    Description: We use InSAR and body-wave seismology to determine independent source parameters for the 6th April 2009 Mw 6.3 L’Aquila earthquake and confirm that the earthquake ruptured a SW-dipping normal fault with 0.6–0.8 m slip. The causative Paganica fault had been neglected relative to other nearby range-frontal faults, partly because it has a subdued geomorphological expression in comparison with these faults. The L’Aquila earthquake occurred in an area with a marked seismic deficit relative to geodetically determined strain accumulation. We use our source model to calculate stress changes on nearby faults produced by the L’Aquila earthquake and we find that several of these faults have been brought closer to failure.

    Notes: Summary The effects of verapamil and bendrofluazide used singly and in combination were examined in patients with primary hypertension in a patient blind, partly observer blind placebo controlled study of parallel group design; there were ten subjects in each arm of the trial. Verapamil 160 mg twice daily caused supine mean arterial pressure to fall by 21 mm Hg; this reduction was significantly greater (p〈0.05) than that induced by bendrofluazide 5 mg daily which caused a fall of only 10 mm Hg. The addition of verapamil 160 mg twice daily to bendrofluazide 5 mg daily caused a further fall in pressure of 18 mm Hg (p〈0.005), but the reduction in pressure when bendrofluazide was added to verapamil was only 1 mm Hg and not significant. Bendrofluazide therapy caused a fall in plasma potassium concentration and an increase in plasma urate concentration; urinary calcium excretion was reduced. Verapamil caused no detectable biochemical alterations in plasma or urine.

    Notes: The transient fields from a finite horizontal loop excited by a half sine wave current pulse have been computed numerically for a particular source receiver configuration at a height of 100 meters above a layered ground. The amplitude of the vertical component of the magnetic field has been chosen for the interpretation. Curves of apparent conductivity vs. time, plotted during the off-time of the signal, show that layering is easily resolved, that resonance effects are present and that polarization effects are detectable for certain types of polarization.

    Notes: The hydrodynamic transport properties of hard-sphere dispersions are calculated for volume fractions (φ) spanning the dilute limit up to the fluid–solid transition at φ=0.49. Particle distributions are generated by a Monte Carlo technique and the hydrodynamic interactions are calculated by Stokesian dynamics simulation. The effects of changing the number of particles in the simulation cell are investigated, and the scaling laws for the finite-size effects are determined. The effects of using various levels of approximation in computing both the far- and near-field hydrodynamic interactions are also examined. The transport properties associated with porous media—permeabilities and hindered diffusion coefficients—are determined here. The corresponding properties of freely mobile suspensions are determined in a companion paper [Phys. Fluids 31, xxxx (1988)].

    Notes: Abstract To investigate the role that the individual subunits play in the ATP-dependent helicase activity of the RecBCD protein we have investigated the ability of the RecB, RecC and RecD proteins to displace various 20-mer oligonucleotides annealed to either end or to the centre of an oligonucleotide 60 bases long. The results show that the only subunit which can displace the 20-mers in the absence of the other subunits is the RecB protein. Moreover, the 20-mer is displaced only if it is annealed to the 60-mer at the 5′ end or the middle, suggesting that the RecB protein translocates along the 60-mer in the 3′ to 5′ direction, displacing annealed 20-mers as it proceeds. We have shown that reconstituted RecBC and RecBCD complexes displace the 20-mers but, unlike RecB, they do not require a 3′-ended single-stranded region for helicase action, but can displace the 20-mers from either end of the 60-mer. The level of helicase activity of the RecBC complex is considerably greater than that of RecB alone, and the activity of the RecBCD complex appears to be greater still. This hierarchy of activity is also shown by DNA binding studies, but is not reflected in the ATPase activities of the enzymes. We have also shown that the ability of trypsin to cleave various sites on the RecB molecule is modified by the presence of ATP or ATP-γ-S, suggesting that conformational changes may be induced in RecB upon ATP binding. We discuss a model for the ATP-driven, unidirectional motion of the RecB translocase along single-stranded DNA. In this model, the RecB molecule binds to single-stranded DNA and then translocates along it, one base at a time, in the 3′ to 5′ direction, by a `ratchet' mechanism in which repeated stretching and contraction of the protein is coupled to ATP hydrolysis. The RecC protein in the RecBC complex is proposed to act as a `sliding clamp' which increases processivity by preventing dissociation.

    Notes: Summary X-linked dominant chondrodysplasia punctata is a human gene defect characterized by punctate foci of epiphyseal calcification, cataracts, ichthyosis, and systematized atrophoderma. In a comparative study, the murine X-linked mutant ‘bare patches’ was found to display strikingly similar skeletal, ocular, and cutancous anomalies. The human as well as the murine phenotypes occur exclusively in the female sex, apparently because the underlying mutations are lethal for male embryos. In both traits, the cutaneous lesions are arranged in a linear and blotchy pattern reflecting lyonization. The observed similarities constitute strong evidence that the two genes are homologous. The proposed homology is a further example of the evolutionary conservatism of the X-chromosome in mammals.
