    Description: This paper discusses the development and evaluation of an estimation model of manufacturing costs of piping elements through the application of a Reduced Multivariate Polynomial (RMP). The model allows obtaining accurate estimations, even when enough and adequate information is not available. This situation typically occurs in the early stages of the design process of industrial products. The experimental evaluations show that the approach is capable, with a low complexity, of reducing uncertainties and to predict costs with significant precision. Comparisons with a neural network showed also that the RMP performs better considering a set of classical performance measures with the corresponding lower complexity and higher accuracy.

    Description: The concept of life cycle sustainability assessment provides an interdisciplinary space to discuss the main challenges in addressing sustainability from a long-term perspective. However, uncertainty related to cost parameters constitutes one of the main challenges in LCC. This uncertainty prevents managers from precisely anticipating the exact values of important variables. These variables include the costs of spare parts inventories, which in some cases can constitute high percentages of the total cost of a product or service. We propose an activity-based costing model that handles uncertainty using triangular numbers, along with a matrix representation, and Weibull functions to incorporate the projected equipment reliability into the model. A case study based on a spare parts distribution center, which serves the mining industry in Northern Chile, is presented. The results obtained are compared with a traditional costing method. The advantage of using the proposed approach over the traditional one is evident. Future research is directed towards the implementation of a larger number of inventory policies, along with experimentation with other types of fuzzy numbers.

One of the most critical problems in modelling those costs is the limited information and the subjectivity used to represent some of the cost’s elements (e.g., values, drivers, among others). Thus, a fuzzy ABC approach is incorporated into the methodology to overcome those limitations. The application of this methodology aims at providing an alternative procedure to allocating the costs related to wastewater management activities to products. To validate the proposed methodology and illustrate its utility, a case study using data from a bus assembly plant is provided. Part of the wastewater produced is coming from a surface treatment installation which, after a recovery process, reuse part of the same water in a closed loop circuit. Using the proposed Fuzzy ABC methodology, the costs (including uncertainty) of the surface treatment and water treatment activities can be appropriately allocated to the products that generate those activities and that waste.

    Description: Sustainability, Vol. 10, Pages 362: Sustainable Overall Throughputability Effectiveness (S.O.T.E.) as a Metric for Production Systems Sustainability doi: 10.3390/su10020362 Authors: Orlando Durán Andrea Capaldo Paulo Duran Acevedo This paper proposes a new index for a comprehensive and systematic measurement of sustainability and throughput performance in production systems. The proposed index, called Sustainable Overall Throughput Effectiveness (S.O.T.E.), is designed on the basis of a comparison of the environmental and operational factors. Specifically, it integrates the following four dimensions: availability, utilization, performance, and environmental sustainability. The way each dimension is measured is explained and justified. This index uses the overall environmental equipment effectiveness (OEEE) index, which is based on the Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) index. However, such metrics are lacking at the factory level, because OEEE, as well as the OEE, is devoted to equipment-level. Its application and potential contribution to the analysis of sustainable throughput is demonstrated through a case study in an actual crushing plant. Through examining several hypotheses concerning the relationship between operational and environmental performance, a series of useful conclusions could be raised. The main difference and advantage of the proposed S.O.T.E. is that S.O.T.E., as it is based on the Overall Throughput Effectiveness (OTE), measures factory-level sustainability and operational performance. S.O.T.E. allows us to relate the impact of the overall effectiveness of each one of the components of the index to each piece of equipment that makes a part of the production systems. Furthermore, S.O.T.E., as OTE, take into account the production system configuration (series, parallel, assembly, etc.).

Due to this, maintenance of these physical assets is gaining momentum in industry. Maintenance is considered as an activity that contributes to improving the availability, efficiency and productivity of each piece of equipment. Several techniques have been used to achieve greater efficiencies in maintenance, among which we can find the lean maintenance philosophy. Despite the wide diffusion of lean maintenance, there is no structured method that supports the prescription of lean tools applied to the maintenance function. This paper presents the experience gathered in two lean maintenance projects in thermoelectric power plants. The application of lean techniques was based on using a previously developed multicriterial decision making process that uses the Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) methodology to carry out a diagnosis and prescription tasks. That methodology allowed the prescription of the appropriated lean techniques to resolve the main deficiencies in maintenance function. The results of applying such lean tools show that important results can be obtained, making the maintenance function in thermoelectric power plants more efficient and lean.

    Description: Business model innovation is considered key for organizations to achieve sustainability. However, there are many problems involving the operationalization of business model innovation. We used a design science methodology to develop an artifact to assist business model innovation efforts. The artifact uses performance measurement indicators of the company’s business model, which are powered by Big Data analytics to endow customer-driven business model innovation. Then, we applied the artifact in a critical case study. The selected company is a fashion ecommerce that proposes a vegan and sustainable value using recycled plastic bottle yarn as raw material, and ensures that no material with animal origin is used. Our findings show that the artifact successfully assists a proactive and continuous effort towards business model innovation. Although based on technical concepts, the artifact is accessible to the context of small businesses, which helps to democratize the practices of business model innovation and Big Data analytics beyond large organizations. We contribute to the business model innovation literature by connecting it to performance management and Big Data and providing paths for its operationalization. Consequently, in practice, the proposed artifact can assist managers dealing with business model as a dynamic element towards a sustainable company.

    Description: A physical asset’s health is the consequence of a series of factors, ranging from the characteristics of the location where it operates to the care it is submitted to. These characteristics can influence the durability or the horizon of the useful life of any equipment, as well as determine its operational performance and its failure rates in the future. Therefore, the assessment of the influence of asset health on Life Cycle Costs is a compelling need. This paper proposes the incorporation of a factor that reflects the projected behavior of an asset’s health index into its corresponding Life Cycle Costing (LCC) model. This allows cost estimates to be made more realistic and LCC models to be operated more accurately. As a way of validating this proposal, a case study is shown. The methodology proposed in this case study was applied in a real case, considering an LNG facility located in central Chile. In addition, sensitivity studies and comparisons with the results obtained by a traditional Life Cycle Costing model are included. The results show the usefulness of incorporating asset health aspects into the Life Cycle Costing of physical assets.
