    Notes: Summary Harmonic analyses along latitudes 30°, 45° and 60° of the mean northern hemisphere water vapor field are presented. The seasonal variations of these spectra are investigated and the relative contributions of the various scales of mean eddies to the meridional transport of water vapor are calculated. Of special interest is the finding that perturbations of wave number 2, corresponding to the great continents and oceans, are dominant at all three latitudes and of primary importance in effecting the northward transport of water vapor.

    Notes: Summary The atmospheric balance of the kinetic energy of the zonally averaged zonal motion is investigated from five years of daily data at 800 stations for the northern hemisphere. The basic equation for such energy is used, together with the simplifying assumption that the frictional destruction is due in the main to stresses acting across horizontal surfaces, being thus presumably related to the vertical shear of the mean zonal wind, although no further details are needed in the analysis. The five-year averages of various terms as well as their seasonal means appear to give reasonable results.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Analog mit der Berechnung von Daten des Flusses des Momentes der Bewegungsgrösse über Breiten-Oberflächen in der Erd-Atmosphäre wird eine korrespondierende Berechnung für den Fall unseres Sternsystems und eventuell anderer spiraler Himmelskörper vorgeschlagen. Eine zylindrische Wand mit konstantem Radius wird benutzt, um die Breitenwand zu ersetzen, und dieses Problem wird entwickelt durch die Betrachtung eines idealen Modelles. Drehmomente der Schwerkraft kommen bei diesen Problem hinzu, zusätzlich der Wirkungen von Advektion und in aller Wahrscheinlichkeit anderer Drehmomente in den vorhandenen Systemen. Die Beziehung der Drehmomente der Schwerkraft in Bezug auf gewöhnliche Spiralen ist besprochen, und gewisse mehr spezialisierte Wirkungen für den Fall von Stangen-Spiralen werden eingeführt und besprochen. Der Zusammenhang dieses Problems mit der klassischen Theorie von Drehmomenten der Gezeiten ist nachgewiesen.
    Abstract: Sommario In analogia ai calcoli che, partendo da dati sperimentali, vengono fatti sul trasferimento del momento angolare fra zone dell'atmosfera a diverse latitudini, vengono qui proposti corrispondenti calcoli per la nostra galassia e possibilmente per altre nebulose a spirale. Viene usata una superficie cilindrica a raggio costante in sostituzione della superficie conica a latitudine costante; l'argomento è sviluppato secondo un modello ideale. La coppia gravitazionale viene presa in considerazione insieme agli effetti convettivi e ad altre possibili coppie. Viene discussa la relazione fra la coppia gravitazionale e la struttura di una spirale ordinaria; sono quindi introdotti e discussi certi effetti nel caso di spirali a sbarra. Infine viene messo in luce la relazione del presente argomento con la teoria classica della coppia dovuta alle marce.
    Notes: Summary By analogy with the calculation from data of angular momentum flow across latitude surfaces in the earth's atmosphere, the corresponding calculation is proposed for the case of our galaxy and possibly other spiral nebulae. A cylindrical wall of constant radius is used to replace the latitude wall, and the subject is developed through consideration of an ideal model. Gravitational torques enter the problem in addition to advective effects and possible other torques in actual systems. The relation of gravitational torques to the structure of ordinary spirals is discussed, and certain more special effects for the case of barred spirals are introduced and discussed. The connection of the subject with the classical theory of tidal evolution is pointed out.

    Notes: Summary A study of the mean atmospheric humidity conditions on a planetary scale during the IGY covering the calendar year 1958 is presented. The fields of mean precipitable water content and of the zonal and meridional transports of water vapor are analyzed for the entire globe. Zonally averaged values of the various quantities at several levels are presented in tabular form and compared whenever possible with previous results or indirectly are analyzed on the basis of information obtained from different sources. The structure of these fields is studied and the corresponding implications for the general circulations of the atmosphere are discussed. Finally the zonal water balance for all the globe is discussed and its implications analyzed.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es wird eine Untersuchung über die vertikale, integrierte Störungsbewegung von Wasserdampf in der nördlichen Halbkugel für den Sommer, für den Winter und für das ganze Jahr 1950 vorgelegt. Tabellen und graphische Darstellungen zonaler Durchschnittszahlenwerte, die aus analysierten Karten abgeleitet wurden, werden im Hinblick auf verschiedene meteorologische Beziehungen diskutiert. Es wurde festgestellt, daß der nach Süden gerichtete Transport von Wassrdampf durch eine meridionale Zirkulation in derHadleyschen Art in den Tropen dieser Zelle keine besondere Bedeutung für die Betrachtungen der hemisphärischen Bewegung und der zonalen kinetischen Energie verschafft, wie im allgemeinen in der klassischen Zirkulationstheorie angenommen wird.
