Notes: A series of twenty-one trials was undertaken during 1985–1988 to investigate the effect on lowland silage crops of 0, 40 or 80 kg ha−1 phosphate (P2O5) fertilizer applied as triple superphosphate (46% P2O5) in the autumn, spring or as a split application (spring and after first cut). All sites had moderate to high sodium bicarbonate-extractable soil phosphorus contents (18–34 mg P 1−1 in air-dried soil).Significant yield responses were obtained at eight of the forty-two individual cuts (two cuts per site). When meaned over all sites, spring or autumn applied phosphate increased dry matter yield at both first and second cut (mean total increase 0·32 t ha−1), though the effect was significant only at the highest phosphate rate. The time of phosphate application had no overall effect on yield. Herbage P concentration and phosphate off take were significantly increased at both cuts by both rates of phosphate. Generally, the most recent application had a significantly greater effect than other timings. These findings indicate that DM yield responses to freshly available phosphate can occur on soils of moderate P status.

Notes: A secondary ion mass spectrometer equipped with a low-resolution argon ion source and a small quadrupole ion mass analyser was calibrated for moderate to high concentrations of hydrogen and deuterium in graphite. The polished graphite samples were implanted with hydrogen isotope ions of 1 or 2 KeV energy. The depth profiles of the implanted hydrogen were determined by means of elastic recoil detection (ERD) and compared with those obtained by SIMS. Linear correlations were found between the peak D+/C+ or CH+/C+ ratio and the maximum D or H concentration determined by ERD, as well as between the integral of the SIMS profile curves and the total quantity of hydrogen isotope.

Notes: In this study we have analysed coupons cut from one of the internal components of the TdeV tokamak, the stainless-steel side sheeting of a guard limiter, which was removed when the tokamak was modified at the end of 1988. Depth profiles of the accumulated layer of contaminants have been compiled by a variety of surface analytical techniques, including Auger electron spectroscopy, elastic recoil detection and scanning electron microscopy.Melting, arcing, bubbles and large exfoliated layers of coating are observed on the surface of the guard limiter. The damage becomes less severe with increasing distance from the plasma and disappears near the wall. The deposits consist of a mixture of carbon, oxygen, stainless steel and Inconel. Most of the deposited impurity is carbon. Of the deposited metal mixture, only about 6% is Inconel, implying that metal impurities originated mainly from the stainless-steel foils that form a frame around the guard limiter, whereas the Inconel bars were relatively untouched. The metal concentration is a maximum at the surface, coinciding with the maximum concentration of oxygen. Metal carbide appears to be formed with the metal deposits near the surface and at the interface with the substrate, whereas the middle layer consists mainly of ‘amorphous’ carbon.

Notes: Analyses by RBS and AES of beryllium collector samples exposed to discharges in the Tokamak de Varennes have been made. Good agreement for the total amounts and types of material deposited on collectors oriented in each of three ways was observed. However, analysis of the AES sputter-depth profile indicated a peaking of the metal near the outer surface of the collectors. This can be explained by a simple model involving sputtering and redeposition during the tokamak discharge. Implications of this model are that the average amount of material deposited on the collectors may not be related directly to impurity concentrations in the plasma. Experimental analysis of material deposited on the collectors must be made with sufficient depth resolution to obtain information about sputter-redeposition activities during plasma discharges.

Notes: The hydrolytic stability of microporous Mitrathane polyetherurethane urea vascular prostheses has been evaluated at pH 7 and pH 9, at 37°, 60°, and 80°C for time periods of up to 968 days. Mechanical strength was evaluated using a hydrodynamic burst test and surface chemical changes by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The samples held at 80°C showed the greatest mechanical strength loss which corresponded to the hydrolysis of the urethane groups. It was concluded that the gross in vivo surface degradation of Mitrathane prostheses, observed after six months, could not have been caused by simple chemical hydrolysis alone, as the polymer was found to be stable at 37°C for at least 11 months.

Notes: To combat the problem of specimen charging when analysing insulators with a high energy monochromatic AgLα x-ray source for XPS in the VG ESCA3, the application and use of a low energy electron flood gun is investigated. It is found that individual specimens can require widely differing ‘optimum’ conditions for the satisfactory management of surface charging. However, the use of an accelerating voltage of at least 6 V, together with an emission current of at least 0.25 mA, appears to be satisfactory for the majority of specimens. It is concluded that an electron flood gun, when properly set-up, can play an important role in gaining chemical state information from non-conducting materials using XPS, though it is noted that the use of secondary binding energy referencing may still be necessary.
