    Notes: Abstract. A strain of Serratia marcescens showing the ability to degrade caffeine and other methylxanthines was isolated from soil under coffee cultivation. Growth was observed only with xanthines methylated at the 7 position (caffeine, 1,3,7-trimethylxanthine; paraxanthine, 1,7-dimethylxanthine; theobromine, 3,7-dimethylxanthine and 7-methylxanthine). Paraxanthine and theobromine were released in liquid medium when caffeine was used as the sole source of carbon and nitrogen. When paraxanthine or theobromine were used, 3-methylxanthine, 7-methylxanthine, and xanthine were detected in the liquid medium. Serratia marcescens did not grow with theophylline (1,3-dimethylxanthine), 1-methylxanthine, and 3-methylxanthine, and poor growth was observed with xanthine. Methyluric acid formation from methylxanthines was tested in cell-free extracts by measuring dehydrogenase reduction of tetrazolium salt in native-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis gel. Activity was observed for all methylxanthines, even those with which no bacterial growth was observed. Our results suggest that in this strain of S. marcescens caffeine is degraded to theobromine (3,7-dimethylxanthine) and/or paraxanthine (1,7-dimethylxanthine), and subsequently to 7-methylxanthine and xanthine. Methyluric acid formation could not be confirmed.

    Notes: Changes in protein synthesis in cambial region cells were monitored in 1-year-old cuttings of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) collected in November, when the cambium was dormant, and subjected to environmental conditions that promoted or inhibited cambial growth. The proteins were labelled in vivo with L-[35S]-methionine and separated using 2-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. In budded cuttings cultured under environmental conditions favoring cambial reactivation, there was a reproducible quantitative change in 55 proteins (33 induced and 22 repressed), a less certain increase or decrease in 40 proteins, and no apparent change in about 150 proteins. Under the same conditions, 8 proteins were induced and 6 others were repressed in debudded cuttings treated apically with 1 mg indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) in 1 g lanolin, in which cambial reactivation occurred, compared with debudded cuttings treated with plain lanolin in which the cambium did not reactivate. Three of the proteins induced in the IAA-reated cuttings only appeared after cambial cell division and derivative differentiation actually began, and the same proteins were found in budded cuttings after their cambium had become reactivated. In contrast, protein expression in cuttings exposed to environmental conditions that prevented cambial reactivation was similar at the beginning and end of the experimental period. These results indicate that the cambium was in the quiescence stage of dormancy at the start of the experiment, that quiescent cambial region cells can synthesize proteins as soon as exposed to environmental conditions favoring reactivation, and that only 3 of the approximately 250 proteins detected were specifically involved in cambial growth

    Notes: A theoretical solution is presented to the problem where a VLF anomaly is generated by a conducting half-plane or a perfectly conducting wedge below a stratified overburden. The solution is obtained by the use of a scattering matrix for plane-wave eigenfunctions. VLF anomalies have been computed for different values of the conductance and dip of the half-plane. The phase of the VLF anomaly due to a conducting half-plane depends on the conductance and the distance to the half-plane. Close to the half-plane the tilt angle and ellipticity are of opposite sign for a perfect conductor, but the ellipticity will change sign for a poor conductor. The VLF anomaly for a perfectly conducting wedge is essentially determined by the position of the upper surface of the wedge, i.e. the anomaly will closely resemble the anomaly of a perfectly conducting half-plane in the same position as the upper surface of the wedge.

    Notes: A theoretical solution to the electromagnetic problem of a perfectly conducting half plane below a conducting overburden has been obtained. The VLF anomalies have been computed for different overburden conductivity and thickness and also for different dip angles of the half plane. In the computations the contribution to the secondary magnetic field from the electric Hertz potential has been neglected. The anomaly curves which are displayed as EM 16 readings, show a fairly complicated behaviour. This is mainly due to the phase shift and attenuation of the field caused by the conductivity of the overburden and the host rock. From the anomaly curves it is possible to define the apparent depth to the top of the conductor as the distance between the peak value and the cross-over of the real component. The apparent depth is usually larger than the actual depth, but it is possible to determine the actual depth to the conductor from the relation between the peak-to-peak anomaly and the apparent depth. When the peak-to-peak anomaly is fairly large, it is also possible to make estimates of the dip angle. However, a complete set of master curves will be a necessary tool for interpretation of VLF data when there is need to obtain more accurate estimates of the half plane parameters. In a specific case the theoretical calculations are shown to be in good agreement with measured data.
