Summary Under the combined influence of moisture and an electric field so-called 'water trees' tend to occur in polymer insulations. They are interpreted as a consequence of liquid precipitations of water, whereby the local accumulation of water molecules is a consequence of the action of the dielectric forces on water molecules. It is shown that a model concept developed on the basis of these assumptions explains the experimental findings.

Zusammenfassung Die in hochpolymeren Isolierungen bei elektrischer Belastung in feuchter Umgebung auftretenden water trees werden als Folge von Ausscheidungen flüssigen Wassers interpretiert. Ihre Entstehung wird auf eine lokale Konzentrationserhöhung von Wassermolekülen im Polymer infolge dielektrischer Kräfte in Bereichen lokaler Felderhöhungen zurückgeführt. Rechnungen unter vereinfachenden Annahmen zeigen, daß das Modell auch quantitativ befriedigende Ergebnisse liefert.