    Abstract: Résumé On présente une étude du transport perturbé de la vapeur d'eau intégré verticalement dans l'hémisphère nord pour l'été, l'hiver et l'année 1950 entière. Les tableaux et diagrammes des valeurs numériques, moyennes zonales, extraits des cartes d'analyses des transports zonal et méridional perturbés pour l'hémisphère, sont reproduits et discutés à la lumière des diverses considérations météorologiques. On a trouvé que le transport de la vapeur d'eau effectué par la circulation méridionale du typeHadley dans les régions tropicales n'implique pas une importance comparable à celle de la même cellule quand on considère la quantité du mouvement et de l'énergie cinétique zonale comme il est assumé dans les théories classiques de la circulation générale.
    Notes: Summary A study of the vertically integrated eddy flux of water, vapor in the northern hemisphere for summer, winter and the entire year of 1950 is presented. Tables and graphs of zonally averaged numerical values extracted from maps of the analyses of the zonal eddy and meridional eddy components for the hemisphere are reproduced and discussed in the light of various meteorological considerations. It is found that the southward transport of water vapor by theHadley type meridional circulation in the tropics does not imply a comparable importance of this cell for hemispheric momentum and zonal kinetic energy considerations as is assumed in classical general circulation theories.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es wird versucht, die verschiedenen Formen des horizontalen Wasserdampftransportes in der gesamten Atmosphäre in einem planetarischen Maßstab während des Internationalen Geophysikalischen Jahres zu studieren und abzuschätzen. Die relative Bedeutung der Schätzungen der verschiedenen Übertragungsarten für den Gesamttransport wird mit Bezug auf die hauptsächlichen Charakteristika der allgemeinen Zirkulation analysiert. Karten der Felder der vertikal integrierten mittleren zonalen und mittleren meridionalen turbulenten Transporte, welche die Erde von Pol zu Pol umfassen, wurden gezeichnet; ihre Struktur und die aus ihnen zu ziehenden Folgerungen werden diskutiert. Zur Vervollständigung der Beschreibung der verschiedenen Übertragungsprozesse wird die vertikale Verteilung der geschätzten Beiträge der vorübergehenden und der stationären Wirbel als durchschnittliche Zirkulationswerte und auch als entsprechende vertikal integrierte Werte in Tabellenform, in Querschnitten oder in meridionalen Profilen dargestellt. Die Hauptcharakteristika der mittleren Divergenzfelder jeder der drei Hauptarten des Wasserdampftransportes werden analysiert, und die entsprechenden Beiträge zur gesamten zonalen Wasserbilanz der Erde werden diskutiert. Die geschätzten Werte der verschiedenen Felder scheinen übereinstimmende Resultate zu geben und stimmen im wesentlichen mit früheren Resultaten überein.
    Abstract: Résumé Une tentative est faite pour étudier et estimer différents modes de transfert horizontal de vapeur d'eau pour toute l'atmosphère et cela, à l'échelle planétaire et pour l'Année Géophysique Internationale. L'importance relative des estimations des differents modes de transfert, en ce qui concerne le transport total, est analysée eu égard aux principales caractéristiques de la circulation générale. On donne des cartes couvrant le globe entier du pôle nord au pôle sud et représentant les valeurs intégrées verticalement du transport turbulent moyen zonal et du transport turbulent moyen méridional. La structure et l'implication de ces champs sont discutées. Afin de compléter la description des différents processus de transfert, la distribution verticale des contributions dues aux tourbillons de turbulence transitoires et stationnaires, ainsi que leurs valeurs intégrées verticalement sont tabulées; de plus, leurs profils méridionaux et leurs sections tranversales ont été dessinés. Les principales caractéristiques de la divergence moyenne de chacun des trois principaux modes de transfert de vapeur d'eau en latitude sont discutées. Les valeurs estimées des différents champs paraissent donner des résultats cohérents et surtout en accord avec ceux obtenus antérieurement.
    Notes: Summary An attempt is made to study and to estimate the various modes of horizontal water vapor transfer in the entire atmosphere on a planetary scale during the IGY. The relative importance of the estimates of the various transfer modes for the total transport is analysed in relation to the main features of the general circulation. Maps for the vertically integrated fields of the mean zonal and mean meridional eddy transports covering the globe from pole to pole are presented and their structure and implications discussed. To complete the description of the various transfer processes, the vertical distribution of the estimated contributions by the transient and standing eddies, and by the mean circulations as well as the corresponding vertically integrated values are given in tabular form and in cross sections or meridional profiles. The main characteristics of the mean divergence fields of each one of three main modes of water vapor transfer are analyzed and the corresponding contributions for the total zonal water balance for the globe are discussed. The estimated values of the various fields appear to give consistent results and mainly agree with previous findings.
