    Notes: A technique was developed for screening large numbers of watercress plants for resistance to watercress yellow spot virus (WYSV) and the crook-root fungus. Plants were raised in modules containing sand in the glasshouse, transported and placed in experimental watercress beds, recovered after 5 or 6 weeks, examined visually for crook-root infection and tested by ELISA for infection by WYSV. High incidences of crook root (98.8%) and virus (88.9%) were obtained in a watercress line known to be susceptible to both pathogens. Evaluation of the technique using 10 different watercress lines showed that it was capable of revealing a range of responses from very susceptible to very resistant, with UK lines being most susceptible to both diseases. When grown on, the very resistant line was different morphologically from UK watercress and was identified as early winter-cress (Barbarea verna). Results showed an association between crook root scores and ELISA values, providing further circumstantial evidence for the close relationship between the two pathogens. The implications of the results for watercress resistance screening are discussed.

    Notes: Three nurseries produced apple rootstocks (M9) and budwood (cv. Royal Gala), which they exchanged at the end of the first year. Each nursery then budded its own budwood onto the rootstocks it had produced and that from the other two nurseries. Budded trees were grown on for a further year before being planted at HRI, East Malling in southern England; NIHPBS, Loughgall in Northern Ireland; and ADAS, Rosemaund in the West Midlands of England. Canker development was monitored twice a year. The position of the infected trees within the orchard was recorded, as was the position of the canker on each tree (main-stem or peripheral). Nectria galligena was isolated from representative cankers and analysed using molecular techniques. At the sites in Northern Ireland and HRI there was a strong positional effect, especially of peripheral cankers, indicating that most of the inoculum was external and had been spread from neighbouring orchards. There was little or no positional effect on main-stem cankers at any of the three sites. The proportions of different isolates taken from peripheral cankers was different in Northern Ireland from that in England, suggesting different populations associated with the geographic areas. In contrast, the populations of N. galligena obtained from main-stem cankers were very similar in England and Northern Ireland. It was concluded that a small proportion of trees developing canker were infected during propagation, with no symptom development until after planting. In a second trial it was demonstrated that trees infected during the propagation phase, and particularly at budding and heading back, could develop canker up to 3 years later. While it is clear that some canker developing in the orchard can be associated with the nursery of production, in climatic conditions conducive to the formation and dissemination of conidia, inoculum from surrounding infected orchards is the primary source of the pathogen. Aerial spread is therefore an essential element of the epidemiology of N. galligena, and its control is a crucial part of any canker-control programme.

    Notes: The effect of reduced doses of propiconazole (Tilt) and different initial inoculation levels on leek rust caused by Puccinia allii was quantified by three parameters: (i) rate of plant-to-plant spread (b), (ii) the time taken for 50% plant infection (m) and, (iii) rate of appearance of new pustules. All propiconazole doses tested reduced values for b compared with an unsprayed treatment but lower doses had little effect on new pustule appearance. Although b values were different for the same propiconazole dose at two field sites with different epidemics, values compared with the unsprayed treatments were similar. Fungicide efficacy was therefore measured independently of disease level in the field. The parameter b for rust spread was also directly related to marketable yield at harvest. Initial rust incidence levels of 〈 0.1% infected plants reduced b compared with higher levels (0.5–5%). This suggests that rust spread occurs at a maximum rate unless incidence is extremely low. Reduced doses of propiconazole also suppressed spore germination of P. allii and the appearance of rust pustules in inoculated plants in the glasshouse. The value of the parameters identified is discussed in relation to leek rust control, epidemiology and the effect of weather.

    Notes: The environmental factors that influence infection of lettuce by ascospores of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, and subsequent disease development, were investigated in controlled environment and field conditions. When lettuce plants were inoculated with a suspension of ascospores in water or with dry ascospores and exposed to a range of wetness durations or relative humidities at different temperatures, all plants developed disease but there was no relationship between leaf wetness duration or humidity and percentage of diseased plants. Ascospores started to germinate on lettuce leaves after 2–4 h of continuous leaf wetness at optimum temperatures of 15–25°C. The rate of development of sclerotinia disease and the final percentage of plants affected after 50 days were greatest at 16–27°C, with disease symptoms first observed 7–9 days after inoculation, and maximum final disease levels of 96%. At lower temperatures, 8–11°C, disease was first observed 20–26 days after inoculation, with maximum final disease levels of 10%. Disease symptoms were always observed first at the stem base. In field-grown lettuce in Norfolk, 2000 and 2001, inoculated with ascospore suspensions, disease occurred only in lettuce planted in May and June, with a range of 20–49% of plants with disease by 8 weeks after inoculation. In naturally infected field-grown lettuce in Cheshire, 2000, disease occurred mainly in lettuce planted throughout May, with a maximum of 31% lettuce diseased within one planting, but subsequent plantings had little (≤ 4%) or no disease. Lack of disease in the later plantings in both Norfolk and Cheshire could not be attributed to differences in weather factors.

    Notes: The algorithm of an optical detection system was first investigated for its ability to correctly classify transplanted crops and weeds during the critical early stages of crop establishment and its robustness over a range of different crop species. The trade-off was then examined between increasing the sensitivity of the detection system vs. the possibility of, in doing so, misclassifying some crop plants as weeds and inadvertently removing them. This was achieved by running a competition model using parameters derived from the image analysis and assessing the outcome of scenarios in terms of yield. The optimum parameter values to maximize the detection of the crop and the optimum parameter values to maximize the detection of the weed appeared relatively insensitive to time of image capture or weed density. They also appeared insensitive for different crop species where the crop had similar growth habit. However, competition scenarios indicated that the detection system parameter settings to achieve optimum yields were sensitive to the competitive ability of the weed species. For Veronica persica, crop yield was more sensitive to accidental crop removal than from competition. In contrast, in the presence of Tripleurospermum inodorum, yield loss was more attributable to weed competition. Importantly, linking the detection system with the competition model illustrated the principle that optimum yield may not necessarily be obtained by maximizing weed removal or minimizing crop removal. This first example of combining a detection system with a competition model presents a new opportunity to quantify the sensitivity of image classification in terms of yield.
