    Description: The Los Menucos District, Rio Negro, Argentina, provides an excellent case history of a complex epithermal gold system mapped and explored using a combination of field mapping and multispectral/hyperspectral remote sensing. The district offers a host of argillic and advanced argillic alteration minerals at the surface, many of which are difficult to identify visually. A strategy utilizing regional targeting with Landsat TM to optimize field mapping followed by district-level survey with hyperspectral imaging (HSI) data demonstrates the value added by high-spectral resolution aircraft data. Standardized analysis methods consisting of spatial and spectral data reduction to a few key endmember spectra provides a consistent way to map spectrally active minerals. Minerals identified in the Los Menucos district using the JPL Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) include hematite, goethite, kaolinite, dickite, alunite, pyrophyllite, muscovite/sericite, montmorillonite, calcite, and zeolites. Hyperspectral maps show good correspondence with the results of field reconnaissance verification and spectral measurements acquired using an ASD field spectrometer. Further analysis of Hyperion (satellite-based) hyperspectral data indicates that similar mapping results can be achieved from satellite altitudes. These examples illustrate the high potential of hyperspectral remote sensing for geologic mapping and mineral exploration.

    Notes: Abstract Acid-base equilibria/disequilibria were evaluated in vivo in post-branchial arterial blood and pre-branchial venous blood of freshwater rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). This was accomplished using arterial and venous extracorporeal circuits in conjunction with a stopped-flow apparatus. After the abrupt stoppage of circulating post-branchial blood within the stopped-flow apparatus, pH increased slowly ([Delta]pH = +0.032 ± 0.004 pH units; n = 15), thus confirming the existence of an acid-base disequilibrium state in the arterial blood of rainbow trout. The slow downstream pH changes were unaffected by prior treatment of fish with the carbonic anhydrase inhibitor benzolamide (1.2 mg kg-1; [Delta]pH = +0.032 ± 0.01 pH units; n = 5) but were eliminated after intra-vascular injection of 10 mg kg-1 bovine carbonic anhydrase ([Delta]pH = -0.011 ± 0.003 pH units; n = 8). These results demonstrate that the acid-base disequilibrium in the arterial blood reflects a total absence of extracellular carbonic anhydrase activity. Similar stopped-flow experiments revealed the existence of a reduced, yet significant, acid-base disequilibrium in the venous blood circulating within the caudal vein ([Delta]pH = +0.004 ± 0.003 pH units; n = 15). Selective inhibition of extracellular carbonic anhydrase using benzolamide did not significantly influence the magnitude of the venous pH disequilibrium ([Delta]pH = +0.007 ± 0.007 pH units; n = 8) whereas intra-vascular injection of carbonic anhydrase eliminated the pH disequilibrium. These results demonstrate that extracellular carbonic anhydrase, although reported to be present within the skeletal muscle of rainbow trout, does not accelerate post-capillary pH changes in the venous circulation.

    Notes: The significant and often unpredictable variations, or transient effects, observed in the secondary ion intensities of O± and Si± during the initial stages of depth profiling with Cs+ have been studied. These were found to be primarily due to two competing effects: (a) the steady accumulation of Cs in the substrate as a function of sputtering time and (b) the varying oxygen content from the native oxide as a function of depth. These effects prevail over depths approximated by ∼2Rnorm, where Rnorm is the primary ion range normal to the surface. The Cs+ induced effects are consistent with a work function controlled resonance charge transfer process. A method for controlling these effects, namely the prior evaporation of Cs and use of an O2 leak during analysis is described. Doped (As and Sb) and undoped Si wafers with ∼0.9 nm thick native oxides were analyzed using 0.75 and 1 keV Cs+ beams incident at 60°. The more intense polyatomic AsSi− and SbSi− emissions did not exhibit these effects, although other relatively minor intensity fluctuations were still noted over the first ∼0.5 nm. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
