    Notes: Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) plants were grown in pots with 12.5 and 50 mg applied N kg−1 soil. With an increase of soil N, the Striga asiatica (L.) Kuntze infestation, as well as the sorghum shoot dry matter losses due to infestation, decreased. The relative differences in stimulant capacity to induce Striga seed germination among the four sorghum genotypes were not consistent over the 0 to 150 mg N 1−1 range. The sorghum root exudate was considerably more active at 0 mg N 1−1, than at 30 mg N 1−1, and the stimulant produced at 150 mg N 1−1 failed to induce Striga seed germination. Presence of N in the growth medium considerably reduced the effectiveness of the stimulating substance produced by sorghum roots, whereas K promoted stimulant activity only in the absence of N. The presence or absence of P in the growth medium did not affect Striga seed germinability, probably due to the inability of this element to interfere with the production or activity of the stimulating substance from the host plants. It can be concluded, therefore, that sorghum plants seem to produce active root exudate only in conditions of N deficiency.

    Notes: Abstract Steady state level density of 20 levels of boron-like ions, Mg viii and Si x, have been computed as a function of electron density and temperature. We have accounted for collisional and spontaneous radiative processes. Photo-excitation between the two levels of the ground term has also been considered. Using the computed level density, line intensities have been obtained as a function of electron density and temperature. In case of Mg viii, line intensity ratio I(430.47)/I(436.62) is found to be electron density sensitive. Likewise other pairs of lines namely, I(75.03)/I(74.86), I(315.02)/I(430.47), and I(315.02)/I(335.23) are also found to be density sensitive. Similar density sensitive line intensity ratios have been found for Si x. Absolute line fluxes from these ions at earth distance have been computed and are found to be comparable with values obtained, using various satellite and rocket measurements.

    Notes: Abstract Assuming steady state conditions, we calculated the occupation of 20 levels of the ion Six as a function of the electron density and temperature taking into account collisional processes and spontaneous radiative ones. Between the two levels of the ground state also the photo-absorption of the corresponding infrared radiation has been considered. The emission of the most important UV-, X- and IR-lines is determined as a function of the electron density and temperature. Intensity ratios are plotted versus electron density. The line emission as a function of the height of the radiating layers is studied for UV- and X-ray lines. The resulting fluxes in earth distance are compared with observations.

    Notes: Abstract Observations of UV-line intensities referring to the whole undisturbed Sun are used to investigate the chromosphere-corona transition region. For the evaluation of the integral representing the theoretical line intensities it appears to be an improvement to consider not the temperature gradient but the conductive flux to be nearly constant in the line-forming region. The variation of conductive flux with temperature calculated in this way is indeed small. Moreover, in the conductive flux versus temperature diagram the scatter of points is found to be less with coronal values of relative abundances than with photospheric ones. The results are used for determining the temperature structure of the transition region.

    Notes: Abstract Line intensity ratios of NeVI lines with respect to a resonance line of MgVI have been considered for electron density and temperature determinations within the chromosphere-corona transition region. The electron pressure within the transition region has been assumed to be constant. In addition, these ratios would enable us to estimate the relative element abundances of neon to magnesium. An attempt has been made to explain the extreme ultraviolet intensities of NeVI and MgVI lines as observed by ATM ultraviolet spectrometer. The observed intensities correspond to the average quiet-Sun conditions near solar minimum. Theoretical intensities for NeVI and MgVI lines have been computed using a model solar atmosphere. Theoretical intensities obtained by using the values 3.98 × 10−5 and 3.16 × 10−5 for element abundance of Ne and Mg, respectively, seem to agree well with the expected intensities. The agreement between some of the expected and computed intensities suggests the need for future observations at higher spectral resolutions to resolve difficulties arising out of blending due to two or more lines.

    Notes: Abstract Fluxes have been computed for Fex (6374 Å) and Fe xiv (5303 Å) lines as a function of solar radii and at various coronal tempratures. The electron density derived from the white light corona during the total solar eclipse of 1980 were used in the computations. Fluxes in adjacent continua have also been computed. The computed ratios of line flux to the square of continuum flux at a coronal temperature of 1.6 × 106 K show a good fit with the observed values for Fex line. Further, radiative excitation seems to dominate over collisional excitation beyond 1.3 solar radius.

The following physical processes have been considered: collisional excitations and spontaneous radiative de-excitations for permitted and intercombination transitions; collisional excitations and de-excitations, photo-excitations and spontaneous radiative transitions among the five levels of the ground term. This study indicates that line intensity ratios for oxygen-like ions can be used as a diagnostic in the determination of these two parameters of the solar plasma.

    Notes: Abstract Based on the recently found closed-form expressions of the Boltzmann collision integrals in a rigid-sphere gas for multi-Maxwellian distributions, a few typical sets of contour surfaces of the integrals in the space of molecular velocities are presented. These show graphically the tendency toward equilibrium under the influence of collisions. A brief preliminary comparison with Monte Carlo results is also given.
