    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Einige Faktoren, die die Kompressibilität von Aggregaten bestimmen Diese Arbeit untersucht die Variablen, die die Kompressibilität von Gesteinsaggregaten bestimmen, und liefert experimentelle Angaben über das Verhalten von Kalkstein-, Dolerit- und Sandsteinproben bis zu 19,0 mm Korngröße. Die Ergebnisse weisen darauf hin, daß, während der anfängliche relative Porenraum des Aggregats den Grad der potentiell vorhandenen Kompressionsspannung bestimmt, der durchschnittliche Aggregatsdurchmesser (d m) und die eigentliche Druckfestigkeit (S c) die Kompressibilitäts-Spannungs-Verformungscharakteristik laut der Formel $$\varepsilon \alpha \ln \frac{{\sigma d_m {1 \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {1 2}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} 2}}}{{S_c }}$$ bestimmen.
    Abstract: Résumé Influence de la résistance des particules sur la compression d'un agrégat broyé Les auteurs examinent les paramètres qui affectent la compressibilité des agrégats de roches et présentent des résultats expérimentaux obtenus avec des échantillons de calcaire, de dolérite et de grès, sur l'influence du diamètre des grains en-dessous de 19 mm. Les résultats suggèrent que l'indice des vides initial impose le taux de la déformation à la compression dont on dispose, cependant que le diamètre des grains (d m) et la résistance à la compression (S c) définissen les caractéristiques de la courbe de compressibilité.
    Notes: Summary The Effect of Particle Strength on the Compression of Crushed Aggregate The paper examines the variables controlling the compression of rock aggregates, and presents experimental data on the behaviour of limestone, dolerite and sandstone samples in size ranges up to 19.0 mm. The results suggest that while the initial void ratio of the aggregate determines the degree of compressive strain potentially available, the average aggregate dimension (d m) and intrinsic compressive strength (S c) determine the compressive stressstrain characteristics in the form, $$\varepsilon \alpha \ln \frac{{\sigma d_m {1 \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {1 2}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} 2}}}{{S_c }}$$

    Notes: Results of X-ray textural studies of dolomite and the clay minerals in the Marl Slate and of siderite from the top of the Mansfield Marine Band are interpreted in terms of the possible diagenetic development of the re-crystallized carbonates in these two rocks. From computer processed (1014) fabrics of the two trigonal carbonates it is deduced that there is a c-axis preferred orientation concordant with the normal to the stratification. An early diagenesis in this oriented mode must be a function of both a threshold stress difference in a non-hydrostatic stress field (in effect a necessary minimum depth of burial) and also of the presence of connate solutions. The existance of a minor percentage of dolomite oriented with the rhomb faces parallel to the stratification probably reflects an even earlier crystallization within the top few metres of sediment, when the confining pressures and pressure differences were of insignificant amplitude. It is concluded that a higher rate of sedimentation associated with the Coal Measure sequence is responsible for the singular preferred orientation of the siderite.

    Notes: Summary Ground vibration data, originating from impact hammers and vibrodrivers and compiled by different research workers, have been plotted in scaled distance form and statistically analysed. A quadratic regression curve rather than a linear regression curve provides a better visual fit to the several data sets. In each case, superimposed on the graphical data points are also the one-half standard deviation and the one standard deviation curves. It is argued that the quadratic one-half standard deviation curves, generated from an analysis of all the reliable vibration information compiled by the authors from impact hammers and vibrodrivers, be used for design of piling operations in order to mitigate excessive environmental vibration.

    Notes: Summary Ground vibration data from impact hammers and vibrodrivers can be processed to provide a basis for estimating levels of ground vibration for future piling. The information from which empirical laws concerning vibration transmission can be formulated usually stems from scaled distance plots. Both the equations and the graphical axes on which the data are plotted are of a logarithmic nature. This renders them less amenable to immediate on-site application. Recommended working laws for estimating vibration transmission are expressed in graphical and tabular form. Some worked examples are included to explain the operation of the system.

    Notes: Abstract Amplitude and style of ground vibration from two types of pile driving — vibrodriver (periodic) and drophammer (transient) — are considered for the analysis of deformation in a portal frame structure. It is argued that the three-dimensional character of the vibration should be determined in the form of a resultant vector and this requires the measurement of vibration in three directions at right angles together with information on the sense of the motion along each orthogonal axis of vibration. Such resultant vector data during the period of vibration are best processed and presented in the style of a suite of hemispherical projections that comprise upper and lower hemisphere forms, respectively embodying components of upward and downward vibrational motion. It is shown that analysis for the dynamic stability of a simple block foundation is assisted by reference to the hemispherical projection representation and by the use of ground surface acceleration data.
