Notes: [Auszug] The conalbumin gene has been cloned and shown to consist of at least 17 exons approximately 60–200 base pairs long. The DNA sequence upstream from the region coding f or the 5′ end of the mRNA shows similarities with sequences present in homologous positions in other genes. High and low ...

Notes: [Auszug] A clone which contains the complete chicken ovalbumin gene, including its leader coding sequences, has been isolated. From electron microscopic analysis of this DNA we conclude that the minimal size of the transcriptional unit for ovalbumin is 7.7 kilobases. The DNA sequence of the region ...

Notes: [Auszug] Two large DNA fragments overlapping the chicken ovalbumin gene have been isolated by molecular cloning. Analysis of these fragments provided a map of a 46,000-base pair region of the chicken genome. This region contains the complete ovalbumin gene (including its mRNA leader-coding sequence) and at ...

Notes: [Auszug] An EcoRI fragment of chicken DNA (fragment ‘a’) containing a sequence complementary to the 3′ half of ovalbumin mRNA has been isolated by molecular cloning. Analysis of the cloned fragment proves conclusively that the chicken ovalbumin gene is split. Fragment ‘a’ ...

Notes: Abstract A new insulating thin polymer (〈0.1μm) formed by the electropolymerization of 2-OHBT is reported. The anodic oxidation of 2-OHBT on copper, iron and platinum in alcohol and alcohol–water solutions are investigated using cyclic polarization and chronoamperometry. Scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX) are performed to confirm the presence of the organic layer. Based on the results obtained, a model for the formation mechanism is proposed. The corrosion behaviour of the coated copper is studied in NaCl (3%) solution by impedance spectrometry and anodic polarization. The results of these experiments show a decrease in the dissolution of copper due to the barrier properties of the organic coating.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract The paper describes a computer system for monitoring the cardiac and respiratory rhythms and for collecting electrophysiological data from the newborn child to study the sudden infant death syndrome. The system uses the minicomputer MINC 23. The acquisition of the signals from the transducers, the detection of characteristic events on these signals, the coding of these events and the storage of the coded information in a file on floppy disc allowing its processing offline are performed in real time.

Notes: Abstract The detection and quantitative scoring (required for clinical care) of apnea characteristics in infants designated ‘near miss’ for sudden infant death syndrome, requires extensive visual analysis of polygraphic recordings. In this paper, we describe a polynomial filter-based computer method for the automatic detection and processing of respiratory pauses, expirations and inspirations from long-duration analogue recordings.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract EOLE is an apparatus for the automatic control of the O2 and CO2 concentrations in the inspiratory, alveolar or mean expiratory gases in artificially ventilated patients. It is composed of an artificial commercial ventilator controlled by a microcomputer, itself receiving information from the ventilator and from sensors. To obtain CO2, the expired gases are recycled through a bag. The gas composition in O2 and CO2 is controlled by two mixing valves. One commands the influx of pure oxygen, the other the relative proportion of room air and of expired gases from the bag. At each respiratory cycle the two mixing valves are driven by the microcomputer, which executes a nonlinear feedback control algorithm taking into account O2 and CO2 measurements as well as the reference commands. The precision of O2 and CO2 is about 4% and the settling time after the imposition of a new reference command is of the order of 3 min.

Notes: Summary The selection at 22° C of yeast cordycepin (3′-deoxyadenosine) sensitive mutants which would be temperature-sensitive at 37°C allowed the obtention of mutants specifically impaired in processing of Poly(A)-containing RNAs at 37°C. The mutants displaying this phenotype belong to two different loci. The biochemical study of the physiological function which is blocked by the mutation has revealed that the level of radioactive Poly(A)-containing RNAs found in a 5 min pulse after a 10 min shift at 37°C is 6 times less in the mutants than in the wild type without reduction of the non Poly(A)-containing RNAs fraction. Further studies have shown no alteration in the two Poly(A) polymerases activities and suggest strongly a faster decay of Poly(A)-containing RNAs in the mutants.
