    Notes: Abstract An experimental study of the flow around and behind an axisymmetric body driven by a marine propeller is reported. Experiments were performed in a wind tunnel to document this complex, unsteady, three-dimensional, turbulent shear flow. Measurements were made in the boundary layer and wake of the bare body with a fixed dummy hub for the propeller, with the dummy hub rotating, and finally, with the propeller in operation. A five-hole yaw probe was employed for the mean-flow measurements, and two- and threesensor hotwires were used to obtained the mean and turbulent velocity fields. Part 1 of this two-part paper describes the experimental arrangement and circumferentially-averaged results which clarify certain overall aspects of the flow when it is viewed as a rotationally-symmetric flow. These are of special interest in marine hydrodynamics. In Part 2, the triple-sensor hotwire data are analyzed using phase-averaging techniques to reconstruct the instantaneous velocity and Reynolds-stress fields downstream of the propeller to show the evolution of the wakes of individual blades, blade-tip vortices, and the complex flow associated with vortices generated at hub-blade junctions.

    Notes: Abstract Experiments have been conducted in a wind tunnel on a 10-foot-long model of a mathematical ship form to study the flow in the boundary layer and wake. The measurements were made with a five-hole pilot and a three-sensor hotwire probe, and extend from midships to 0.8 ship length downstream of the stern. The data include the pressure and mean-velocity fields, all six components of the Reynolds-stress tensor, and all ten components of the triple-product tensor. The evolution of the wake from the thick boundary layer over the stern has been documented in detail.

    Notes: Abstract An accurate non-intrusive method of measurement of liquid and sediment velocities, called Discriminator Laser Doppler Velocimetry (DLDV) is described. The DLDV arrangement consists of a LDV, and a discriminator system that utilizes near on-axis diffraction from sediment particles passing through or grazing the LDV measurement volume to result in strong voltage signals. For liquid velocity statistics, velocity measurements associated with a discriminator voltage above a threshold are discarded; the discriminator signal is used to validate that only particle velocities are recorded during particle velocity measurement. Possible error sources in the use of DLDV are discussed. Measurements using DLDV in an open-channel alluvial sand-laden flow indicate differences between liquid and particle velocities even for dilute sand concentrations.

    Notes: Abstract Mean-velocity measurements were made in the boundary layer on a smooth circular cylinder fitted with trip wires to model supercritical flow. The data are compared with the predictions of a boundary-layer calculation method to study the relative influence of surface curvature and low-Reynolds-number effects, and to assess the accuracy with which the location of separation can be determined. It is shown that the effects of surface curvature are most important close to separation while those of low Reynolds numbers are significant everywhere except near separation.

    Notes: Abstract Several two-equation turbulence models using isotropic eddy viscosity and wall functions are assessed by solution of the neutral atmospheric boundary layer over a flat surface and wind flow over two- and three-dimensional models and real terrain. Calculations are presented for wind flow over the Sirhowy Valley in Wales, an embankment along the Rhine in Germany and the Askervein Hill in Scotland. Comparisons of predictions with previous work, and laboratory and field data, show that the RNG-based k–∈ model gives the best agreement with respect to the flow profiles and length of the separated flow region. The results of this model are analyzed with a non-linear stress-strain relation to gauge the potential effect of turbulence anisotropy.
