    Description / Table of Contents: Summary First a discussion of the historical development of thunderstorm research and a survey of the existing thunderstorm theories with reference to the physical possibilities of generating electrical potentials is given. Electromagnetic induction has hitherto not been used to explain the electricity of thunderclouds. It is shown that a theory on this basis may render quantitatively satisfactory results. Various general features of thunderstorms which follow from this theory are in agreement with observations. The new thunderstorm theory is offered for discussion, and measurements are proposed which should decide on its validity.
    Abstract: Résumé L'auteur expose une classification des théories de l'orage d'après les procédés de production d'électricité connus en physique. Il constate qu'on n'a jamais fait appel à l'induction électromagnétique qui peut cependant servir de base à une théorie satisfaisante; les conséquences théoriques sont vérifiées par des observations. L'auteur propose une discussion de la nouvelle théorie et il suggère des mesures propres à la vérifier.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Nach einer Einführung in die geschichtliche Entwicklung der Gewitterforschung wird eine Einteilung der Gewittertheorien nach den in der Physik bekannten Arten der Elektrizitätserzeugung gegeben. Es wird dabei festgestellt, daß die elektromagnetische Induktion noch nie als Grundlage einer Gewittertheorie verwendet wurde. Anschließend wird gezeigt, daß eine Gewittertheorie auf dieser Grundlage quantitativ befriedigende Ergebnisse liefern kann. Auch aus der Theorie abgeleitete Eigenschaften von Gewittern werden durch Beobachtungen bestätigt. Die neue Gewittertheorie wird zur Diskussion gestellt und es werden Messungen vorgeschlagen, die eine Entscheidung für oder gegen diese Theorie herbeiführen können.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary Following a suggestion byB. Vonnegut to reconsider electrical torando theories, the author shows that the thunderstorm theory based on electromagnetic induction is also applicable to the tornado problem. Several characteristics of the tornado are easily explained, adding evidence of the validity of the thunderstorm theory. The strongest argument in favour of the effectiveness of electromagnetic induction may be considered the observation of a rhomb-shaped thunderstorm cloud which generated several tornadoes. Such a cloud can be explained by the spacial distribution of its dipole elements.
    Abstract: Résumé L'auteur se réfère à la proposition deB. Vonnegut de reconsidérer la théorie électrique des tornades. Il démontre que la théorie des orages, basée sur l'induction électro-magnétique, est également applicable au problème des tornades. Non seulement on explique aisément par ce moyen plusieurs propriétés des tornades, mais encore la probabilité de la valeur d'application de la théorie des orages en est sensiblement renforcée. Le meilleur argument en faveur de l'activité de l'induction électro-magnétique est certes l'observation d'un nuage d'orage en losange qui engendra plusieurs tornades. Cette formation peut s'expliquer de façon satisfaisante par la grille spaciale d'un nuage en dipole.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Ein VorschlagB. Vonneguts, elektrische Tornadotheorien wieder in Betracht zu ziehen, wird aufgegriffen und es wird gezeigt, daß die Gewittertheorie mit der elektromagnetischen Induktion als Grundlage auch auf das Tornadoproblem anwendbar ist. Dadurch finden nicht nur mehrere Eigenschaften des Tornados eine zwanglose Erklärung, vielmehr wird darüber hinaus auch die Wahrscheinlichkeit der Brauchbarkeit der Gewittertheorie bedeutend erhöht. Das beste Argument für die Wirksamkeit der elektromagnetischen Induktion dürfte in der Beobachtung einer rhombusförmigen, mehrere Tornados erzeugenden Gewitterwolke zu sehen sein, die durch das Raumgitter einer Dipolwolke befriedigend erklärt werden kann.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary Equations for the magnetic elements and their isopors are derived for the field of a homogeneously magnetized sphere (a centrical dipole), the curves of the isomagnetic lines are thoroughly discussed, and the singular points indicated. Furthermore, maps of the isomagnetic lines were designed in orthogonal projection by which a very clear representation becomes possible. Thus not only previous results found byChapman are confirmed, but moreover a clear geometrical interpretation is given for the isogons and D-isopors. It is shown for the I-isopors and H-isopors (for the latter ones in general) that the magnetic poles are not only to be considered as non-uniform ray-poles but also as points.
    Abstract: Résumé L'auteur établit des relations mathématiques concernant les éléments magnétiques et leurs isopores pour le champ d'une sphère magnétique homogène (ou d'un dipôle centré), il discute la forme des lignes isomagnétiques et repère des points singuliers. Dessin de cartes des lignes isomagnétiques en projection orthogonale permettant une représentation particulièrement claire. De cette façon, non seulement de précédents résultats deChapman reçoivent confirmation, mais on peut encore donner une signification géométrique des isogones et des isopores D et montrer que pour les isopores I et les isopores H les pôles magnétiques sont non seulement des pôles irrégulièrement rayonnants, mais aussi des pointes.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Es werden Gleichungen für die magnetischen Elemente und ihre Isoporen für das Feld einer homogen magnetisierten Kugel (bzw. eines zentrischen Dipols) abgeleitet, der Kurvenverlauf der isomagnetischen Linien ausführlich diskutiert und die singulären Punkte aufgezeigt. Außerdem sind Karten der isomagnetischen Linien in Orthogonalprojektion, die eine besonders übersichtliche Darstellung ermöglicht, gezeichnet worden. Auf diese Weise werden nicht nur frühere ErgebnisseChapman's bestätigt, sondern darüber hinaus wird für die Isogonen und die D-Isoporen eine anschauliche geometrische Deutung gegeben und für die I-Isoporen und H-Isoporen (für letztere im allgemeinen) gezeigt, daß die magnetischen Pole außer ungleichförmigen Strahlenpolen zusätzlich noch Spitzen sind.

