correlation between D20 and ILD is also noticed in the southeastern Arabian Sea where mode-2 Rossby waves identified in numerical model solutions.

Notes: Summary During the pre-onset regime of MONEX-79, the short period (1–2 weeks) time series measurements of surface meteorological elements, vertical profiles of temperature (BT) and salinity (Nansen casts) made from 5 former USSR and 2 Indian research vessels were utilised to investigate the observed near-surface heating rates at a few selected locations in the Arabian Sea. The influence of local surface heat fluxes on the upper ocean heat content variability is explored. The associated synoptic scale variability in the thermohaline structure of the upper layers is presented. The efficacy of a simple Kraus-Turner type one dimensional numerical model in simulating the observed variability of mixed layer heating rates is evaluated.

Notes: Abstract The complex formation of Eu(III) by bicarbonate/carbonate ions has been studied at 0.1 M ionic strength and 25°C using synergistic solvent extraction system of 1-nitroso-2-naphthol and 1,10-phenanthroline in chloroform. Concentrations of bicarbonate (5·10−3 to 1·10−1 M) and carbonate (5·10−4 to 1·10−2 M) ions in the aqueous phase have been varied in the pH range of 8.0 to 9.1 to simulate ground and natural water compositions. Under these conditions, the following species have been identified: Eu(HCO3)2+, Eu(HCO3)2 +, Eu(CO3)+ and Eu(CO3)2 −. Their conditional formation constants (log β) have been calculated as 4.77, 6.74, 6.92 and 10.42, respectively. These values suggest that the carbonate complexes of Eu(III) are highly stable.

Notes: Abstract Aerial application of the insecticide Nuvacron 40® (monocrotophos) had no significant effect on the cholinesterase level of plasma and erythrocytes of cattle, chicken, buffaloes, and human volunteers exposed to the spray. Contamination of canal water with the pesticide was completely eliminated within 24 hr, whereas that in the soil was reduced by 80% in 72 hr. The degradation of insecticide residue in grass was about 90% in seven days and in cotton leaves about 85% for the same period.

Notes: Summary The elimination of (14C)-DMN after i.p. injection intoXenopus was measured, as was the metabolism in vitro of (14C)-DMN by liver fromXenopus and 9 other amphibian species. In view of its rapid elimination from the body and low rate of metabolism byXenopus liver in vitro, DMN is unlikely to be toxic or carcinogenic inXenopus.

Notes: Summary Vanadium(IV) and (V) can be quantitatively extracted with 0.2 mol/l Amberlite LA-2 in xylene at pH 3.0 from 0.02 mol/l malonic acid, stripped with 0.5 mol/l hydrochloric acid, and determined spectrophotometrically. Five other liquid anion exchangers (Amberlite LA-1, Primene JM-T, Aliquat 336S, TOA and TIOA) were examined as possible extractants. The extraction of vanadium(IV) was found to be quantitative only with Amberlite LA-2, while that of vanadium(V) was quantitative with Amberlite LA-1 and LA-2, Primene JM-T and Aliquat 336S. Eight common solvents were tested as diluents; of these hexane, cyclohexane, benzene, and xylene were found to be satisfactory. Vanadium was separated from elements that do not form anionic complexes with malonic acid by selective extraction, from those that form weak complexes by washing the organic extract with water, and from metals that form strong malonato complexes by selective stripping with hydrochloric, nitric, or sulphuric acid. The method has been applied to the determination of vanadium in steel, coal fly ash and fuel oil. The precision of measurement is within ±5% and the detection limit of the method for vanadium is 0.5 mg/kg.

Notes: Abstract A preconcentration neutron activation analysis (PNAA) method involving reversed-phase extraction chromatography on 8-hydroxyquinoline-loaded Amberlite XAD-2 resin has been developed for the simultaneous determination of selected trace elements in acid rain and natural water samples. Quantitative retention has been achieved for Co, Cu, Hg, V and Zn at pH 6.0 and for Cd at pH 7.0. Various factors that can influence the preconcentration procedure have been studied in detail. Concentrations of the elements have been determined by the direct irradiation of the resin without eluting them from the column. Both precision and accuracy of the PNAA method are very good. The detection limits vary between 0.01 and 3 ppb.
