Notes: Hard-carbon films prepared by the rf-plasma decomposition of acetylene have been investigated by high-resolution 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and the H(15Nα,γ)C nuclear resonant reaction. It was found that the ratio of sp2:sp3 bound carbon was 1.6, and that virtually all sp3 carbon atoms are, in fact, bound to one or more hydrogen atoms. Bulk layers contain about 40% hydrogen; however, results of the measurements of the hydrogen concentration, as well as those of XPS, confirm that the composition and properties of these carbon films are a strong function of their distance from the initial growth interface, and are spatially varying over the first 40 nm.

Notes: Abstract Hedrlin and Pultr proved that every small category is isomorphic to a full subcategory of the category Alg (Δ) of all algebras of type Δ whenever the sum ∑Δ of their arities satisfies ∑Δ〉2. This article deals with simultaneous representation in categories of algebras, a generalization of the related question: given a subcategory k′ of a small category k, when does there exist an extension Δ′ of a type Δ with ∑Δ≽2 such that k′ is a full subcategory of Alg(Δ′) while the Alg (Δ)-redacts of algebras representing k′ determine a category isomorphic to k? We characterize simultaneous representability by algebras and their reducts completely, and show that it is closely related to Isbell's dominion. A consequence of the main result states that algebraically representable pairs (k′, k) of one-object categories k′ k are exactly those for which k′ coincides with its dominion in k, and provides an alternative characterization of the dominion. Simultaneous representability by partial algebras is not subject to any such restriction.

Notes: Abstract Adair determined the lattice of varieties of *-bands and provided a single identity for each of them. We construct a new set of identities for the same purpose. Both of these systems involve at least one variable which is starred. Using the second system of identities, we show that the system of identities constructed by Gerhard and the author for varieties of bands also represents a set of identities determining the varieties of *-bands. The same type of result is proved for varieties of band monoids and varieties of *-band monoids using the results of two papers by Wismath.

Notes: We give a new set of bases for band varieties which is simpler than those mentioned. It is again based on three families of words but they are defined by a single inductive formula. The proof consists in comparing the new system with the second one mentioned above. The formulae for meets and joins are also simpler in the new system of bases.

Notes: Abstract A ring R with identity 1 is said to be directly finite if for any a, b ∈ R, ab = 1 implies that ba = 1; otherwise R is directly infinite. With N the set of nonnegative integers, let B be the ring of N x N matrices over the ring of integers generated by two particular matrices. Properties of directly infinite rings are explored in relation to the ring B. This is made possible by various characterizations of the ring B one of which is that it is torsion free and generated by a bicyclic subsemigroup of its multiplicative semigroup. Some ideals and all idempotents of the ring B are constructed. The concepts of directly finite and chain finite idempotents are introduced in an arbitrary ring and applied to the ring B.
