    Notes: Abstract The effect of red light and far-red light on the appearance of mRNA for the small and large subunit of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase in rye seedlings has been analysed. Irradiation of etiolated seedlings with a pulse of red light increased the mRNA level of the small subunit by a factor of 7–10 and that of the large subunit by a factor of 3. A pulse of far-red light resulted in a much lower, but measurable increase. The effect of red light is reverted by an immediate far-red pulse, demonstrating the classical phytochrome response.In vitro transcription experiments with nuclei isolated from red light-treated seedlings showed that the transcription rate of the small subunit mRNA was increased only by a factor of 1.5–2.5, indicating posttranscriptional as wells as transcriptional regulations of the small subunit of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase.

    Notes: Abstract Rattling in gears is a consequence of backlashes. It can be generated in those gear-wheels of a car transmission system, which are not under load. Models of rattling are established in three stages. from a straightforward patching method we proceed to a discrete mapping description and to a stochastic model applying the well-known Fokker-Planck equation. All three model stages are consistent and, moreover, they represent a good picture of the real world, which has been proven by tests.

    Notes: Abstract In the following a percussion drilling machine is examined as an example for mechanical systems with unilateral contacts. It is characteristic for such systems that the number of degrees of freedom changes during motion. To avoid a description of each possible system state using different sets of minimal coordinates, the constrained motion is taken into account by algebraic relations. This method has the advantage that the motion of the system and simultaneously the constraint forces are available, which is necessary to obtain conditions for a change in the state of the system. Furthermore different combinations of constraints can be easily taken into consideration in this way.

    Notes: Abstract An impact model for two-dimensional contact situations is developed which contains the main physical effects of a compliance element in the normal direction and a series of a compliance and Coulomb friction elements in the tangential direction. For systems with multiple impacts a unilateral formulation based on Poisson's hypothesis is used to describe the impulses which are transferred in the normal direction. The event of an impact is divided into two phases. The phase of compression ends with vanishing approaching velocity if normal impulses are transferred and is equivalent to a completely inelastic collision. The phase of expansion allows the bodies to separate under the action of the normal impulses whenever they are large enough. The absolute values of the tangential impulses are bounded by the magnitudes of the normal impulses, due to the Coulomb friction relationship on the impulse level. One part of the transferred tangential impulse during compression is assumed to be partly reversible which may be regarded as an application of Poisson's law. The remaining part is completely irreversible and considered friction. This formulation contains the special case of completely elastic tangential impacts as well as the situation when only Coulomb friction acts. It is proven that the presented impact model is always dissipative or energy preserving. The evaluation of the problem is done by solving one set of complementarity conditions during compression and a nearly identical set of equations during expansion. The theory is applied to some basic examples which demonstrate the difference between Newton's and Poisson's hypotheses.

    Notes: Abstract Rattling vibrations in gear boxes are a noise problem of modern cars following the requirement to be as quiet as possible. The paper presents an uniform approach to model such vibrations based on classical impact theory and applying modern methods of topological dynamics.     Notes: Abstract The gears of driveline systems in diesel engines must be designed with large backlashes within the gear meshes due to the large temperature operating range of such systems. This leads to hammering processes with extremely high overloads where hammering is an impulsive separation process of the tooth flanks caused by the large torques as generated by the injection pumps. This paper presents a theoretical model for such processes and gives a comparison with measurements.

    Notes: Abstract In recent years, a topological method has been established by several authors for the evaluation of time-optimal trajectories for manipulators with tree-like structures and without forces at the gripper, i.e. for free trajectories. In the following, we extend this method to the case of an arbitrary force vector at the robot's hand, which corresponds to some path in contact with a surface. Optimizing the actuator torques in such a way might be seen as a first step to controlling trajectories with regard to position, orientation, and forces in the presence of elasticity. Results of the method confirm the basic ideas of the topological solution.
