Notes: Over the last decade the dipole-flow test (DFT) evolved from the general idea of using recirculatory flow to evaluate aquifer properties, to the development of prototype instrumentation and feasibility studies, to a reliable tool for characterization of aquifer heterogeneity. The DFT involves the interpretation of head in recirculatory flow between injection and extraction sections (chambers) in a single well isolated from each other by a multipacker system. In this study, the steady-state dipole flow test (DFT) has been used to characterize the statistics of horizontal hydraulic conductivity (Kr) of the highly permeable, heterogeneous, and thin aquifer at the Horkheimer Insel site, Germany. In previous studies, Kr estimates were based on the steady-state head difference between chambers. A new by-chamber interpretation is proposed that is based on drawdown within each individual chamber. This interpretation yields more detailed information on structure of heterogeneity of the aquifer without introducing complexity into the analysis. The DFT results indicate that Kr ranges from 49 to 6000 m/day (mean In Kr [(m/s)]∼—4, and variance of In Kr [(m/s)] ∼ 1–2). Descriptive statistics from the DFT compare well with those from previous field and laboratory tests (pumping, borehole flowmeter, and permeameter tests and grain-size analysis) at this site. It is shown that the role of confining boundaries in the DFT interpretation is negligible even in this case of a thin (〈 4 m thick) aquifer. This study demonstrates the flexibility of the DFT and expands the potential application of this method to a wide range of hydrogeologic settings.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract A new investigation method for the integral assessment of the contaminant mass flux downstream of a waste site was presented in the first paper ( Teutsch et al. 2000). This second paper presents the first practical application of the new investigationmethod at an abandoned landfill site. The focus was on the extended, differential measuring approach, which yields, besides the total contaminant mass fluxes and mean concentrations, also the contaminant concentration distibution over a control plane perpendicular to the groundwater flow. In addition to testing of the technical and interpretation approaches it was an aim to demonstrage that the new investigation method is applicable also at low levels of contamination. Furthermore the maximum spatial resolution of the concentration distribution was to be determined.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract A new investigation method was developed for a highly reliable assessment of groundwater contamination at waste sites or industrial locations. The method is based on an integral estimation of contaminant mass fluxes downstream of a pollutant source zone, employing an inversion of contaminant concentration time series measured within the discharge of pumping wells. Depending on the setup, the application of the method yields the total mass flux, as well as the contaminant concentration distribution over a control plane within a contaminant plume (see Ptak et al. 2000). Since there is no need to interpolate point scale concentration measurements, site assessment at a high level of certainty is obtained. The method was tested within a demonstration project and applied under conditions of practice for site assessment within a large (urban) industrialized area in the city of Stuttgart.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract In heterogeneous aquifers, predictions of contaminant transport require detailed knowledge of aquifer parameters and their spatial distribution. In most cases this information cannot easily be obtained at acceptable expenses. In general, subsurface investigation techniques are applied only at borehole locations, and the parameter values measured need to be regionalized in order to obtain continuous parameter fields. In such situations particularly forced gradient tracer tests offer the possibility to quickly and efficiently investigate the aquifer between the wells and to characterize the relevant aquifer properties based on effective parameters values. If, in addition, reactive tracers are used in the experiments, it is possible to investigate both the hydraulic and hydrogeochemical aquifer properties. This paper presents some selected tracer testing methods and gives examples of application at field scale.
Hier bieten v. a.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract A former gasification plant with a variety of organic contaminants within the aquifer serves as a field test site. Both contaminants in phase (contamination source) and dissolved (contaminant plume) can be detected. After extending the test site infrastructure various methods for the investigation of groundwater flow and transport have been applied and compared. The geometry of the aquifer is variable and a pronounced heterogeneity of the hydraulic conductivity can be observed. The influence of the sedimentary setting on the structure of the aquifer is shown. A relation between discrete grain size distributions and the petrographical composition of the aquifer material is established. Using this relation, the sorption properties of the aquifer can be derived. Following the first measurements, the observed differential spreading of pollutants within the contaminant plume is influenced by microbial degradation. Further field tests to investigate the biodegradation rates are proposed.
