Notes: The influence of monosodium glutamate (MSG) and lamb on characteristics of restructured mutton roasts was evaluated. The status of pyridinoline (a trivalent collagen cross-link) in epimysial and muscle tissues of lambs and ewes was also investigated. Addition of MSG (0.2%) did not significantly alter restructured mutton roast flavor. Restructured roasts made with mutton had higher (P〈0.05) cook losses and Warner-Bratzler shear values, and inferior binding characteristics when compared to roasts made with lamb, and roast characteristics improved linearly with increasing levels of lamb. Pyridinoline content was higher in mutton than lamb. The greater amounts of pyridinoline may be partially responsible for the lower quality restructured mutton roasts.

Notes: Summary TOVS temperature profile data (SATEM) at its full resolution (85 km) has now become available in India on experimental basis. An attempt is made in this study to examine the quality and impact of this on the medium range forecasts over India and neighbourhood. For this purpose, a seven day period starting from 15 March 1996 is chosen to study the impact of the data on the global analysis-forecasting system operational in India. Though one week data is utilized for the impact study, the complete data of march 1996 is used for examining quality, representativeness and consistency of the retrievals. In the operational system of the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF), all types of data, including coarse resolution (500 km) global TOVS retrievals-coarse grid SATEM (CGS) data, received on GTS at hourly intervals are used in the assimilation cycle. For the present study the assimilation cycle is repeated for the above period by including high resolution data over the geographical regions covered by the New Delhi's high resolution picture transmission (HRPT) station and simultaneously removing coarse resolution SATEM data. The analysis and forecast fields thus generated are compared with the corresponding operational archives. The impact of the data is examined in terms of various objective scores and through circulation characteristics. The study reveals that the quality of high resolution SATEM (HRS) data is satisfactory and is such that it can be utilized in the global data assimilation system on real-time basis. A general improvement in the RMSE and ACC scores of the medium range forecasts is found over the data void equatorial sectors of the Indian Ocean after the incorporation of the HRS data fields in the assimilation cycle. With regard to a typical easterly wave activity of moderate intensity during the period of experimentation a marginal modulation in low level vorticity and divergence forecasts is found to be improving the precipitation magnitudes over the south peninsular India as well.

Notes: Abstract The authors prove that in the space of nonsingular transformations of a Lebesgue probability space the type III1 ergodic transformations form a denseG δ set with respect to the coarse topology. They also prove that for any locally compact second countable abelian groupH, and any ergodic type III transformationT, it is generic in the space ofH-valued cocycles for the integer action given byT that the skew product ofT with the cocycle is orbit equivalent toT. Similar results are given for ergodic measure-preserving transformations as well.

Notes: Abstract In the pursuit of newer materials, this paper deals with the characterization of midribs of coconut leaves which form one of the renewable resources of many tropical countries which cultivate coconut trees. The density, chemical constituents and mechanical properties of these midribs are evaluated before and after subjecting them to natural weathering conditions. It is found that cellulose and lignin vary from about 30 and 16% before subjecting to weathering to about 27 and 32%, respectively, after exposure to weathering for 2 years. Alternate wet and dry conditions for 25 cycles result in a decrease of the breaking load of the midrib from 747 to 620 N. These observed properties along with the fracture mechanisms in the midrib are explained on the basis of its structural parameters studied using optical and scanning electron microscopy.

Notes: Abstract The high temperature ductility of copper-chromium alloys has been examined in the temperature range of 25–700°C. Copper-chromium alloys exhibit severe intermediate temperature loss in ductility. The loss in ductility is associated with the ingress of sulphur along the grain boundaries under the influence of tensile stress, followed by decohesion of grain boundaries. Integranular facets of the fracture surface exhibit striations, indicative of quasi-static, step-wise crack growth process.

Notes: A series of reactions are presented which allowed us to crosslink polydiacetylenes containing carbamate groups in the side chain without attacking the triple bond. These reactions involved syntheses of carbamates and allophanates from butyl alcohol and phenyl isocyanate with metal and tertiary amine catalysts using a model compound, 2,4,7,9-tetramethyl-5-decyn-4,7-diol. Elemental analysis, IR and UV spectroscopy, and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) were used as analytical tools. Metal catalysts were found to favor the formation of allophanates in higher yields and purity as compared to tertiary amine catalysts.

