Notes: Conclusions 1. A study was made of a new process for the hydrostatic pressing of large-sized filter elements from titanium powder. 2. Designs of a pilot-plant hydrostatic pressing unit and a hydrostatic installation based on a standard hydraulic press have been developed. 3. The effects of compaction pressure and starting powder particle size upon the microstructure and properties of sintered filter elements were investigated. 4. The statistical shape characteristic of the titanium powder particles and pores in filters was evaluated by stereometric metallography techniques. The relation between the particle shape factor and the properties of filter elements was established.

Notes: Conclusions 1. A study was made of the sintering, by the hot pressing technique, of molybdenum powder in the temperature range 1700–1900°C. Conditions enabling dense specimens (of 3% porosity) to be prepared were determined. 2. The energy of activation for the sintering of molybdenum powder by the hot pressing technique was found to be 46 kcal/mole. 3. A comparison was made of the energies of activation for molybdenum and niobium. The difference in the energies of activation for these metals is due to the difference in their SWASC d5 values.

Notes: Conclusions 1. A study was made of the hot pressing of niobium powder and it was demonstrated that the densification process of this powder may be described within the framework of the theory of volume-viscous flow of porous material. 2. A quadratic relationship was established between the shear viscosity of dense niobium at the hot-pressing temperatures and time. 3. The energy of activation for the viscous flow of dense niobium obtained in this work, 31 kcal/mole, points to plastic flow of the material in hot pressing. 4. It was established that high-density parts from niobium powder may be obtained by hot pressing for 10–15 min at a temperature of 2000°C and a pressure of 80 kg/cm2. The porosity of specimens and parts prepared under these conditions is about 6%.

Notes: Conclusions 1. A study was made of the densification kinetics during sintering by hot pressing of the transition metals, Ti, Cr, Nb, Mo, Re, and W, and also of the carbides TiCX, ZrCX, HfCX, NbCX, and TaCX in their homogeneity regions. 2. The energies of activation for sintering by hot pressing of the transition metals and their carbides within their homogeneity regions were determined. It was established that, for the pure metals, the energy of activation increases with rise in SWASd5C. For the carbide phases of the transition metals of groups IV–V, the energy of activation grows with decrease in the stability of the sp3 configurations of the carbon atoms.

Notes: Conclusions 1. On the basis of a study of the sintering of transition metal nitride powders by the hot-pressingtechnique, suitable process parameters were established enabling dense nitride parts to be produced. 2. The energy of activation for viscous flow in hot pressing was determined and found to be much less than the energy of activation for the volume self-diffusion of atoms in the metallic sublattices of the compounds investigated. 3. Using hot-pressed specimens, measurements were made of the electrical resistivities and Hall coefficients of the nitrides. The electrical conductivity of nitrides of the transition metals of Groups IV–V has a metallic character; the effective current carrier concentration, calculated on the basis of the singleband model, is of the order of 1023 cm−3. The experimental data obtained on the physical properties of the nitrides show that hot-pressing densification yields practically nonporous materials which are identical in properties with the bulk nitrides.
