    Description / Table of Contents: Übersicht Der A-P Algorithmus wurde ursprünglich zur Eigenreduktion reellsymmetrischer Matrizen aufgestellt; er wurde jedoch in den letzten Jahren auf normalisierbare reelle und komplexe Matrizen erweitert. Beträchtliche Erfahrungen mit der Methode bei der Bestimmung der Eigenschwingungsformen und der Knickformen komplizierter Tragwerke haben gezeigt, daß sie ein wirksames Hilfsmittel für Computerrechnungen ist. insbesondere in Verbindung mit der von Argyris entwickelten Matrizenmethode [1, 2, 3]. Neuere Forschungen über Schwingungsprobleme mit nicht-proportionaler Dämpfung bestätigen, daß die Methode auch auf diesem Gebiet sehr wertvoll ist. Es wird hier die Erweiterung dieses Problems behandelt, um aerodynamische Dämpfungs- und Steifigkeitskräfte zu berücksichtigen, wobei auf die Untersuchung der dynamischen Stabilität eines gesamten Flugzeuges mittels der antisymmetrischen Frei-Frei-Schwingungsformen Bezug genommen wird.
    Notes: Summary The A-P algorithm was originally formulated for the eigenreduction of real symmetric matrices but has been extended in recent years to handle normalizable real and complex matrices. Considerable experience with the method for the determination of normal modes of free vibration and buckling modes in complex structures has indicated it to be an efficient computer method, especially in conjunction with the matrix structural methods developed by Argyris [1, 2, 3]. Recent research involving vibration problems having non-proportional damping indicates that the method is equally valuable in this area. The extension of this problem to include aerodynamic damping and stiffness is discussed with reference to a dynamic stability analysis based on the free-free antisymmetric modes of a whole aircraft.

    Description: The scarps along the margins of the Vales Marineris display a complex assemblage of forms that have been related to a variety of mass wasting and sapping processes. These scarp segments display variations in the degree of development of spur and gully topography, the number and density of apparent sapping features and the frequency of large scale landslides which reflect the age, geology and processes of slope development throughout the Valles Marineris. This regional analysis should provide more information on the geologic evolution of the Valles Marineris as well as new insight into the relative importance of different processes in the development of the scarp forms. In order to evaluate the regional variation in scarp form and the influence of time and structure on scarp development geomorphic mapping and morphometric analysis of geologically distinct regions of Valles Marineris is being undertaken.

    Description: The Cheney-Palouse tract of the channeled scabland is the largest continuous tract of scabland in eastern Washington. The tract is composed of a varied assortment of bedrock erosional forms, loess islands, and gravel bars. Prominent bedrock longitudinal grooves and inner channels formed by macroturbulent plucking erosion of the jointed rock. Loess island forms vary as a function of their position within the flow. The three major types (submerged, partially submerged, and subaerially exposed) created sedimentologic conditions and resulting bar forms distinct from one another. Other bar forms, notably expansion bars, account for most of the sedimentation in the tract.

    Description: Throughout the Valles Marineris scarp morphology varies as a function of lithology, structure and scarp height. In addition lithology is an important control on permeability and the relative importance of spring sapping processes. Geomorphic mapping of distinct subareas can be used to define the characteristic scarp forms. Distinct morphologic zones defined on the basis of regional variations in lithology are described. Lithology and tectonic history are shown to be the two most important factors controlling slope development. Regional variation in scarp morphology can be correlated with the orientation and density of fracture systems; scarp height and the presence of rejuvenated fault scarps; and the thickness and degree of exposure of presumably less competent, more permeable, water saturated crated plateau material in the chasmata scarps.

    Description: Central Texas is subject to infrequent, unusually intense rainstorms which cause extremely rapid runoff from drainage basins developed on the deeply dissected limestone and marl bedrock of the Edwards Plateau. One approach to flood hazard evaluation in this area is a parametric model relating flood hydrograph characteristics to quantitative geomorphic properties of the drainage basins. The preliminary model uses multiple regression techniques to predict potential peak flood discharge from basin magnitude, drainage density, and ruggedness number. After mapping small catchment networks from remote sensing imagery, input data for the model are generated by network digitization and analysis by a computer assisted routine of watershed analysis. The study evaluated the network resolution capabilities of the following data formats: (1) large-scale (1:24,000) topographic maps, employing Strahler's "method of v's," (2) standard low altitude black and white aerial photography (1:13,000 and 1:20,000 scales), (3) NASA - generated aerial infrared photography at scales ranging from 1:48,000 to 1:123,000, and (4) Skylab Earth Resources Experiment Package S-190A and S-190B sensors (1:750,000 and 1:500,000 respectively).

    Description: The author has identified the following significant results. Development of a quantitative hydrogeomorphic approach to flood hazard evaluation was hindered by (1) problems of resolution and definition of the morphometric parameters which have hydrologic significance, and (2) mechanical difficulties in creating the necessary volume of data for meaningful analysis. Measures of network resolution such as drainage density and basin Shreve magnitude indicated that large scale topographic maps offered greater resolution than small scale suborbital imagery and orbital imagery. The disparity in network resolution capabilities between orbital and suborbital imagery formats depends on factors such as rock type, vegetation, and land use. The problem of morphometric data analysis was approached by developing a computer-assisted method for network analysis. The system allows rapid identification of network properties which can then be related to measures of flood response.
