Donnelly Spatially resolved trace rare gases optical emission spectroscopy was used to analyze the electron energy-distribution function (EEDF) in low-pressure argon plasma columns sustained by surface waves. At frequencies 〉1 GHz, in the microwave-sustained region, the EEDF departs from a Maxwellian, cha... [Phys. Rev. E 86, 015402] Published Thu Jul 19, 2012

Description: Although coagulation factors play a role in host defense for "living fossils" such as horseshoe crabs, the role of the coagulation system in immunity in higher organisms remains unclear. We modeled the interface of human species C adenovirus (HAdv) interaction with coagulation factor X (FX) and introduced a mutation that abrogated formation of the HAdv-FX complex. In vivo genome-wide transcriptional profiling revealed that FX-binding-ablated virus failed to activate a distinct network of nuclear factor kappaB-dependent early-response genes that are activated by HAdv-FX complex downstream of TLR4/MyD88/TRIF/TRAF6 signaling. Our study implicates host factor "decoration" of the virus as a mechanism to trigger an innate immune sensor that responds to a misplacement of coagulation FX from the blood into intracellular macrophage compartments upon virus entry into the cell.〈br /〉〈br /〉〈a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4762479/" target="_blank"〉〈img src="https://static.pubmed.gov/portal/portal3rc.fcgi/4089621/img/3977009" border="0"〉〈/a〉   〈a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4762479/" target="_blank"〉This paper as free author manuscript - peer-reviewed and accepted for publication〈/a〉〈br /〉〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Doronin, Konstantin -- Flatt, Justin W -- Di Paolo, Nelson C -- Khare, Reeti -- Kalyuzhniy, Oleksandr -- Acchione, Mauro -- Sumida, John P -- Ohto, Umeharu -- Shimizu, Toshiyuki -- Akashi-Takamura, Sachiko -- Miyake, Kensuke -- MacDonald, James W -- Bammler, Theo K -- Beyer, Richard P -- Farin, Frederico M -- Stewart, Phoebe L -- Shayakhmetov, Dmitry M -- AI065429/AI/NIAID NIH HHS/ -- CA141439/CA/NCI NIH HHS/ -- P30ES07033/ES/NIEHS NIH HHS/ -- R01 AI065429/AI/NIAID NIH HHS/ -- R01 CA141439/CA/NCI NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2012 Nov 9;338(6108):795-8. doi: 10.1126/science.1226625.
Notes: Summary An experimental study of ultrasonic absorption and velocity has been made in the cholesteric liquid crystals, viz. cholesteryl stearate, cholesteryl laurate and cholesteryl propionate, as a function of temperature, especially near the transition temperature. The absorption has been measured by using the pulse technique and the velocity with the help of an acoustic interferometer both at the single frequency of 2 MHz. The temperature has been controlled to within ±0.2°C with the help of an ultrathermostat. Abrupt increase in absorption and decrease in velocity have been observed beyond the isotropic-cholesteric transition temperature and the results are discussed qualitatively.

Notes: A different type of longitudinal CO2 laser is developed with multisegment hollow cathode discharge that sustains at low voltages. Operation of this laser is investigated with a 400-V peak ac source obtained directly from a three-phase line using inductive ballasts. Output laser pulses of 2 ms FWHM, 3-W peak power and repetition frequency of 100 Hz are obtained from an active length of about 45 cm at an operating pressure of 12 mbar (CO2:N2:He=1:1:10). The specific output power can be increased by improving cooling of the active medium.

Notes: We have examined the limitations on selectivity of thin dopant-selective and band-gap-selective etch-stop layers in the photoelectrochemical (PEC) etch process. The ultimate selectivity of one layer from an underlying layer is affected not only by differences in material composition, but also by the sequencing of the layers within the structure which will determine the distribution of the photogenerated carriers. Three semiconductor structures with variations in both doping and band gap were etched to demonstrate this effect. A He-Ne laser (633 nm) and a tunable Ti/sapphire laser (690–830 nm) were used as light sources and a (1:20) HCl:H2O solution was the electrolyte.

Notes: A 200 μm high-pass filter has been fabricated using the photoelectrochemical (PEC) etch process to form a series of waveguides through a Si-doped n+ GaAs (1×1018 cm−3) substrate. A metal mask on the sample surface with 100 μm square openings and 41 μm spaces was used to locally prevent PEC etching. The sample was etched in a (4:1:50) HCl:HNO3:H2O electrolyte for 1.5 h using an argon ion laser (514 nm) at an intensity of 0.7 W/cm2, and an applied bias of 0.35 V. The result was a series of highly anisotropic waveguides with a (3:1) aspect ratio. The transmittance curve had a cutoff of 45 cm−1 and a transmittance of 20% just above the cutoff.