Notes: The synthesis of crosslinked polydiacetylenes and its two-component interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) was carried out utilizing its polar and flexible substituent groups. Polydiacetylenes were crosslinked by the formation of allophanate linkages utilizing urethane groups in the substituent groups of the polydiacetylenes. Elemental analysis, DSC, TMA, solvent resistance, and IR spectra are presented as evidence for the formation of crosslinked polydiacetylenes. IPNs of polydiacetylenes and an epoxy resin (diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A) were synthesized by using simultaneous and sequential methods of synthesis. A study of phase morphology of the simultaneous and sequential IPNs was carried out using electron microscopy, TMA, and DSC.

Notes: Phosphorylated cardanol prepolymers (PCP) are obtained by simultaneous phosphorylation and oligomerization of cardanol, an unsaturated pentadecylphenol extracted from the nuts of the plant Anacardium occidentale L. Although GPC showed the presence of only oligomeric species in the system, the high viscosity of 0.35-0.45 million cps was found to be due to involvement of hydrogen bonding. IR spectra of PCP gave bands at 1030 and 1240 cm-1, indicating P - O - C linkages. The decrease in iodine value and the absence of vinyl IR bands at 895 and 907 cm-1 indicated oligomerization. NMR spectra of PCP showed partial loss of unsaturation. A carbonium ion initiated mechanism is indicated for the oligomerization. PCP was found to be highly reactive with aldehydes, amines, and isocyanates. Highly insoluble and infusible thermoset products could be obtained. TGA studies showed a two-stage decomposition with improved thermal stability above 500°C for PCP compared to cardanol-formaldehyde (novolac)-type resins. Completely cured PCP was highly resistant to hydrolysis by water. Studies on mechanical properties showed that the PCP cured with HMTA gave a tensile strength of 16.9-21.5 MN/m2 and an impact strength of 1.63-2.04 J. compared to 24-48 MN/m2 and 1.35 J, respectively, for phenol formaldehyde (novolac) resin prepared under similar conditions. The lap shear strength of PCP-bonded wood pieces showed a value of 400 ± 10 N/cm2 in comparison to 60 ± 10 N/cm2 of cardanol formaldehyde (novolac) resin, indicating that phosphorylation improves the bonding characteristics. With a phosphorus content of 7.9%, PCP showed good fire-retardant properties. Vertical burning studies did not show any propagation of fire or any afterglow. PCP cured with HMTA gave a limiting oxygen index value of 35, which on bromination increased to 42.0. PCP could find application as polymeric fire-retardant additive for plastics and elastomers or as filled or unfilled fire-resistant plastics/composite products.

Notes: The synthesis of crosslinked polydiacetylene [poly4ECMU (a polydiacetylene with ethoxy carbonyl methylene urethane substitution): where R = —(CH2)4OCONHCH2COOCH2CH3] was carried out utilizing its polar and flexible substituent groups. Polydiacetylene was crosslinked by the formation of allophanate linkages utilizing urethane groups in the substituent groups of the polydiacetylene. Two-component IPNs of polydiacetylene [poly4BCMU (a polydiacetylene with butoxy carbonyl methylene urethane substitution): where R = —(CH2)4OCONHCH2COO(CH2)3CH3] and an epoxy resin (diglycidyl ether of Bisphenol A) were synthesized. Two-component IPNs of poly4ECMU with the above epoxy resin were also synthesized. For the first time, two-component stiff-backbone IPNs of two different kinds of polydiacetylene (poly4BCMU and polyECMU) and a three-component IPN of poly4BCMU, poly4ECMU, and the epoxy resin were synthesized. IPNs with fewer allophanate linkages were also made in order to examine morphological differences between them. The glass transition behavior of these networks was studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) by means of a Rheovibron.

Notes: Processability characteristics of ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymer formulations modified with a flame-retardant 3-(tetrabromopentadecyl) 2,4,6-tribromo phenol (TBPTP) have been studied on a Brabender Plasticorder at various shear rates and temperatures. The plasticizing effect of TBPTP on EVA has been confirmed by the increase in flow behavior index and decreases in melt viscosity, melt elasticity, and activation energy of melt flow. The improvement in processability of the TBPTP-modified EVA over the unmodified sample was reflected in a reduction in power consumption during mixing of the former. The study was undertaken because of the potential of TBPTP-modified EVA for application in flame retardant low smoke (FRLS) cable sheathings. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