    Notes: Abstract Embryogenic lines of Prunus subhirtella autumno rosa were established on a modified MS medium supplemented with 1 mg/l NAA, 0.06 mg/l IBA and 0.04 mg/l BA from petioles of axenically grown shoots of adult origin. To induce normal development of plantlets we compared a range of approaches on solid culture media as well as in suspension cultures including treatments with ABA, GA3, zeatin, darkness, and cold. A series of experiments were conducted to follow the temporal pattern of somatic embryo development. Separation of embryos at different stages of development was carried out by sieving the suspension cultures through nylon nets. While the embryogenic masses were used for further subcultures, well formed embryos were used for germination experiments. Transformed Prunus subhirtella plants were regenerated from somatic embryos by inoculating an embryogenic callus with Agrobacterium strain LBA 4404 containing the ß-glucuronidase (GUS) gene on plasmid pBinGUSint. Several putative transformed embryogenic calli were selected for continued proliferation on kanamycin containing media. Finally transgenic plants were regenerated on shoot multiplication medium containing kanamycin. Embryos and plants were shown to express the GUS gene by histochemical assays and northern blot analysis. With a yield of 110 transgenic lines from a single transformation experiment this approach appears ideal for the study of the influence on level of expression caused by different copy number, site of insertion etc. This will be helpful in establishing parameters according to which the best transgenic line for a chosen purpose should be selected.

    Description: Molecular ON-switches in which a chemical compound induces protein–protein interactions can allow cellular function to be controlled with small molecules. ON-switches based on clinically applicable compounds and human proteins would greatly facilitate their therapeutic use. Here, we developed an ON-switch system in which the human retinol binding protein 4 (hRBP4) of the lipocalin family interacts with engineered hRBP4 binders in a small molecule-dependent manner. Two different protein scaffolds were engineered to bind to hRBP4 when loaded with the orally available small molecule A1120. The crystal structure of an assembled ON-switch shows that the engineered binder specifically recognizes the conformational changes induced by A1120 in two loop regions of hRBP4. We demonstrate that this conformation-specific ON-switch is highly dependent on the presence of A1120, as demonstrated by an ∼500-fold increase in affinity upon addition of the small molecule drug. Furthermore, the ON-switch successfully regulated the activity of primary human CAR T cells in vitro. We anticipate that lipocalin-based ON-switches have the potential to be broadly applied for the safe pharmacological control of cellular therapeutics.

    Description: In this work, we propose and evaluate a concept for a selective thermal emitter based on Tamm plasmons suitable for monolithic on-chip integration and fabrication by conventional complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS)-compatible processes. The original design of Tamm plasmon structures features a purely one-dimensional array of layers including a Bragg mirror and a metal. The resonant field enhancement next to the metal interface corresponding to optical Tamm states leads to resonant emission at the target wavelength, which depends on the lateral dimensions of the bandgap structure. We demonstrate the application of this concept to a silicon slab structure instead of deploying extended one dimensional layers thus enabling coupling into slab waveguides. Here we focus on the mid-infrared region for absorption sensing applications, particularly on the CO2 absorption line at 4.26 µm as an example. The proposed genetic-algorithm optimization process utilizing the finite-element method and the transfer-matrix method reveals resonant absorption in case of incident modes guided by the slab and, by Kirchhoff’s law, corresponds to emittance up to 90% depending on different choices of the silicon slab height when the structure is used as a thermal emitter. Although we focus on the application as an emitter in the present work, the structure can also be operated as an absorber providing adjusted lateral dimensions and/or exchanged materials (e.g., a different choice for metal).
