Description / Table of Contents:
Notes:
Summary 1. Colchicine inhibits the cytokinesis of Cyclotella cryptica but not the deposition of valvae. As a consequence “lateral valvae” are formed (Badour, 1968). The formation of these lateral valvae (and, therefore, also of normal valvae) neither depends directly on mitosis nor on plasmatic growth. 2. Measurements of the DNA content of nuclei of cells with and without lateral valvae and inhibition of nucleic acid synthesis by actinomycin D and of DNA synthesis by FUDR show that the formation of lateral valvae depends on DNA replication. It is induced by factors which arise in the S- or, more probably, in the G2-phase. 3. The inhibition of DNA synthesis by actinomycin D decreases in the presence of colchicine.
